Chapter 1 Where Every Choice Began
"People often say that a person's life can change in a single moment. I disagree. Sometimes, it changes in the quiet moments—the ones no one notices until years later."
The first thing Alice Edalok remembered about home wasn't the peeling cream walls or the old ceiling fan that squeaked every few minutes.
It was laughter.
Not the loud, carefree kind that echoed through grand mansions, but the warm laughter that filled an ordinary house with extraordinary love.
Their home wasn't luxurious.
It wasn't the biggest on the street.
But to eight-year-old Alice, it was enough.
Enough because her mother was there.
Enough because her four siblings turned every meal into a competition and every evening into an adventure.
"Give it back!"
"I only took one!"
"One? That's half my meat!"
Laughter erupted around the dining table.
Mrs. Edalok shook her head as she stirred the pot of stew on the stove.
"You children will never change."
"We learned from the best," Alice's older brother teased.
Their mother gasped dramatically.
"Oh? So now you're saying I'm troublesome?"
The room exploded with laughter again.
Alice laughed until tears gathered in the corners of her eyes.
Those moments were her favorite.
If someone had asked her what happiness looked like, she wouldn't have pointed to expensive toys or beautiful houses.
She would have pointed to this.
To her mother's smile.
To her siblings arguing over food they would eventually share anyway.
To the comforting feeling that everyone she loved was together under one roof.
That, to Alice, was home.
Being the fourth of five children meant she often observed more than she spoke.
Her eldest brother naturally took charge of everything.
Her older sister was gentle but firm, always making sure everyone behaved.
Her immediate older brother could make anyone laugh, even on their worst days.
Her little brother believed tears were the answer to every problem.
Alice loved them all.
Each in a different way.
"You've been smiling to yourself for five minutes," her mother said, interrupting her thoughts.
Alice blinked.
"Have I?"
Mrs. Edalok nodded with a knowing smile.
"What are you thinking about?"
Alice hesitated before answering.
"When I grow up..."
"Yes?"
"I'm going to become very rich."
Her siblings burst into laughter.
"Oh? Rich enough to forget us?" her older brother teased.
Alice shook her head so quickly that her braids bounced.
"Never!"
"Then what will you do with all that money?" her mother asked softly.
Alice looked at her for a long moment.
Then she wrapped her tiny arms around her waist.
"I'll buy you a big house."
Her mother chuckled.
"A big house?"
"The biggest."
"And then?"
"A nice car."
"What else?"
Alice smiled.
"You'll never have to work again."
For a moment, Mrs. Edalok said nothing.
She simply held her daughter close.
Finally, she whispered,
"My little dreamer."
Alice didn't know why those words made her heart feel so full.
She only knew she wanted to hear them forever.
Outside, the evening breeze rustled through the mango tree in their compound.
The sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in shades of orange and gold.
Everything felt peaceful.
Until...
The rusty gate creaked open.
A familiar car engine rumbled into the compound.
Silence.
It happened every single time.
Her eldest brother stopped talking.
Her sister quietly gathered the plates.
Even her little brother abandoned the toy car he'd been pushing across the floor.
Alice looked around, confused.
Nobody had said a word.
Yet somehow...
Everyone understood.
The front door opened.
"Good evening," they greeted almost in unison.
Her father acknowledged them with a brief nod before walking past them without another word.
No smile.
No questions about school.
No playful teasing.
Only silence.
Alice lowered her eyes.
She never understood why the house felt smaller whenever he was home.
Later that night, the house lay in darkness.
Alice couldn't sleep.
Moonlight filtered through the curtains, casting silver patterns across her bedroom wall.
Then she heard it.
Voices.
Soft at first.
Her mother's.
Then her father's.
She couldn't make out the words.
Only the emotion behind them.
The voices grew sharper.
A long silence followed.
Then...
A door closed.
Footsteps echoed through the hallway.
Everything became quiet again.
Alice pulled her blanket closer.
Children weren't supposed to understand the burdens adults carried.
But they noticed more than adults imagined.
She closed her eyes and whispered a silent prayer she didn't fully understand.
"Please let tomorrow be another happy day."
Little did she know...
Tomorrow would come.
So would the laughter.
But one day, she'd discover that not every smile told the truth.
And when that day arrived...
She would be forced to make the first of many choices that would define the woman she would become.

I know Alice's father is going to bring trouble to the family. It's a shame. 😔
