Chapter 1
Chapter 1: The Night Everything Changed
The Blackwood Pack House had never looked more beautiful.
Silver banners hung from the towering stone walls, glowing beneath the light of crystal chandeliers. The scent of roasted meat and fresh flowers drifted through the air while laughter echoed across the grand hall.
Tonight was the Moon Bond Ceremony.
The most important night of the year.
The night when the Moon Goddess was said to reveal the fated bonds between mates.
For most wolves, it was a night filled with excitement.
For me, it was just another reminder that I didn’t belong.
I stood near one of the tall windows overlooking the forest, trying my best to stay unnoticed.
That had always been my specialty.
My name was Aria Nightshade.
At twenty-one years old, I was an ordinary member of the Blackwood Pack.
At least, that’s what everyone believed.
I wasn’t a warrior like the women who trained alongside the pack guards.
I wasn’t gifted with exceptional strength.
I wasn’t born into a powerful bloodline.
I wasn’t an Alpha’s daughter.
I was simply the daughter of the pack healer.
My mother had spent her life caring for injured wolves and helping bring pups into the world.
After her death five years ago, I had continued assisting in the healing house.
Most pack members knew my name.
Very few truly knew me.
And that was fine.
Or at least, that was what I told myself.
“There you are!”
I groaned before turning around.
Only one person could find me in a crowd this quickly.
Lily Harper.
My best friend.
Her bright blonde curls bounced as she hurried toward me through the crowd.
Unlike me, Lily loved attention.
She practically glowed beneath it.
“I’ve been looking everywhere for you.”
“I’ve been standing here the whole time.”
“Exactly.”
She crossed her arms dramatically.
“Aria, this is the Moon Bond Ceremony. You’re supposed to socialize, smile, and maybe meet your mate.”
I laughed softly.
“You make it sound easy.”
“It is easy.”
She grabbed my shoulders.
“Step one: stop hiding.”
“I am not hiding.”
Her expression told me she didn’t believe a word.
“Then why are you standing alone by a window?”
I opened my mouth.
Closed it.
Lily smirked.
“That’s what I thought.”
Before I could come up with a response, a sudden wave of excitement rippled through the hall.
People began whispering.
Heads turned toward the entrance.
The large doors opened.
And immediately, everyone knew who had arrived.
Alpha Kael Blackwood.
The atmosphere shifted the moment he entered.
It always did.
Tall.
Powerful.
Confident.
Everything about him commanded attention.
His dark hair was slightly messy, as if he had run a hand through it moments earlier.
His black suit fit his broad frame perfectly.
But it was his eyes that people remembered.
Cold silver eyes.
The eyes of an Alpha.
The eyes of a man born to lead.
Women stared openly.
Men straightened respectfully.
Even visiting wolves from neighboring packs stepped aside.
Kael wasn’t merely respected.
He was feared.
At twenty-five years old, he had transformed the Blackwood Pack into one of the strongest packs in the region.
His victories against rogue wolves were legendary.
His leadership was unquestioned.
His future seemed unstoppable.
Beside him walked Beta Damon Cross.
If Kael was intimidating, Damon was approachable.
The Beta carried an easy smile that made conversations effortless.
Many wolves preferred speaking to Damon first before approaching the Alpha.
He noticed me watching and offered a polite nod.
I smiled back.
Lily immediately elbowed me.
“Damon just smiled at you.”
“He’s being polite.”
“Or maybe he likes you.”
I rolled my eyes.
“Not everyone is secretly in love with me, Lily.”
“You never know.”
Her grin widened.
“Maybe your mate is in this room.”
I looked around the crowded hall.
Hundreds of wolves filled the space.
Some laughing.
Some dancing.
Some nervously waiting for fate to intervene.
“I doubt it.”
Lily frowned.
“You should have more faith.”
Faith.
That was easier said than done.
For years, I had watched others find happiness while remaining stuck in the same place.
Watching.
Waiting.
Wondering.
The sound of a ceremonial horn interrupted my thoughts.
The crowd quickly settled.
Pack Elder Rowan stepped onto the elevated platform at the center of the hall.
