PROLOGUE đź’Ś
The last time he kissed me, it was careless.
Soft. Certain.
Like tomorrow was promised.
He said he’d call when he got home.
He never did.
At first, I waited.
Then I worried.
Then I learned the quiet, brutal truth—
Some people don’t leave loudly.
They vanish.
I found out I was pregnant on a Tuesday afternoon, sitting alone in a sterile hospital room with white walls and no future plans left intact.
I didn’t cry when the doctor spoke.
I didn’t cry when I walked out alone.
I cried that night when my mother held my face and whispered my name like it was a prayer.
“Seraphina,” she said softly. “We’ll get through this.”
My father didn’t speak to me for weeks.
When he finally did, his voice was heavy with disappointment and love in equal measure.
“You’ll stay,” he said. “The child will never lack anything.”
And so I stayed.
Five years passed.
I built a life around my daughter — Nolani.
My Nola.
She has his eyes.
The same quiet intensity.
The same way of observing the world like it might betray her.
I never tell her about the man who disappeared.
Because children shouldn’t grow up waiting for someone who chose absence.
I thought I had buried him.
Until the day my family summoned me home…
And I walked into a room filled with power, legacy—
And him.
Older. Colder. Unmistakable.
My father’s voice cut through the silence.
“Our families have waited long enough,” he said.
“It’s time the betrothal is fulfilled.”
The word echoed in my chest.
Betrothed.
I looked at the man who once loved me without knowing who I was—
And realized fate hadn’t lost us.
It had only waited.

Good beginning. I like the tragic backstory. I hope the next chapters will be a little bit longer. I will be tuning in for more. 👍
