CHAPTER One part 1; THE GIRL IN THE RAIN

Rain fell without mercy.

It poured over the city as though the heavens were trying to wash away a sin too great for the earth to bear.

A girl ran through the deserted streets, her ragged breaths barely louder than the storm itself. Her academy uniform clung to her trembling body, soaked to the skin, while strands of dark hair hid her tear-filled eyes.

She clutched a small silver key tightly against her chest.

Not because it was valuable.

Because she would rather die than let anyone take it.

Behind her…

Footsteps echoed through the rain.

Slow.

Measured.

Unhurried.

Whoever was following her already knew she had nowhere left to run.

The girl stumbled into a narrow alley behind Westbridge Academy’s Building C, catching herself against the cold brick wall. Her chest burned with every breath. Her legs begged her to stop.

She pressed a shaking hand over her mouth, trying to silence her breathing.

Silence.

No footsteps.

No voices.

Nothing.

Seconds passed.

Then another.

She closed her eyes, allowing herself the smallest smile.

“I… made it.”

Her whisper disappeared into the storm.

She looked down at the silver key and gently brushed her thumb across its surface.

“They’ll never have you…”

A voice answered from the darkness.

“I finally found you.”

Every drop of blood in her body turned to ice.

Slowly…

She turned around.

Lightning split the sky open.

For only a heartbeat, a tall silhouette stood before her.

Its face remained hidden.

Then—

A scream tore through the night.

And was swallowed by the storm.

An hour later…

Rain crashed against the streets surrounding Westbridge Academy hard enough to drown the sound of sirens.

Blue and red police lights flickered violently across the soaked pavement as patrol cars crowded the alley behind Building C.

Officers sealed off the area while paramedics hurried through the downpour carrying medical bags and stretchers. Their radios crackled beneath the roar of thunder. Faculty members stood beneath umbrellas, speaking in hushed voices while forensic photographers documented every inch of the alley.

The smell of wet concrete mixed with blood hung heavily in the air.

Near the center of the alley, partially hidden behind overturned crates and shattered garbage bins, lay what remained of a teenage girl.

Her academy blazer was torn beyond recognition, soaked dark with rainwater and blood. One sleeve had been ripped almost completely away. Bruises stained her arms in deep shades of purple and blue.

Her shoes were gone.

So was her student ID.

It looked as though she had been running for her life.

An officer turned away, covering his mouth.

“Jesus Christ…”

A paramedic knelt beside the body.

He already knew there was no pulse.

Still…

He checked.

Because sometimes hope survives longer than reason.

“We’re too late,” he said quietly.

No one answered.

The girl’s fingers remained tightly wrapped around something.

The paramedic carefully opened her hand.

A small silver key slipped into his palm.

He frowned.

“What is this?”

The lead detective stepped closer, studying it for several silent moments.

“I don’t know,” he replied.

“But someone was willing to kill for it.”

Silence settled over the alley.

Then the detective looked up.

Security cameras covered every corner of the building.

A young officer let out a relieved breath.

“Then we have footage.”

Before anyone could celebrate, a security supervisor came running toward them, his face pale.

“Detective…”

“What is it?”

“The recordings…”

He swallowed hard.

“They’re gone.”

“What do you mean?”

“Every camera covering Building C.”

His voice trembled.

“Everything recorded between seven and eight o’clock tonight has been erased.”

Not corrupted.

Not damaged.

Erased.

Someone hadn’t simply committed murder.

Someone had planned it.

Inside the academy, tension spread quietly through the administration building.

The Head Teacher Evelyn Marrow arrived just as the last ambulance left the campus.

Her expression never changed.

Only tightened.

“This cannot spread,” she said firmly.

“It already has,” one teacher replied. “The students are talking.”

She exhaled slowly.

“Send them back.”

Within minutes, students were being escorted away from the campus.

“No questions.”

“Return to your dormitories.”

“Stay inside.”

Fear spreads faster than the rain.

Among the crowd walked five students.

Aaliyah, Nova, Selene, Sage and Lina.

None of them spoke for several moments.

Finally, Nova broke the silence.

“So… it’s true.”

“They don’t send this many police officers unless someone dies,” Sage answered quietly.

