Summary

Everyone remembers Emily Carter. Except the one person who should remember her most. Returning to Ashbrook after years away, an unnamed narrator discovers a photograph of herself with a girl she doesn't recognize. The town insists they were inseparable. Her father refuses to talk about the past. And hidden inside the attic is a confidential police file that was never meant to be found. As forgotten memories begin to surface, so do pieces of a case that was supposedly closed years ago—a missing child, a corrupted body-camera recording, evidence that has mysteriously disappeared, and an entire chapter removed from the recovered manuscript. But the deeper she digs, the more impossible the truth becomes. Because someone didn't just hide the past. They altered it.
