Chapter 1

BELLUCCI’S FUDGE BROWNIE BOUNTYChapter One: Classic Dark FudgeScripture:“For nothing is secret, that shall not be made manifest.”Luke 8:17

Italian Quote:La voce corre più veloce del sangue.A rumor runs faster than blood.

Three-Card Tarot Spread:The Devil – manipulation, bondage, jailhouse influence.Seven of Swords – theft, deceit, strategy without fingerprints.Judgment – reckoning, exposure, the call that wakes the dead.

Valeri Caronna knew trouble by the way paper felt in her hand.

Some pages were innocent. Thin, soft, harmless little things. Grocery lists. Book orders. Contest forms. Recipes written by old women with beautiful cursive and bad tempers.

Other pages had weight.

The Classic Dark Fudge recipe card had weight.

It sat on her desk inside Caronna Publishing between a stack of brownie submissions and a half-cold cup of coffee. Outside the office windows, New Orleans dragged itself into morning with wet streets, iron balconies, and that old city smell of rain, sugar, river mud, and secrets.

The Tre Quarti Baking Contest was supposed to be simple.

Five Families.

One city.

One table.

Twelve brownie entries.

No drama beyond whose grandmother used too much butter and whose bakery lied about Madagascar vanilla.

Valeri turned the card over.

On the back, pressed behind neat judging notes, someone had written three words in dark ink.

DEAD OR ALIVE.

She stared at it.

Not because the words frightened her.

Because they were theatrical.

And theatrical meant Kevin.

Her phone rang before she could touch the tarot deck.

“Caronna Publishing,” she answered.

A man’s voice came through, low and greasy. “This Valeri?”

“Who’s asking?”

“Greco. Bondsman.”

Valeri sat very still.

Greco cleared his throat. “I’m calling about the Bellucci situation.”

“There is no Bellucci situation.”

“That ain’t what I heard.”

“What exactly did you hear?”

A pause.

Then:

“I heard somebody’s handling the reward structure through your office.”

The room sharpened.

Reward.

There it was.

Not bounty. Not yet. Kevin was too smart to start with the loud word. He let other people walk toward it.

Valeri looked again at the recipe card.

Classic Dark Fudge.

Dead or alive.

She hung up without saying goodbye.

Then she pulled three cards.

The Devil.

Seven of Swords.

Judgment.

Valeri exhaled through her nose.

“Kevin,” she whispered.

By noon, Alto security had logged two separate mentions of Vinny’s name. By three, Romano heard contest volunteers whispering near a café counter. By sunset, Lipari had chased three money rumors that led nowhere.

No cash.

No contract.

No account.

No proof.

Just a rumor spreading through the city like smoke under a locked door.

And at the center of it was Vinny Bellucci, accused of nothing, touched by nothing, yet shadowed all the same.

That night, Valeri climbed the servants’ stairs to the attic rooms of the Bellucci mansion.

Vinny was already by the window nook.

Dark shirt. Still hands. Eyes turned toward the city like he was listening to something beneath the street.

On the small table between them sat a plate of Classic Dark Fudge brownies.

Valeri rolled Brownie Kush, slow and practiced, the paper tucked between her fingers like another kind of prayer.

Vinny watched her.

She handed him the recipe card.

He read the back.

His jaw moved once.

“That’s Kevin.”

“I know.”

“He didn’t hire anybody.”

“No,” Valeri said. “He told a story.”

Vinny looked out the attic window.

“And now the city’s reading it aloud.”

They smoked in silence.

The brownie was rich, dark, almost bitter. The kind of sweet that made a person think of old kitchens, closed doors, and things buried under flour tins.

Valeri finally said, “The Devil. Seven of Swords. Judgment.”

Vinny nodded once.

“Then we don’t chase the rumor,” he said. “We find who repeated it first.”

Down below, the mansion settled into its after-hours quiet.

Above the city, in the attic, smoke curled toward the glass.

And somewhere inside a jail cell, Kevin Paul Richardson had not spent a dime.

But the hunt had begun.

Prayer:Lord, reveal the hand behind the whisper and keep the innocent from the trap. Amen.
