Chapter 1Chapter One - The Weight of Silence
Chapter One - The Weight of Silence
The sirens had stopped hours ago.
Now the city just hummed - that low, electric sound that never really sleeps.
Darnell sat on the edge of the motel bed, elbows on his knees, staring at the blood drying on his knuckles. The TV flickered in front of him, muted, showing a preacher talking about redemption. He almost laughed. Redemption was a word for people who hadn't already crossed the line.
Outside, the desert wind pushed against the thin curtains, carrying the smell of dust and gasoline. Somewhere down the highway, a train groaned through the night - slow, heavy, like it was dragging the weight of every bad decision he'd ever made.
He reached for the pack of cigarettes on the nightstand, found it empty, and tossed it aside. The sound it made was small, but it felt final.
He'd done what he came to do.
Now he had to live with it.
The phone buzzed once. A message. No name, just a number he didn't recognize.
> You're not done.
Darnell stared at the screen until the words blurred. Then he stood, grabbed his jacket, and stepped into the heat. The sun was rising over the Whisper Route - the same road he'd sworn he'd never walk again.
And somewhere out there, someone was waiting to make sure he did.
