Summary

“Dad, how did you know you were in love?” “With your mum, you mean?” “Just in general.” “When you stop fighting for air,” his father replied softly, “because you realize you've finally found the reason to breathe.” “Didn’t it scare you?” “Son, love is terrifying. But so is the ocean, and that never stopped me from teaching you how to swim.” “No. It didn't.” “Anything else on your mind?” “Maybe.” “Alright. Whenever you're ready, I'm here. Now go wash up, food's on the table.” “Dad?” the boy called out, pausing at the doorway. “Did you know a lady just moved in next door? She has a daughter. The most beautiful girl I've ever seen.” “Is that so? I hope we get to welcome them to the neighborhood.” “I hope you fall in love with her, Dad. Mama would want you to.”

Chapter 1

Chapter 1

The first notes of Clair de Lune filled the room. Sixteen students gripped the wooden barre, the studio falling dead silent as Christopher took his place standing in the exact center. As the music flowed into its gentle, rolling rhythm, the dancers sank down into their deep knee bends.

His eyes tracked the room, his voice cutting clearly over the melody. “Tails down. Keep your heads dropped down toward the floor. Don’t collapse your arches.”

The music sounded incredibly peaceful and elegant, but his students’ muscles were already shaking from the effort. Christopher didn’t look at the stereo; his eyes were locked entirely on Sarah’s left hip, which was tilting a fraction of an inch too high.

“You are dropping like a stone, Sarah,” he called out, his tone sharp but controlled. “I want a slow melt.”

In perfect unison, the girls sank into a deep grand plié. To anyone looking through the glass door, it looked effortless—like floating. But Christopher just saw the tremor in their thighs and the ticking clock on the wall. He had exactly forty-five minutes left of class, a mountain of bills waiting on his desk, and a six-year-old he had to pick up from after-school care across town.

He walked over to the stereo and cut the music. The silence in the studio was immediate, save for the heavy breathing of sixteen exhausted dancers.

“Girls, listen to me,” Christopher said, turning back to them with a serious but encouraging look. “You have to let the music take you, drive you. You know the choreography; we’ve done this routine dozens of times. I know you can nail it.”

“But Sir! It hurts!” Sarah groaned from the barre, rubbing her trembling thigh.

Christopher offered a rare, wry smile. “If it didn’t hurt, my mother would be up here doing it, Sarah.”

Right on cue, the studio door swung open, and Margaret—his mother—stepped into the room, a warm, knowing smile on her face.

“You see, girls?” Margaret joked, neatly adjusting her cardigan as the room erupted into giggles. “It’s entirely my fault that it hurts.”

The girls cheered with enthusiasm the moment they saw her step inside the room. Margaret was clearly a favorite around the studio.

She walked over to Christopher, giving him a gentle nudge. “Christopher, leave the girls with me to do some floor exercises and go pick up Mickie. It’s almost time.”

Christopher glanced at the clock, letting out a quiet sigh of relief. He grabbed his keys from the desk and turned back to the room. “Saved by my mother, girls. I’ll be back in ten minutes tops.”

In a completely different town, Vanessa wiped a bead of sweat from her forehead as she loaded the very last cardboard boxes into the trunk of her car.

A few feet away on the concrete pavement, her daughter, Melody, was completely oblivious to the chaos of moving day. Dressed in a bright pink tutu that fluffed out around her knees, the little girl was happily swirling and spinning under the afternoon sun.

“Honey, stop that please. You are going to hurt yourself,” Vanessa called out, keeping a watchful eye on her daughter’s clumsy footing.

“But Mom, I am a ballerina!” Melody insisted, throwing her arms up in a dramatic, joyful pose.

Vanessa couldn’t help but smile, her heart swelling even through her exhaustion. “I know, baby. But I want you to keep both feet firmly on the ground for now. Save the dance routine for our new home.”

“Mom, Dad is here,” Melody said, her voice dropping its playful tone.

Vanessa’s heart sank as she looked ahead. “Melody, come here, baby,” she said gently, holding out a hand. The little girl immediately ran to her side.

Standing barely five feet in front of them was James. He was a tall man with broad shoulders, around forty—the same age as Vanessa. He looked pristine, wearing a sharp, tailored blue suit that looked entirely out of place next to a packed moving car.

