Prologue A Promise in the Fire

The Silver Palace burned beneath a blood-red moon, its gleaming towers disappearing beneath smoke and ash.

Rain lashed against the palace walls, but even the storm could not smother the flames climbing the marble towers. Smoke poured through shattered windows. Bells rang across the capital in desperate warning.

Somewhere below...

The gates had fallen.

Not broken.

Opened.

Captain Kael knew the difference.

Five centuries of service had taught the last known Lycan exactly what betrayal looked like.

He ran through the smoke-filled corridor with impossible speed. His armor was blackened with soot. Blood trickled from a cut above his brow, unnoticed. Every breath tasted of ash.

Only one thought remained.

The royal family.

He reached the throne room doors and found them splintered inward.

"My King!"

Kael shoved the doors open.

The throne room had become a battlefield.

Broken glass glittered across the floor like fallen stars. Rain swept through shattered windows, washing crimson across the silver stone.

King Orion stood before the throne, one hand pressed against the wound beneath his ribs. His white tunic was soaked with blood, yet he still held his sword.

Beside him stood Queen Selene, baby Aria sleeping peacefully against her shoulder, blissfully unaware that her kingdom was dying.

Eight-year-old Prince Cassian stood at his mother's side, gripping a small wooden practice sword with both trembling hands.

Near the rear of the chamber, Dominic, High Priest of the Moon Temple, leaned upon the silver staff of his office while whispering a prayer over a wounded Royal Guard.

For one impossible heartbeat...

Kael believed they could all still escape.

Then Orion looked at him.

Not as his king.

As a father running out of time.

"Captain."

Kael dropped to one knee.

"My King."

"Stand."

Kael obeyed immediately.

Orion's voice was steady.

Too steady.

"Take Cassian through the Royal Guard passage."

Kael nodded once.

"Get him to the eastern rendezvous."

"And you?"

Orion ignored the question.

"Wait until sunrise."

Selene lowered her eyes.

"If Selene and Aria are not there by then..."

His voice faltered for only the briefest moment.

"...find them."

Kael stared at him.

Only then did he understand.

They were dividing the family.

"No."

Orion's eyes hardened.

"That was not a request."

"My place is beside you."

The king stepped forward and gripped Kael's forearm.

"You have protected my family longer than I have been alive."

Kael's throat tightened.

"My King..."

"Tonight..."

Orion's voice softened.

"...your king is my family."

Silence filled the ruined throne room.

"Promise me."

Kael placed his fist over his heart in the ancient salute of the Royal Guard.

"I swear it."

"I will find them."

"I will protect them."

"With my life."

Orion closed his eyes in relief.

"I know."

Then he turned toward his son.

Cassian stood perfectly still despite the tears running down his cheeks.

The little wooden sword shook in his hands.

Orion knelt before him, ignoring the blood soaking through his clothes.

"You remember what I taught you?"

Cassian swallowed hard.

"A king protects."

Orion smiled.

"A king loves first."

The boy nodded.

"I'll remember."

"I know you will."

Orion kissed his forehead.

Kael stepped beside him.

"My prince."

Cassian looked up at him with frightened eyes.

"You'll bring them back?"

Kael knelt so they were eye to eye.

"I swear it."

Only then did Cassian place his hand in Kael's.

He looked back toward his parents.

"Mother?"

Selene's composure finally cracked.

Only for a heartbeat.

Then she smiled.

The kind of smile only a mother could give.

"I'll see you at sunrise."

Cassian nodded.

Because he believed her.

Because he needed to.

Selene turned toward the woman standing nearest her.

"Raven."

Raven stepped forward immediately.

Selene's cousin.

Her closest friend.

Aria's wet nurse.

The woman who had sung the princess to sleep more nights than she could count.

"My Queen."

Selene carefully placed baby Aria into Raven's waiting arms.

Raven froze.

"No."

"Take her through the nursery tunnels."

"My Queen—"

"Meet us at the eastern rendezvous."

"I won't leave you."

Selene grasped Raven's shoulders.

"You are not leaving me."

Her tears finally fell.

She removed the silver moon pendant from around her own neck and tucked it inside Aria's blanket.

"You are saving my daughter."

Raven looked down at the sleeping infant.

Aria's tiny fingers wrapped around the edge of the blanket.

She never woke.

Selene kissed her daughter's forehead.

"When she is old enough..."

"...tell her who she is."

Her voice broke.

"Tell her I never stopped loving her."

Raven nodded through her tears.

"With my life."

She turned...

And disappeared into the smoke with the infant princess in her arms.

It was the last time mother and daughter would see one another.

A tremendous crash shook the palace.

Dust rained from the ceiling.

Dominic looked toward the great doors.

"They've broken through the lower hall."

Orion tightened his grip on his sword.

"Go."

Every instinct inside Kael screamed at him to stay.

To fight.

To die beside his king.

Instead...

He honored his promise.

Taking Cassian's hand, he led the young prince toward the hidden passage concealed behind the eastern wall.

Cassian resisted only long enough to cry out—

"Father!"

Orion looked at his son.

Not like a king sending away his heir.

Like a father trying to memorize his child's face.

"Live, Cassian."

The stone passage slid shut.

Darkness swallowed Kael and the prince.

Behind them...

A kingdom fell.

Ahead of them...

A promise would shape the next twenty-three years.

And somewhere within the burning Silver Palace...

Hope refused to die.
