Chapter 1

The subway platform was crowded—just the way she liked it. Bella shifted her weight, letting a businessman brush past too close, his briefcase knocking against her hip. She didn’t flinch.

Her husband had texted an hour ago: ‘Dinner at 7?’

She replied with a smile emoji and deleted it immediately.

Instead of boarding the uptown train to their apartment in Brooklyn, she turned toward downtown—the opposite direction of home. Her pulse jumped when two college guys eyed her from across the platform; one smirked as he nudged his friend.

This wasn't cheating if they initiated first.

That’s what she told herself every time.

They were being inappropriate—not her.

The train doors slid open with a hiss. The two guys boarded first—laughing, loud, deliberately taking the seats right across from hers. One stretched his legs out into the aisle, forcing her to step over them.

Bella bit her lip.

No eye contact. No words exchanged.

But she sat down slowly—crossing one leg over the other in that tight skirt she’d worn specifically today—and let her purse rest on her lap like an unspoken invitation.

The guy who smirked earlier leaned forward to tie his shoe… and lingered there too long near Bella’s knee. His breath smelled like energy drinks and nicotine as he straightened up again without apology.

Her stomach flipped.

Not with anger.

With something far worse: anticipation.

The train lurched forward, swaying gently as it picked up speed. The guys started talking again—something about a party tonight—but their voices blurred into background noise for Bella.

She focused on the warmth spreading through her chest, that familiar prickle under her skin.

One of them finally turned his gaze fully to her. Not aggressive. Not hostile.

Just… assessing.

Like she was an option.

His friend noticed and nudged him with a grin—look at this one—and suddenly both were staring openly now, no pretense left.

Bella kept her face neutral.

But inside?

Her heartbeat thundered in time with the wheels against tracks:

Thump-thump.

Thump-thump.

Guiltless excitement coursing through every nerve.

The train rattled past a series of dark tunnels, plunging the car into brief intervals of near-darkness—each flash of overhead light illuminating their faces for split seconds.

During one such blackout, she felt it: a warm hand brushed against her thigh. Quick. Casual. Like it could’ve been an accident.

But then it happened again.

Firm this time.

Squeezing lightly before retreating back to the guy’s own lap like nothing had happened.

Bella didn’t move.

Didn’t react outwardly at all—but inside?

A rush flooded her veins, sharp and electric—oh god.

Her husband kissed her forehead every morning when she made coffee.

He brought home chocolates after stressful days at work without being asked.

And right now… someone else was touching what belonged to him—and she wasn't stopping it.

The guy did it a third time—slower this time, more deliberate. His palm slid up just an inch higher on her thigh before pulling away again.

His friend laughed quietly, elbowing him like ‘you’re wild’.

Bella kept staring out the window at the blurring cityscape—playing dumb. Playing uninterested.

But her fingers curled subtly around the strap of her purse.

Her breathing had gone shallow.

No one spoke.

No one accused anyone of anything.

This was all silent communication—the kind that happened in crowded trains every day: touches that shouldn’t be there but somehow were allowed if no protest came fast enough…

And she wasn’t protesting.

She wasn’t even blinking wrong.

The train slowed as it approached the next stop—a busy station with crowds flooding onto the platform.

Bella’s stomach dropped.

This was her chance to leave. To walk away, take a different train home, end this before anything escalated further.

But she didn’t move.

She stayed seated when everyone else stood up to exit—her body frozen even as people squeezed past her in the aisle. The two guys hesitated too; they weren't getting off either.

Instead of leaving together like normal strangers would after an innocent ride… they lingered near each other on purpose now—their shoulders brushing against hers as they shifted positions slightly inside their seats…

Waiting for something.

Or someone.

The doors hissed shut again, and the train began to move—emptier now, fewer bodies packed together. The dynamic shifted instantly.

It was just them three in this section of the car now.

No witnesses.

No distractions.

One guy—braver or drunker than his friend—leaned sideways casually and let his arm drape across Bella’s shoulders like it was nothing unusual. A casual touch that shouldn’t mean anything… but did because they were strangers on a train with no history between them whatsoever

His weight settled slightly against her side.

Warmth seeped through her sweater from where their arms pressed together

And then…

He tilted his head down toward hers slowly…

His breath hit her cheek—warm, slightly minty from gum he’d probably chewed to hide the alcohol on it.

He didn’t kiss her.

Not yet.

But his face hovered there, close enough that she could see the faint stubble along his jawline, smell the cheap cologne mixed with beer. His eyes flicked down to her lips for half a second before meeting hers again—testing.

Permission?

Bella held perfectly still.

No flinch.

No pull-away reflex like any self-respecting married woman should have…

And then…the guy closed the gap and pressed his mouth against hers.

The kiss was clumsy—wet and a little sloppy from alcohol—but it wasn’t aggressive. Not forceful. Just… there.

A stranger’s lips on hers.

No warning.

No foreplay beyond that stupid thigh touch earlier.

Her husband had kissed her like this last weekend after watching a movie together—soft, familiar presses against her mouth before pulling away to smile at her…

Now another man did the same thing completely out of context, with no emotion behind it except curiosity or boredom or whatever impulse made him do it.

And Bella?

She kissed back instinctively for one terrifying second—muscle memory responding before guilt could kick in.
