Chapter 1
CHAPTER 1 — THE VANISHING
Rain hammered the streets of Baltimore hard enough to erase footprints.
Cameron Stone stood beneath the glow of a broken streetlamp outside a small apartment building while police lights painted the alley in violent flashes of red and blue. The little girl’s mother sat in the back of an ambulance wrapped in a blanket, shaking so badly she could barely speak.
Eight-year-old Lily Mercer had vanished less than twenty minutes earlier.
No witnesses.
No ransom call.
No sign of forced entry.
Stone hated cases like this.
Because children did not simply disappear.
Someone always took them.
Detective Alvarez approached with a tablet in hand. “Traffic cameras caught a black delivery van leaving the block three minutes after the mother reported the abduction.”
“Plate?”
“Stolen.”
Stone nodded once. Professional. Organized.
That made the room in his chest tighten.
Raines stepped beside him, rain dripping from the shoulders of his coat. “FBI says this could connect to the other disappearances.”
Stone turned sharply. “How many now?”
Raines hesitated.
“Four.”
For a moment, the noise of the city disappeared.
Four children.
Four families.
Four empty bedrooms.
Stone stared up at the apartment window where pink curtains fluttered in the storm wind.
He could already picture the child inside the van. Terrified. Crying quietly. Waiting for someone to come.
And that thought hit harder than bullets ever could.
“What do we know?” Stone asked.
Alvarez swallowed. “Every child taken had one thing in common.”
Stone looked at him.
“They were all children of former intelligence operatives.”
Silence.
Then Stone’s phone vibrated.
Unknown number.
He answered carefully. “Stone.”
A distorted voice whispered through static.
“You’re already too late.”
The call ended.
And across the street, a parked black van suddenly exploded into flames.