His white beard nearly reached his chest.
Despite his age, his voice carried easily throughout the room.
“Welcome, children of the Moon.”
The room fell silent.
“Tonight we gather beneath the blessing of the Moon Goddess.”
Every wolf bowed their head respectfully.
“May those destined to find their mates receive her guidance.”
A chorus of cheers erupted.
Excitement filled the hall.
The ceremony had begun.
One by one, wolves stepped forward as traditions older than memory unfolded.
The night passed in a blur of celebrations.
Several pairs discovered their mate bonds.
Tears flowed.
Laughter echoed.
Families embraced.
Each new match was greeted with applause.
I genuinely felt happy for them.
But a small part of me couldn’t help wondering.
Would that ever happen for me?
Hours passed.
Nothing happened.
The excitement gradually faded.
The ceremony was nearing its end.
I should have felt disappointed.
Instead, I felt strangely relieved.
Maybe it was easier this way.
No expectations.
No heartbreak.
Just another ordinary year.
I excused myself from Lily and stepped outside onto one of the stone balconies overlooking the forest.
Cool night air brushed against my skin.
The moon hung high above the trees.
Beautiful.
Ancient.
Watching.
For a moment, everything felt peaceful.
Then my wolf stirred.
A strange sensation swept through me.
I frowned.
Something felt different.
The feeling intensified.
My pulse quickened.
My heart began racing for reasons I couldn’t explain.
The scent reached me first.
Pine.
Rain.
Wild earth.
Power.
Every instinct inside me came alive.
My wolf practically surged forward.
Mate.
The word exploded inside my mind.
I froze.
No.
No, no, no.
Slowly, I turned.
Standing inside the open balcony doorway was Alpha Kael Blackwood.
His silver eyes were locked onto mine.
The world stopped.
Everything disappeared.
The forest.
The music.
The voices.
The stars.
Only Kael remained.
My breathing became uneven.
His expression mirrored my shock.
For one impossible moment, hope bloomed inside my chest.
The Moon Goddess had chosen him.
Out of everyone.
She had chosen him.
Alpha Kael Blackwood was my mate.
A thousand possibilities flashed through my mind.
Then something changed.
The warmth vanished from his eyes.
His face hardened.
The shock became anger.
The anger became something worse.
Disgust.
My stomach dropped.
Fear replaced hope.
Kael stepped forward.
Then another step.
And another.
Each movement felt deliberate.
Dangerous.
The bond between us pulsed painfully.
Around us, wolves were beginning to notice.
Whispers spread.
Heads turned.
Curious eyes followed the invisible connection pulling us together.
The crowd slowly parted.
Creating a path.
Creating a stage.
Creating an audience.
My heart hammered inside my chest.
Something was terribly wrong.
Kael stopped only a few feet away.
The entire hall had fallen silent.
Even the musicians had stopped playing.
Hundreds of eyes watched us.
Waiting.
Expecting.
My wolf whimpered nervously.
Kael stared at me.
Not with affection.
Not with joy.
Not with relief.
With disappointment.
As though fate itself had betrayed him.
The pain of that realization cut deeper than any blade.
His jaw tightened.
His hands curled into fists.
For a brief moment, I thought he might say nothing.
I thought he might walk away.
Instead, he spoke.
“Aria Nightshade.”
My name echoed throughout the hall.
Every eye shifted toward me.
My cheeks burned.
I could barely breathe.
Kael’s voice grew colder.
Sharper.
Merciless.
“You are not the mate I wanted.”
A gasp rippled through the crowd.
My heart shattered.
But he wasn’t finished.
His gaze remained fixed on mine.
Unyielding.
“I reject you.”
The words struck like lightning.
Pain exploded through the bond.
A cry escaped my lips.
The room spun.
Whispers erupted everywhere.
Shock.
Confusion.
Pity.
Humiliation.
I could feel all of it.
But none of it hurt as much as the look in Kael’s eyes.
Because there was no regret there.
No hesitation.
Only certainty.
Only rejection.
And as I struggled to remain standing beneath the weight of a broken bond, I realized one terrifying truth.
The worst part of this nightmare had only just begun.
