Grandmother

"Sometimes a person's real story begins only after they are gone."

It was 5:17 a.m.

The entire house was wrapped in silence. Outside, the old neem tree swayed gently in the morning breeze, but inside, everything felt strangely still.

Aarohi suddenly woke up.

She picked up her phone.

12 missed calls.

All from one person.

Papa.

A strange fear settled in her chest.

She immediately called him back.

"Papa... what happened?"

For a few seconds, there was complete silence.

Then she heard his trembling voice.

"Aaru... Dadi is no more."

Her world stopped.

The phone almost slipped from her hand.

"No... Papa... please don't say that. I talked to her yesterday. She was perfectly fine..."

There was no reply.

Sometimes silence hurts more than words.

Three hours later, Aarohi reached her ancestral village from Jaipur.

The house was crowded with relatives.

Some were crying.

Some were whispering.

Some simply stared at the floor.

But Aarohi saw only one person.

Her grandmother.

Covered in a white sheet.

The same grandmother who called her every morning just to ask,

"Did you have breakfast?"

The same grandmother who always smiled and said,

"Don't worry, beta. Everything will be alright."

The same grandmother who never forgot to make kheer whenever Aarohi came home.

Now...

She was completely still.

Aarohi slowly walked toward her.

She held her grandmother's hand.

It was cold.

Tears rolled down her cheeks without making a sound.

"Please wake up, Dadi..."

"You promised you'd never leave me..."

But this time...

There was no answer.

The sun disappeared behind the fields.

Relatives slowly began leaving.

The once noisy house became painfully quiet.

Aarohi couldn't sleep.

She quietly walked into her grandmother's room.

Everything was exactly where it had always been.

Her reading glasses.

Her knitting basket.

An old copy of the Ramayan.

A small brass clock.

And near the window...

The wooden rocking chair where Dadi spent every evening.

Now it stood empty.

Aarohi gently opened the old wooden cupboard.

A familiar fragrance of sandalwood and old books filled the room.

At the bottom of the cupboard, she noticed a small iron box.

It was locked.

A faded piece of paper was stuck to the lid.

It read—

"This box belongs only to Aarohi."

Her heartbeat grew faster.

"For me...?"

She searched the room for nearly thirty minutes.

Finally...

Inside the old Ramayan, she found a tiny rusty key.

With trembling hands, she unlocked the box.

Inside were only three things.

An old black-and-white photograph.

A small silver locket.

A thick leather-bound diary.

She slowly opened the diary.

On the very first page, neat handwriting welcomed her.

> "If you are reading this diary... it means I am no longer alive."

A chill ran down Aarohi's spine.

She turned the page.

The first sentence made her freeze.

> "Everyone believes your grandfather was the first love of my life..."

She kept reading.

The next line stole her breath.

> "But that is not the truth."

The diary slipped slightly in her hands.

She whispered,

"Dadi... who were you?"

At that exact moment...

A strong gust of wind entered through the open window.

The empty rocking chair moved on its own.

Aarohi slowly looked up.

The room was empty.

Yet, for the first time in her life...

She felt as if her grandmother's story had only just begun.
