Chapter 1
I had just killed yet another demonic spirit who tried to sneak attack me from behind. I picked up my dagger from the pile of black ash that’s left of the demon on the grass. My breathing was heavy, and I took two deep breaths to calm myself down after another successful fight. I recently went out at night; hunting demonic spirits had become a nightly ritual for me over the past month.
My mother had disappeared six years ago, and I started my search for again. My name is Nyxie Playfield, and I’m seventeen years old. I have long metallic pink hair, brown eyes. I’m skinny but athletic, and exquisite. I am currently living with my father and his current wife. When I was younger, my mother was training me to fight off evil demonic spirits.
She said they inhabit our world by coming through the thinning Veil. Our job was to protect humans by killing them and sending them back to wherever it is they came from. My mother is Catherine Playfield. She had given me this dagger when I had turned twelve.
She told me I was a Psychic Medium because I could communicate with the dead. One night she went out and never returned, which is why I am sent to live with Jack and his new family. Unfortunately, Jack didn’t believe in the supernatural Mediums, so he had taken me to see a doctor and they placed me on medication to stop me from seeing the spirits.
I had taken the medication for the past five years. But I had stopped taking them a few months ago because I wanted to speak with the spirits and see if they could help me locate my mother’s whereabouts. She had told me a story about a spirit named Sinergy. Sinergy was a badass warrior who had died many years ago in a great battle. I don’t know why I thought about her at a time like this, but I couldn’t help my wandering mind. I sighed heavily as I placed my dagger back into the black sheath on my right leg. I stood up and froze.
A female spirit was standing silently before me. She was beautiful. She had long purple hair that’s placed into a tight bun on top of her head. She wore a tight black leather one piece that was shining in the streetlights. Her long black boots came up to her knees, and her makeup was on point. It had been six years since I had last seen a spirit that wasn’t a demon. So, I was a bit freaked out, staring at her right now.
“I am Sinergy,” she replied in a powerful voice. “Why did you summon me here, Lifeless girl?” She demanded.
“I-I didn’t summon you?” I replied, finding my voice. “You can leave now.”
Sinergy looked down at the pile of ashes, then looked back up at me. “Did you kill that demonic spirit, Lifeless?” She asked.
“Yeah,” I replied. “He attacked me… so I killed him.”
I was standing in the park and decided it was time to head home. I looked up when I heard someone walking towards me. I saw three figures heading my way and panic shot throughout my entire body. I kept my head down as I walked towards them. I could hear them talking amongst themselves and I glanced at them as I passed by. It was two guys and a girl.
The guy standing closest to me was hot. He had dark hair and sparkling blue eyes. He wore a black leather jacket, jeans, a black T-shirt, with black Jordan’s. He gave me the once over with his eyes before turning his attention back towards his friends. I’ve relieved when nothing happened and had almost reached the wooden fence when Sinergy spoke to them.
“The Lifeless girl over there just killed that demonic spirit,” she said. “And she summoned me here,” she added. “We need to hand her over to the Shaman King to face the punishment of her crimes.”
“Hey,” A male called to me. I ignored him as I kept my gaze fixed on the entrance. “Lifeless, I’m talking to you!” I bolted and kept my gaze fixed on the entrance, and someone who was much stronger than I was quickly tackled me. They thrust my face into the grass, and I could feel the sharp blades poking me on the left cheek and I could smell the earth beneath me. It was the popular guy, and he kept his body over mine as he turned his face and looked over at me. “You are under arrest for summoning a Shaman Spirit Companion Lifeless girl,” he said as he pulled me up to my feet and pulled out a pair of silver handcuffs.
He placed my wrists behind my back and into the slots. He tightened them as tight as he could, make my wrists throb in sharp pain. He held me by my right arm, and I kept my head down. I had absolutely no idea who the hell any of these people were, so I stayed silent and hid behind my long pink hair so they couldn’t see my eyes.
“Nice job, Solas,” the other guy said as he and the girl along with Sinergy stopped near us. “I can turn her over to your father?”
“That won’t be necessary, Varric,” Solas replied. “I’ll turn her into my father, myself,” he paused as he yanked my dagger out of the sheath on my right leg. He placed it on the inside of his jacket pocket and looked back at me. “You guys finish out our current mission. I’ll meet you back at the academy.”
“You got it,” Varric replied. As he and the girl walked out of the wooden fence opening and disappeared down the street.
“It looks like it’s just you and me, Lifeless,” Solas replied as he roughly pushed me forward. I said nothing as we exited the park and walked to a nearby car. He opened the passenger side door and helped me sit down so I wouldn’t hit my head on the roof of his car. After I’m seated, he reached across my body and placed the seat belt tightly into place. It was really uncomfortable having my hands cuffed behind my back, but I just dealt with it. Solas pulled himself out of the car and closed the door.
He walked around the front and opened the driver’s side door and sat down. He closed his door and put the key into the ignition and turned it. The engine roared to life, and the headlights turned on. Solas reached over and fastened his seat belt before he put the car in drive and pulled away from the curb.“So,” Solas replied as I stared straight ahead. “What’s your name Lifeless?” I didn’t respond, and he frowned. “My name is Evan Reigns,” he went on. “But my friends call me Solas. You can call me Solas too.” He added.
I yawned in boredom and said nothing. This angered Sinergy, who had apparently gotten into the back seat of his car when I wasn’t looking. “You had better show some respect towards the Shaman Prince, your Lifeless girl,” she hissed in my ear. “For you are in the presence of royalty.”
“It’s alright, Sinergy,” Solas replied as he drove. “This Lifeless girl will talk to me when she is ready… am I right?” He asked as he glanced over at me. I kept myself silent as he talked at me. “I’ll break her from this silent treatment, Sinergy,” he said. “Don’t you worry about that.”
This guy is a prince?...
“Of course, he’s a prince,” Sinergy snapped angrily at me. I turned my head and looked at her and she made a face at me. “Yes,” she replied. “I can read your mind… you stupid Lifeless girl.” She turned her attention towards Solas. “Why am I bonding with this Lifeless girl, Solas?” she asked him.
“That’s a good question, Sinergy,” he replied as he looked at me. “Good thing we’ve reached our destination.” I looked out my window and am surprised to see an immense building I had never noticed before. I had come to this park many times and barely noticed it now.
What is this place?...
“Lifeless girl, I would like to welcome to The Sovereign Academy of Shamans,” Sinergy replied as she read my mind again. “And you won’t be leaving this place for any reason…”