“James,” Vanessa said, keeping her voice level. “What do you want?”

“I wanted to see my daughter. I have the right.”

“Of course you do. But you cancelled your visit this weekend, remember? You had a business trip.”

James shifted uncomfortably. “I remember, Vanny.”

“Don’t call me that,” Vanessa interrupted, her voice turning to ice. “You lost that right three years ago. Remember?”

“It was a mistake, Vanny. How many times do I have to say I’m sorry?”

“James, it wasn’t a mistake, and you know it,” Vanessa said, refusing to let him rewrite history. She looked down at her daughter, softening her tone. “You want to see your daughter? See her. Honey, go hug your father. I’m right here, I’m not going anywhere.”

Melody took a tentative step forward, looking up at him with wide, anxious eyes. “Daddy, don’t get angry again. Please.”

James kneeled down, his expression softening. “I won’t, sweetheart. I made you a promise, didn’t I?”

“Of course, Daddy, and I want you to keep it,” Melody said, wrapping her small arms around his neck. “I love you, and I will call you every night to say goodnight. And I promise I’ll be the best girl for Mom so she’ll let you come visit us in our new town.”

James patted her back, glancing up at Vanessa. “Honey, I just want you to behave well. I’ll speak with Mom when the time is right—that’s not something for little girls to worry about. I love you, honey bee.”

“I love you, Daddy-doo,” Melody giggled, before adding innocently, “Mom loves you, too.”

James froze, looking up at Vanessa, his ego instantly flattered. “Really? Did she tell you that?”

“No, but she always says that after you, she will never love again,” Melody explained matter-of-factly. “She says she’s old now, and she’s wiser.”

A small, smug smile touched James’s lips. He stood up, adjusting his jacket. “Vanessa, can I speak to you for a moment?”

Vanessa crossed her arms. “What do you want, James?”

He reached into his breast pocket and pulled out a slip of paper, extending it toward her. “I want you to take this. It’s a check for your initial expenses.”

Vanessa looked at the paper, her jaw tightening. “James—”

“I know, I know,” he interrupted quickly. “It’s not a bribe, and it’s not an attempt to control you. It’s for my daughter. I’ll send more once you get settled.”

“Then don’t give it to me; give it to your daughter,” Vanessa said coldly. “She has her own savings account—the one you insisted on opening.”

James sighed, looking away. “Vanessa, I wasn’t in the right mindset back then.”

“James, please don’t play the victim. It’s not a suitable role for you,” Vanessa said, her voice dripping with exhaustion. She looked at the car, ready to leave her old life behind. “But what’s in the past is in the past. I hope you find your peace.”

James looked at her for a long moment, a sudden wave of regret crossing his face. “I loved you,” he said quietly.

Vanessa let out a slow, heavy breath. It was the one truth they had left. “That is something I will accept. I loved you, too.”

“Melody, say goodbye to your dad,” Vanessa said, her voice steady as she opened the car door. “We need to hit the road before the movers get to the new place.”

“Yes, Mom. Bye, Dad!” Melody waved one last time, her pink tutu rustling as she climbed into the backseat and buckled herself in.

Vanessa got into the driver’s seat and turned the key. The engine roared to life, a grounding, familiar hum. As she pulled away from the curb, she glanced in the rearview mirror, watching James standing on the pavement. With every foot of distance, he seemed to blend into the background, becoming just another part of the environment—distant, blurry, and small.

Gazing at the open road ahead, Vanessa let out a breath she felt like she’d been holding for three years. She hoped for a true fresh start. She hoped, with everything she had left, to leave the wreckage of the past behind her.

Hey everyone! Welcome to Dance for Two! 🩰✨

I am so excited to finally share Christopher and Vanessa’s story with you. This book is a total labor of love, featuring some of my favorite tropes: single parents, small-town fresh starts, age-gap/mature romance (she’s 40!), and a delicious slow-burn connection.

In this first chapter, we get a glimpse into their very different, yet completely parallel worlds. Christopher is drowning in the discipline of his ballet studio and the stress of single fatherhood, while Vanessa is bravely cutting ties with a painful past to give her daughter, Melody, a fresh start.

Did anyone else’s heart break a little when Melody said her mom thinks she’s “too old” to love again? I can’t wait for Christopher to prove her completely wrong! 😉
