Chapter 1
Lately, I have felt as though I am losing myself piece by piece, and I do not know how to find my way back. There was a time when I knew exactly who I was. I worked hard, performed at the top of my class, and took pride in the person I was becoming. Then, during my final year, something changed. I began spending more time online and talking to boys, and although I never intended to compromise my own boundaries, I sometimes wonder whether I gradually drifted away from the values that once grounded me. One of those boys became important to me, but some of our conversations left me feeling uncomfortable and guilty. Rather than feeling understood, I felt increasingly confused. When my friend pointed out that the way I spoke or acted could be misunderstood, her words stayed with me. I kept asking myself, “Is this really me?” Since then, I have questioned nearly everything about myself.
The truth is that this is not only about those conversations. It is about everything happening around me. There are problems at home that weigh heavily on my heart, and the pressure from my parents feels impossible to escape. I feel as though everyone expects me to be the girl who always succeeds, always earns the best grades, and always has everything under control, yet inside I feel as though I am falling apart. My grades are no longer what they used to be, and every mistake feels like proof that I have failed the person I once was. I know people still see me as capable, but they do not see the exhaustion, the guilt, the fear, or the constant struggle in my own mind.
I have also withdrawn from my friends. It is not because I stopped caring about them, but because I do not want anyone to see the version of me that feels broken and confused. I hide because I am afraid that if people saw how much I am struggling, they would be disappointed or think less of me. Sometimes it feels safer to be alone than to risk being truly seen. Yet being alone has only made the loneliness more intense. I feel as though I am drowning beneath thoughts that never seem to stop, while everyone around me believes I am simply quiet or busy. I carry so much shame that I begin to believe I deserve it, even though, deep down, I wish someone would look at me and ask whether I am truly okay.
The hardest part is that I genuinely want to improve. I want to return to the person who felt close to Allah, who had discipline, who studied with purpose, and who lived according to the values she believed in. But every time I decide to change, I procrastinate. I tell myself I will start tomorrow, and tomorrow becomes another tomorrow. That cycle makes me feel even more guilty, as though I am watching my own life from the outside while remaining stuck in the same place. I do not hate myself because I believe I am beyond hope. I hate this feeling of being lost, of no longer recognizing myself, and of watching everyone else move forward while I remain still.
Despite everything, there is still a small part of me that has not given up. It is the part that keeps asking whether this is truly who I am, because deep down I know this is not the life I want. I want peace instead of constant guilt. I want to stop hiding. I want to heal from the pressure, the loneliness, and the fear that I have ruined myself. More than anything, I want to believe that I can become the person I dream of being—not because I was never broken, but because I chose to keep trying, even when I felt as though I was drowning.
