THE TANGLE
Autumn morning came slowly to the city.
A fine rain turned the asphalt into a mirror, catching the gray facades of the buildings and the occasional gleam of passing headlights. People hurried to work with their faces hidden beneath umbrellas. To them, it was an ordinary day.
To Klaus Weber, it was ordinary too.
The publishing house occupied the sixth floor of an old brick building. Once, the city’s largest newspaper had been printed there. Now half the rooms belonged to online publications and independent journalists.
Klaus entered his office, tossed his rain-soaked coat over the back of his chair, and set a cup of coffee beside the monitor.
A small package was already waiting on his desk.
No return address.
Only his name.
Klaus Weber. Personal.
He frowned and automatically checked the wrapping for postal marks.
Nothing unusual. An ordinary parcel.
He slit the paper open with a utility knife.
Inside were two things.
An envelope.
And a small black flash drive.
Klaus opened the letter.
He knew the handwriting. Knew it so well that his heart missed a beat.
It belonged to Martin Keller.
His friend. A journalist. A man who had officially been declared dead three months ago.
Klaus lowered himself slowly into his chair. His hands had suddenly grown heavy.
He began to read.
“Klaus,
“If you are holding this letter, then everything happened exactly as I expected.
“The official account of my death will be convincing. Perhaps it has already been broadcast on every channel. Perhaps you even attended my funeral.
“Do not believe a word of it.
“I came too close to the truth.
“I was no longer investigating corruption. It turned out to be something far worse.
“If you decide to continue, trust no one. Not the police. Not the intelligence services. Not politicians. Perhaps not even your own colleagues.
“On the drive, you will find everything I managed to collect.
“If, after seeing it, you decide to destroy it, I will understand.
“If you continue the investigation... there will be no turning back.
“Martin.”
Klaus sat motionless for a long time.
Someone laughed in the newsroom. Phones rang beyond the glass partition. Life went on.
Only his world had ceased to be the same.
He picked up the flash drive and rolled it between his fingers. An ordinary plastic shell. So ordinary it was hard to believe it might contain the reason a man had died.
Or the reason someone had wanted Martin to disappear.
Klaus raised his eyes to the rain beyond the window.
One thought echoed through his mind.
What the hell did you get yourself into, Martin?
