Chapter 1CHAPTER ONE - THE WARNING Book 3

The desert highway stretched out in front of him like a scar - long, cracked, and forgotten by everyone except the men desperate enough to drive it. Midnight heat still clung to the pavement, rising in slow waves that twisted the air into shapes that didn't belong there.

Darnell Briggs kept his hands tight on the wheel, knuckles pale against the dark cab. The Whisper Route wasn't a place you drove for money. It was a place you drove when you didn't have a choice.

He hadn't slept in twenty hours.

Didn't matter.

Detroit taught him how to work tired.

Carnival life taught him how to work broken.

The road taught him how to keep going when every part of him said stop.

But tonight... something felt off.

The radio crackled, then died.

The dashboard lights flickered like the truck was shivering.

The engine growled low, almost like it was warning him.

Darnell leaned forward, squinting through the windshield.

That's when he saw it.

A shape in the road.

Low.

Still.

Waiting.

He eased off the gas. The rig groaned as it slowed, headlights stretching across the cracked asphalt until the shape lifted its head.

Two red eyes opened.

Not glowing.

Not reflecting.

Burning.

The dog stepped forward, slow and deliberate, its paws silent on the pavement. Its fur was blacker than the night around it - so dark it swallowed the light instead of bouncing it back. Veins pulsed along its neck and shoulders like something alive beneath the skin.

Darnell's breath caught.

He'd heard the stories.

Every trucker had.

"If you see the black dog, you're pushing too hard."

"If you see the black dog, pull over."

"If you see the black dog... it's already too late."

But this wasn't exhaustion.

This wasn't a hallucination.

The dog was real.

Standing dead center in the road.

Staring straight at him.

Darnell killed the engine.

Silence swallowed the desert whole.

The dog didn't move.

It just watched him - like it was waiting for him to understand something he didn't want to face.

Then, slowly, the dog turned its head toward the shoulder of the road.

That's when Darnell saw them.

Footprints.

Not paw prints.

Footprints.

Bare.

Human.

Fresh.

Leading into a thin layer of fog that shouldn't have been there.

Darnell opened the door.

Boots hit the ground.

The air felt colder than it should've.

The dog's eyes tracked him, muscles tight, veins pulsing like it was holding back something violent.

He took one step toward it.

The dog growled - low, warning, almost human.

Then it backed away into the fog...

following the footprints.

Darnell swallowed hard.

Whatever was waiting out there wasn't just a legend.

It wasn't just a warning.

It was calling him.

And he knew - deep in his bones - that if he didn't follow, he'd regret it for the rest of his life.
