Prologue
The King Who Could Not Die.
No one remembered the first time the bells rang.
Every child born beneath the Moon Goddess’ sky grew up hearing the same story.
If the Black Bells of Blackthorn Citadel ever sound after midnight, stay inside your home. Lock every door. Extinguish every candle. Do not answer a knock, no matter whose voice calls your name.
Most dismissed it as another tale told to frighten children.
Until the bells rang.
On a moonless night, the kingdom awoke to a sound that had not echoed across the mountains in generations.
One...
Two...
Three...
The deep toll rolled over forests, rivers, and sleeping villages, each chime heavier than the last.
Lights flickered to life behind cottage windows.
Dogs whimpered.
Horses kicked violently inside their stables.
Far from the royal capital, an old shepherd looked toward the distant silhouette of Blackthorn Citadel and whispered a prayer with trembling lips.
“They’ve awakened the King...”
Snow drifted across the palace courtyard as hundreds of Royal Sentinels rushed into formation.
No one spoke.
No one dared ask why they had been summoned in the middle of the night.
Captain Rhydian tightened the leather strap around his sword and glanced toward the towering doors of the throne hall.
“They’ve never called all of us before,” a young sentinel murmured.
“Then pray you survive whatever comes next.”
The massive doors slowly opened.
Every sentinel immediately knelt.
Heavy footsteps echoed across the frozen stone.
Measured.
Unhurried.
A presence settled over the courtyard with such overwhelming weight that several younger warriors struggled to breathe.
No one lifted their head.
No one needed to.
They already knew who had arrived.
For centuries, children had grown into grandparents without ever seeing their king.
Some believed he had become more spirit than wolf.
Others claimed he had abandoned sleep altogether.
Many wondered whether he still possessed a beating heart.
The footsteps stopped.
A calm voice broke the silence.
“Rise.”
Hundreds obeyed at once.
Captain Rhydian dared a single glance.
Alpha King Vaelor Draven Ashrune stood at the top of the palace steps, dressed entirely in black.
No jewels adorned his clothing.
No extravagant cloak trailed behind him.
Only an obsidian crown rested upon dark hair that neither grayed nor shortened with age.
He looked no older than thirty.
He had looked the same for longer than anyone could remember.
Snowflakes drifted toward him.
None touched him.
They melted before reaching his shoulders.
Rhydian lowered his eyes immediately.
Legends had never prepared him for the suffocating reality of standing before the Immortal King.
Vaelor’s gaze swept across the assembled warriors.
“There has been a disturbance.”
No one interrupted.
“The eastern watchtowers reported it shortly before midnight.”
Still, no questions came.
Questions were rarely asked.
The king continued.
“Ride at first light.”
“Where, Your Majesty?” Rhydian asked carefully.
Vaelor looked beyond the palace walls.
Toward mountains hidden by darkness.
“South.”
Nothing more.
No explanation.
No destination.
Yet every sentinel accepted the order without hesitation.
When the Alpha King spoke, kingdoms moved.
Hours later...
The palace had fallen silent once more.
Vaelor stood alone upon the highest balcony in Blackthorn Citadel.
Cold wind swept through the mountains, carrying the scent of pine, rain... and something else.
Something he had not sensed in centuries.
His golden eyes closed.
The feeling vanished.
“...Impossible.”
The word escaped him almost as a whisper.
Behind him, ancient doors creaked open.
An elderly man entered without announcement.
Unlike everyone else in the kingdom, he neither bowed nor knelt.
“You summoned me.”
Vaelor remained facing the horizon.
“Elder Maelor.”
The old man stepped beside him.
“I heard the bells.”
“They woke the kingdom.”
“They haven’t rung since...”
He stopped himself.
Some memories were better left unfinished.
For several moments, neither spoke.
Finally, the elder broke the silence.
“What did you feel?”
Vaelor answered without looking at him.
“A heartbeat.”
The elder frowned.
“Whose?”
“I don’t know.”
“You’ve lived for a thousand years.”
“I know.”
“You’ve never mistaken another wolf’s heartbeat.”
“I know.”
Silence returned.
The old man’s weathered face slowly tightened.
“If it isn’t another wolf...”
Vaelor finally turned.
For the briefest moment, something flickered in his eyes.
Not fear.
Not anger.
Recognition.
“So it seems.”
The elder drew a slow breath.
“You believe...”
“I believe nothing.”
His voice remained calm.
“But if I’m right...”
He left the sentence unfinished.
Outside, the wind changed direction.
Far beyond the palace.
Far beyond the mountains.
Somewhere in a forgotten village that had never mattered to kings...
A young woman slept peacefully, unaware that fate had quietly begun walking toward her.
She did not know her name had once been whispered in royal halls.
She did not know forgotten enemies had started searching.
She did not know the dreams she could never remember belonged to another lifetime.
She only dreamed of moonlight falling across an endless lake.
And a man whose face she could never quite see.
Back on the balcony, Vaelor opened his hand.
A small silver pendant rested in his palm.
Old.
Worn.
Broken.
He had carried it for so long that no one alive knew it existed.
His thumb brushed its cracked surface.
For the first time in centuries...
It was warm.
The Alpha King closed his fingers around it.
Somewhere beyond the horizon...
Something that should have remained buried had awakened.
And this time...
Even the King Who Could Not Die was not certain what would happen next.