Lina stared toward the flashing lights.

“I can’t believe it…”

Aaliyah slowed her pace.

Something about the academy felt different.

Not frightening.

Wrong.

As if something had begun that would never truly end.

“This isn’t over,” she whispered.

Nova glanced at her.

“You feel it too?”

Aaliyah nodded.

Before anyone could speak again—

Lina suddenly froze.

Her umbrella slipped from her hand and struck the wet pavement.

“Aaliyah…” she called out.

Her voice cracked.

“I know her.”

Everyone turned.

“What?” Sage whispered.

With trembling hands, Lina pulled out her phone.

“I received a message from her..”

“…less than an hour ago.”

The screen showed only five words.

“If I die… trust no one.”

The air seemed to freeze.

Then

Her phone vibrated.

A new message.

From the same number.

From the girl whose body now lay beneath a white sheet.

Lina’s breathing stopped.

The message appeared.

“You’re already too late.”

Morning arrived beneath skies the color of wet ash.

The rain had weakened during the night, yet it refused to leave Westbridge Academy, hanging over the campus like a memory no one could escape.

From a distance, everything looked ordinary.

Students hurried along the stone pathways with umbrellas overhead. Teachers greeted classes with practiced smiles. Lockers slammed shut. Morning announcements echoed through the halls with their usual calm rhythm.

Life had resumed.

Or at least…

it was pretending to.

Only one place refused to join the illusion.

Behind Building C, yellow police tape still stretched across the narrow alley, glistening beneath the rain.

Every student who walked past looked.

Even those pretending not to.

Rumors drifted through the corridors faster than footsteps.

“They caught the killer.”

“No… the cameras were destroyed.”

“My roommate said they found something beside the body.”

“I heard she wasn’t even supposed to be there.”

Each hallway carried a different version of the truth.

None of them sounded convincing.

Inside the administration wing, silence settled over a long wooden conference table scattered with student files, schedules, and security reports.

No one spoke when Head Teacher Evelyn Marrow entered.

Conversations died immediately.

Even the ticking wall clock suddenly sounded louder.

She remained standing.

Arms crossed.

Eyes unreadable.

“We continue as scheduled,” she said.

Coach Darius frowned.

“A student was murdered.”

“And another hundred are watching how we respond,” Evelyn answered without raising her voice.

“If we allow panic to spread…”

She looked around the room.

“…then whoever did this wins twice.”

No one argued.

Mr. Laurent adjusted his glasses.

“Parents are already calling.”

“They will receive a statement.”

Mr. Clark slid another folder across the table.

“We have another issue.”

“The graduating class left yesterday.”

“Several clubs are now below minimum enrollment.”

“We’ll be receiving three transfer students.”

Laurent sighed quietly.

“Terrible timing.”

Evelyn stared at the rain beyond the windows.

“Everything about this timing is terrible.”

None of them noticed the security monitor mounted above the office door.

One camera blinked.

Once.

Then it went dark.

Classroom 3C was considerably louder than the hallway outside.

Their teacher still hadn’t arrived.

Ten minutes passed.

Then fifteen.

No one complained.

After last night…

silence somehow felt safer than asking questions.

Near the back windows, Aaliyah sat with Nova, Selene, Sage, and Lina.

Rain tapped gently against the glass.

Nova leaned forward.

“So we’re actually doing this?”

“We’re talking,” Sage corrected.

“Talking becomes investigating surprisingly fast,” Lina muttered.

Nova smiled.

“Exactly.”

Aaliyah never smiled back.

“The alley is still sealed.”

“They’re hiding something.”

“Or protecting something,” Sage replied.

“Our spot overlooks Building C,” Lina whispered.

“We could see what’s happening after school.”

No one rejected the idea.

Perhaps because every one of them had already made the decision in silence.

“After school,” Aaliyah agreed.

Selene continued staring through the rain.

“If someone witnessed the murder…”

She paused.

“…they may still be watching.”

No one answered.

Outside, students laughed beneath colorful umbrellas.

Somebody complained about homework.

Someone chased a friend across the courtyard.

Life continued.

Yet for reasons none of them could explain…

Westbridge Academy no longer felt like a school.

It felt like a place waiting for something else to happen.
