Chapter 1
Vinny Bellucci’s Behind Closed DoorsChapter One: The LegendTarot Spread: The Magician • The Moon • Justice • Five of Cups • The World
“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” — Matthew 6:21
Italian Quote: “Le apparenze ingannano.” — Appearances deceive.
Featured Dessert: Vanilla Crème BrûléeReason: Its hardened caramel shell hides a soft vanilla center—the perfect reflection of Vinny Bellucci.
The wrought-iron balconies of the French Quarter glowed beneath the gas lamps as another humid New Orleans evening settled over the city. Jazz drifted through the streets while tourists laughed, cameras flashed, and rumors spread as easily as the scent of chicory coffee.
Everyone had a story about Vinny Bellucci.
“He always has another beautiful woman on his arm.”
“I heard he’s got children all over the city.”
“He’s the Doberge Don.”
“He’s the biggest dessert businessman in Louisiana.”
“No…he owns half the Garden District.”
Every version grew a little larger before it reached the next table.
Across town, members of the Five Families gathered in the ballroom of the Bellucci mansion for dessert and champagne. The Bellucci, Romano, Caronna, Alto, and Lipari families had come together for what appeared to be an ordinary evening, yet every conversation eventually found its way back to one man.
Armani Lipari laughed as he lifted his champagne flute.
“So tell me…which Vinny showed up today?”
“The businessman?” someone asked.
“The playboy,” another answered.
“The class clown,” came a third voice.
“The Don,” said another.
Each family offered a different version until it sounded as though they were describing five different men.
Standing quietly near one of the long dessert tables, Valeri Caronna watched without interrupting.
Before her rested rows of vanilla crème brûlée, each one perfectly caramelized, each one identical on the surface.
She smiled to herself.
Nobody at the table noticed.
Nobody understood.
They were doing exactly what they had always done.
Judging the caramel.
Never tasting the vanilla underneath.
Vivika Bellucci entered carrying another tray of desserts. She greeted every family with a smile before setting the tray beside Val.
“They’re talking about Daddy again?”
Val nodded.
“They always are.”
Vivika looked across the room toward Vinny.
He stood in the middle of the ballroom making everyone laugh. He shook hands, hugged old friends, told stories, and accepted compliments as though the attention meant nothing.
To everyone else, he looked completely at ease.
Vivika knew better.
She had seen him wake from nightmares.
She had watched him quietly straighten old family photographs before anyone else came downstairs.
She had seen him stand for long moments outside Roxy’s portrait without saying a word.
That man never appeared in public.
Across the room, Vinny caught Val’s eye.
For a single heartbeat, the smile disappeared.
The performer vanished.
The room faded away.
Only she noticed.
Then, almost instantly, the grin returned.
The legend stepped back into place.
Val thought to herself:
They all know Vinny Bellucci.
None of them know Vincent.
As dessert plates were passed around the ballroom, Uncle Vincenzo slowly approached Val.
Without speaking, he placed a worn leather ledger beside her hand.
It was older than anyone in the room.
Its corners were cracked.
Its pages yellowed with age.
Across the front, embossed in faded gold lettering, were four simple words:
BEHIND CLOSED DOORS
Val looked up.
“What is this?”
Uncle Vincenzo smiled sadly.
“The story everyone thinks they already know.”
Chapter One CliffhangerVal carefully opened the brittle cover.
Inside, written in elegant handwriting, was a single sentence.
If you are reading this, then the city has fallen in love with the legend…and forgotten the man.
Closing PrayerLord, grant us the wisdom to see beyond appearances, the courage to seek the truth, and the compassion to know people by the character of their hearts rather than the stories told about them. Amen.
