Chapter 1

Somewhere in a village.

Someone's Pov.

"No, I can't do this, I need to fight for myself, need to get out of this hellhole. I can't lose hope, no, not right now."

A seventeen-year-old girl whispered to herself.

FLASHBACK.

Author's Pov

September 25, 2007

Far away from the city, the breathtaking sight, the busy roads, in a village, a girl was born.

God has blessed Mario's family. They had a son five years ago who didn't survive long and died just after one year of his birth. And now God granted them a baby girl. Will she survive longer than her brother? The question remained unanswered.

Mario's family must be happy. But were they?

Some blessings are celebrated, and some are cursed from the very beginning.

Mario looked at the baby girl in his hands, clenching his jaw, tightening his fists.

"Why do you look so unhappy, dear?" Mario's mother-in-law asked as she was standing beside him with happy tears in her eyes.

"Because this is not what I prayed for." He said without any emotion.

His mother-in-law looked at him, shock evident on her face, "What are you saying, son? She is your daughter, god's blessing to your family."

"A blessing?" He chuckled bitterly, "She is anything but a blessing, mother."

"Son, what has gotten into you? You should be happy, after so many years, God has finally granted you a blessing and look at you..." His mother-in-law said disappointedly.

"What happened?" Their talk made Sana shift in her sleep, and she asked when she opened her eyes.

She delivered her baby in a normal way, so the doctors shifted her to the normal ward, because her condition was okay and her family could take her home after a few hours.

"Dear, you should take some rest, we are just going outside." Her mother said worriedly.

"I am fine, Mom, and I have taken enough rest. You tell me what you guys were talking about?"

"Nothing much, dear--"

Just then Mario spoke,

"I am telling you, Sana, I am not going to take her home", he said sternly while putting the baby on the bed.

"Oh my god, what are you saying? She is our daughter, why won't we?" Her eyes are now wide open.

"Do whatever the hell you want! I am not taking this disgrace at home, and never bring her face near me." He spoke furiously.

Just then, his mother-in-law spoke, "If you don't want her, then fine, you should leave her, I will take care of her with love, just don't call her a disgrace, please."

"Oh yes, you can, we won't mind, right sana?" He looked at Sana with a -say no and you will see the consequences- look on his face.

Sana very well knew what that meant. She didn't want to make her husband angry because she knew the consequences, but at the same time, she did not want her mother to take her daughter. Sana lowered her head. Her trembling fingers tightened around the bedsheet. Tears burned in her eyes, but not a single word escaped her lips. With the gulp, she stated, "y-yeah.... We... Won't mind, just t-take care of h-her."

Se looked at her daughter near her bed, controlling her tears, her eyes becoming red, but she didn't let out any whimper. Oh, how unfortunate a woman she was, who didn't even have the opportunity to hold her daughter in her arms and kiss her.

"Forgive me, my daughter", she silently begged. "I promise I will come back for you." She was in her thoughts, then she heard her mother,

"Okay then, keep your dignity to yourself. I will take care of my little one." She held the newborn baby in her arms, kissed her forehead lovingly, "What a pity," she thought to herself. What has this poor girl done wrong that she has to go through this?

She left from there, while huffing and cursing both of them in a low voice.

--

The village where they lived was much more backward than others. They don't like girls, call them a disgrace, just like Mario did. Sana knew all of this; she knew her husband's intentions of having a son only. She gave birth, hoping to see the sight of her son, but yeah, something else was written in their fate.

How can a mother leave her child just like that?

Their selfishness.

Their sick desire to live a happy life without making their husband angry.

Oh, what other things can this selfishness do?

~~

Sana's mother gave her daughter the name "Luna," "The moon", while saying,

"They call you a burden today, but one day they will speak your name with pride, my love." And kissed her forehead lovingly.

She thought just as the Moon brightens the darkening sky, in the same way, perhaps, Luna will bring light to this darkness, to this ignorance, where people do not like girls, call them a disgrace, where women are not respected.

..

Sana used to visit Luna when her husband was not at home, as she was scared of her husband, or perhaps she had also become like her husband, because, as they say, with whom you live, eventually their habits and other things become a part of your life too.

Her mother told her that she was also becoming like Mario.

But she simply denied.

It is a fact that everyone denies the truth; it is bitter, so they simply hide it with their lies.

Luna's grandmother loved her with everything, taking care of her from day to night.

Years passed, and in all of this time, Luna never asked about her parents. She once asked about Sana as she was the only person who visited them, but after weeks. So, her nanna replied, "She is just a neighbor, dear. She doesn't have a child, so she likes to see you." She lied to her because she didn't want Luna to feel lonely, to feel left over. After all, she knew what it felt like to be abandoned.

And after that, Luna never asked her any questions relating to her parents, family, because in her eyes, her only family was her grandmother, her nanna.

She taught Luna the basics of life, and being a good girl, Luna listened to every single thing and worked accordingly. She also taught some educational things, because she knew that once she died, she would have to go to her parents, and they would not teach her anything and would lock her up, just like her husband used to do with Sana, her daughter. But she wasn't like Sana. She was brave; she fought with her husband, who left her all alone, and she lived with her parents. She taught Sana the same things she is now teaching Luna. And what Sana did, it showed her illiterate self. And now, she was doing everything to teach Luna so that she would not become like her mother and become a light of guidance to everyone.

And Luna grew up in good hands.

But the question is..

For how long?
