Chapter One: The Day Love Died

The rain fell without mercy.

Ava Thompson stood beneath the gray sky, her fingers trembling as she stared at the engagement ring lying in the palm of her hand. It sparkled beautifully, mocking the tears rolling down her cheeks.

"I can't do this anymore."

Those five words echoed in her mind.

Daniel—the man she had loved for four years, the man she had imagined spending forever with—had walked away without looking back.

"It isn't you," he'd said.

"It never is," she whispered bitterly.

Around her, strangers hurried past with umbrellas, laughing, talking, living their lives as though the world hadn't just ended.

For Ava, it had.

She slipped the ring into her pocket and walked through the rain until she reached her tiny apartment. The silence inside was louder than the storm outside.

Pictures of happier days decorated the walls.

Birthdays.

Beach trips.

Late-night coffee dates.

She took them down one by one.

By midnight, every memory was packed into a cardboard box.

She sat on the floor beside it, hugging her knees.

"Maybe love isn't meant for everyone," she whispered into the darkness.

The following weeks became a blur.

She buried herself in work at the publishing company where she worked as an editor. Every smile she gave her colleagues was practiced. Every laugh was fake.

No one noticed how exhausted she really was.

One evening, her best friend, Lily, dropped by with pizza and ice cream.

"You've been hiding from the world," Lily said.

"I'm healing."

"No," Lily replied softly. "You're surviving. There's a difference."

Ava forced a smile.

"I'm done with love."

Lily laughed.

"You say that now."

"I mean it."

"Life has a funny way of proving us wrong."

Ava shook her head.

"Not this time."

Outside, the rain had finally stopped.

She had no idea that somewhere across the city, a man named Noah Carter was also trying to rebuild a life he never imagined would fall apart.

Neither of them knew that fate had already begun writing a story their broken hearts couldn't yet imagine.

Sometimes, the greatest love story doesn't begin with a first kiss.

Sometimes...

It begins with goodbye.

Obsidian: He's hilarious. Like, actually. I loved it. You're writing style is great, although you could do with a few less murmurs and mutters. I know it sounds critical, but I have the same problem and I hate it. Overall, it was one of the best stories I've read on here so far. I liked it better than those M...
