Prologue
PROLOGUE
ANDREA DRAKE
Some secrets were never meant to stay buried.
Mine had a name.
Austin Kidd.
Everyone knew Hunter Drake.
Everyone knew The Kidd’s.
What no one knew...
was us.
I grew up in the small town of Richmond, Mississippi.
Tight-knit community.
Everyone knew everyone.
Which meant secrets rarely stayed secrets for long.
I have a twin brother.
Hunter.
He’s my only sibling, and we’ve always been close.
Growing up, we covered for each other more times than I could count.
Our parents decided on no more of us, due to how much of a handful twins are.
Hunter was always getting into something.
Being a boy, he usually came home with a cut, scrape, bruise, or occasionally a broken bone.
I'd cover for him.
He'd cover for me.
Siblings have to have each others backs.
My brother can sing.
And not just a little.
The guy could walk into a room, open his mouth, and make everyone stop what they were doing.
Mom and Dad were country singers. But ended up quitting when Mom got pregnant.
My brother's group of friends are now big time Rock Stars.
They worked hard for that.
Growing up Hunter, Colt, and Trey were always together.
I'd tag along.
Hunter and I were a year younger than Trey and Colt. They didn’t meet Austin until we were almost fifteen.
Austin Kidd.
Son of rock legend Shaun Kidd.
He showed up in our little town with an ego that barely fit through the front door.
Honestly...
It fit him.
The boy was a musical genius.
Hand him a guitar, piano, drums... it didn’t matter. He could play just about anything. Writing lyrics, building melodies, producing music—it all came as naturally to him as breathing.
I used to pretend I wasn’t paying attention.
Truth was, I could’ve sat there for hours watching him create.
Don’t get me wrong.
Austin was cocky.
But...
He’d earned it.
Austin moved in with his grandmother across the road from us when we were fifteen.
The day they pulled into the driveway, Hunter, Colt, and Trey were outside playing basketball.
By the end of the afternoon, they’d found their fourth band member...
and my brother had found his best friend.
Austin wasn’t alone.
He had his little sister, Chloe.
She’d already been through more than most people experience in a lifetime.
Trey never had it easy.
Even after the band took off, he almost stayed behind.
Rachel made sure he chased his dream anyway.
She loved him enough to push him toward his dream, even when it meant letting him go.
Sometimes I still wonder if Trey ever truly came back from losing her.
Before long, the four of them were chasing the same dream.
Record deal at nineteen.
Tour by twenty.
Funny enough...
I never wanted this life.
I wanted to be a nurse.
Somehow I ended up managing one of the biggest rock bands in the country instead.
It wasn’t exactly the plan.
They kept going through assistants and never seemed to trust anyone who came in.
Eventually they decided I was the safest choice.
The first time I officially met Austin Kidd...
We couldn’t stand each other.
At least...
that’s what I kept telling myself.
Follow me back to the beginning.
