Chapter 1: The Glass Looking Glass
The most dangerous predators in this city donât hide in the dark; they smile at you from behind a bar under a million dollars' worth of crystal chandeliers.
Alice knew exactly how the high-society game was played.
You put on a thousand-dollar silk dress, you freeze your emotions into a flawless expression of disinterest, and you pretend the golden cage your family built doesnât choke you to death every single morning.
But tonight, Alice wasn't here to play a debutante.
She was here on a hunt.
The heavy mahogany doors of The Looking Glass swung open, letting out a low, bass-heavy thrum that vibrated right through the soles of Aliceâs stilettos.
The exclusive underground VIP lounge was a playground for the corrupt, the obscenely wealthy, and the beautifully damned.
It was a space designed by Hatter to help the city's elite act out their worst impulses while the rest of the world slept.
Alice smoothed down her dark dress, her eyes scanning the room with cold, clinical precision.
Her mother, The Queen, had a leak in her corporate empire.
Highly classified financial ledgers had been lifted from the family vault, and all digital trails stopped right here, beneath the velvet ropes of Hatterâs establishment.
"Don't look too intense, Alice," a voice crackled in her hidden earpiece.
It was Cheshire, his tone dripping with his usual lazy amusement.
"You look like you're about to execute someone.
Relax.
Have a drink.
The broker we're looking for operates out of the central VIP bar tonight."
"I am relaxed, Cheshire," Alice muttered under her breath, stepping down the marble stairs.
"I just want my family's files back before my mother uses my head as a stepping stone for her next merger."
"Then look toward the center island," Cheshire instructed, a typing sound clicking in the background.
"The target is working the shakers tonight."
Alice adjusted her posture and drifted toward the main circular bar, a masterpiece of frosted glass and gold trim.
The crowd was dense, thick with the scent of expensive cigars and heavy perfumes, but the moment she reached the counter, the noise of the room seemed to fade into a dull hum.
Behind the bar stood a young man.
He was impeccably dressed, wearing a tailored, pristine white bodysuit waistcoat that hugged a surprisingly petite and slender frame.
His hair was styled flawlessly, not a single strand out of place.
He looked sweet.
He looked harmless.
With his soft eyes, delicate features, and a polite, accommodating smile, he looked like a gentle creature that had accidentally wandered into a den of wolves.
Baby, I just want to know... how did you do it? What were you thinking?
The thought flashed unbidden through Aliceâs mind.
She pulled out a high-backed leather stool and sat down directly across from him.
Up close, his innocent appearance was almost jarring compared to the heavy, toxic atmosphere of the lounge.
He looked like an angel operating in purgatory.
"Good evening, madam," the bartender spoke, his voice a smooth, gentle melody that sent an unexpected jolt straight down Alice's spine.
He placed a clean linen napkin down with a perfectly manicured hand.
"Welcome to The Looking Glass.
What can I serve you tonight?"
Alice rested her chin on her hand, leaning in just close enough to catch the subtle scent of crisp linen and mint radiating from him.
She read the silver nametag pinned neatly to his vest. Bunny.
"I'm looking for something specific, Bunny," Alice said, her voice laced with the cool authority she had practiced her entire life.
"Something rare. Something that shouldn't be out in the open."
Bunny didn't tilt his head.
His polite smile didn't even waver, but Alice noticed a fractional change in his stance.
The accommodating bartender persona remained perfectly intact, yet a strange, sudden tension filled the narrow space separating them.
"We have a very extensive cellar, madam," Bunny replied smoothly, picking up a crystal mixing glass and a long bar spoon.
"If it exists in this city, I can usually find it for you."
"The thing I'm looking for isn't in a bottle," Alice murmured, her eyes locking onto his.
"It's a collection of data. Encrypted files.
Belonging to the house of corporate royalty.
Word on the street is that a certain white rabbit hopped away with them.
"Bunny began to pour a clear spirit into the glass.
The movement of his hands was hypnoticâflawless, elegant, and entirely unhurried.
He looked incredibly cute in that structured vest, so utterly unthreatening that any ordinary investigator would have dismissed him instantly.
But Alice was an apex predator raised by the most ruthless corporate shark in the country.
She didn't look at the surface; she looked for the cracks. And then, she saw it.
As Bunny raised his eyes to meet hers, the innocent, sweet light in his gaze vanished for a fraction of a second. In its place was a cold, sharp, and brilliantly chaotic intelligence.
It was the look of a mastermind who wasn't just surviving the underworldâhe was running it.
The way that you move makes me want to watch. And you look so cute in that bodysuit. Ooh, it makes me unable to hold it anymore. Baby, you give me butterflies.
A sudden, intense rush of heat bloomed in Aliceâs chest.
Her heart hammered against her ribs.
It wasn't fear.
It was an intoxicating, electric thrill.
For the first time in her life, she wasn't bored.
She wasn't trapped.
She was looking at a riddle she desperately wanted to solve.
"Is that so?" Bunny said softly, his voice dropping an octave, losing a bit of its rehearsed hospitality.
He leaned forward over the bar counter, bringing his face inches from hers.
The polite mask was still there, but underneath, something wild was starting to peek through.
"A white rabbit sounds like a very small, very fragile creature to be carrying such heavy secrets.
Aren't you afraid a predator might catch him?"
"I'm Alice," she whispered, her lips curving into a dangerous, dark smile as she claimed her position in the game.
"And in this story, I'm the one doing the hunting.
Take the lead if you want, but you look wild when you run.
"Bunny's eyes darkened, the pupils dilating slightly under the ambient neon lighting of the lounge.
He placed the freshly mixed cocktail in front of her.
It was a crystal-clear liquid with a single, perfectly round ice sphere floating in the center.
"A custom blend, on the house," Bunny murmured, his gaze holding hers with an intense, possessive grip that made her breath hitch.
"Just to make sure that you're ready for whatever comes next."
"Ready for what?" Alice asked, her fingers brushing against his as she reached for the glass.
The brief contact felt like static electricity, a jolt that made her inner corporate ice queen melt into pure, unadulterated desire.
Bunny didn't pull his hand away immediately.
He let his thumb slide over the back of her knuckles, a slow, deliberate movement that felt less like a bartender serving a guest and more like a captor marking his prize.
"Ready to go down the rabbit hole, Alice," Bunny whispered, a small, dark, and utterly beautiful smirk breaking across his innocent face.
"Because you see, people think I'm very neat on the surface.
But they have no idea what kind of freak lives underneath.
"Before Alice could respond, a sudden commotion broke out near the VIP entrance.
March, the broad-shouldered security chief, was aggressively intercepting two men in dark tailored suitsâthe King's political cleanup crew.
The atmosphere in the lounge instantly shifted from seductive luxury to volatile danger.
Bunny smoothly pulled his hand back, his expression instantly reverting to that of a polite, shocked bartender as he stepped away to assist a different customer, vanishing into the crowded haze of the bar.
Alice looked down at her drink.
Resting perfectly balanced against the base of the crystal glass was a tiny, pristine white flash drive wrapped in a velvet napkin.
On the fabric, written in elegant, precise handwriting, were five words:
Show me how you hunt.
Aliceâs heart thudded violently against her chest as she pocketed the drive.
She had come to find the thief who stole her family's empire, but as she looked back through the crowded lounge searching for the innocent boy in the white vest, she realized a terrifying truth.
She hadn't caught the rabbit; the rabbit had just opened the door to his cage, and she had walked right in.
