The Letter

The Bet of Two Worlds

Chapter One: The Letter

The first whisper came on a Tuesday afternoon as Amina Yusuf was leaving school. The hallway was nearly empty, with only a few students lingering near the front gates while sunset painted streaks of gold and orange across the walls. Her backpack rested on one shoulder, swaying lightly with each step, and the sound of her shoes tapping against the tiled floor echoed softly in the silence.

It should have felt normal.

Instead, something about the stillness unsettled her.

The school was never this quiet. Even after classes ended, there was always noise somewhere—students laughing outside, teachers talking in nearby classrooms, chairs scraping against floors. But today, the silence felt heavy, almost unnatural.

She had nearly reached the staircase when a voice spoke behind her.

“Don’t turn around.”

Amina froze.

The words were quiet, barely louder than a whisper, but they sent a sharp chill racing down her spine. Her breath caught in her throat as every muscle in her body locked in place. The voice had sounded close. Too close.

For one terrifying second, she couldn’t move.

Slowly, she turned.

The hallway was empty.

No students. No teachers. No movement. Just rows of lockers glowing under fading sunlight and silence stretching endlessly in both directions.

Amina stared.

Nothing.

Her heartbeat pounded painfully in her chest as she scanned the corridor once more. Still nothing.

No one.

She swallowed hard and tightened her grip on her bag strap. Finals were coming, sleep had become optional, and stress could do strange things to people. That had to be it. Her mind was exhausted.

By the time she reached home, she had almost convinced herself she imagined the whole thing.

Almost.

That night, rain tapped softly against her bedroom window while the rest of the house sat in complete silence. Amina sat at her desk with a math book open in front of her, though her eyes had been fixed on the same problem for nearly fifteen minutes. The numbers blurred together as her thoughts drifted back to the hallway.

The room felt wrong.

Too quiet.

Too still.

Then came a sound.

Tap.

Amina’s head snapped toward the door.

She stared.

Nothing.

Silence.

Then—

Tap.

This time there was no mistaking it.

The sound had come from her bedroom door.

Her pulse quickened as she slowly pushed back her chair and stood. Every step toward the door felt heavier than the last. She reached for the handle, hesitated for half a second, then pulled the door open.

The hallway outside was empty.

But something sat on the floor.

A black envelope.

Her name was written across the front in silver ink.

Amina Yusuf.

A cold shiver ran through her as she bent down and picked it up. The paper felt unnaturally cold against her fingers, almost frozen. Slowly, she opened it and pulled out a single card.

Silver words gleamed against the black paper.

The bet has begun.

Seven players.Two worlds.One truth.

Find the murderer before midnight on the seventh day.

Or everyone loses.

Amina read the words once.

Then twice.

Then a third time.

Her mouth felt dry. “What kind of joke is this?”

No one answered.

The air in her room seemed to shift, growing colder with each passing second. She stared at the card, waiting for something to make sense, but instead something far worse happened.

New words began appearing at the bottom.

Slowly.

As if invisible ink were coming alive.

We are watching.

The lights went out.

Darkness swallowed the room so quickly it felt violent. Amina gasped and stumbled backward, the card slipping from her hand onto the floor. Her breathing became shallow as she stood frozen in complete darkness.

Then she heard it.

Breathing.

Not hers.

Someone else’s.

Inside her room.

Very close.

Right behind her.

Amina spun around so fast she nearly fell, her hands blindly reaching through darkness. “Who’s there?”

Silence.

Then the lights are back.

Her room was empty.

No one stood behind her. Nothing looked disturbed. The card lay on the floor exactly where it had fallen.

But Amina knew what she heard.

Someone had been there.

She barely slept that night.

The next morning, exhaustion weighed heavily on her as she walked into school. The familiar noise of students filled the building again—conversations, laughter, complaints about homework—but somehow it all felt wrong now. Artificial. Like everything around her was pretending to be normal.

Then she saw Layla.

Layla Hassan was moving through the hallway unusually fast, scanning faces with wide eyes until she spotted Amina.

“Amina!”

Something in her voice made Amina stop immediately.

Layla rushed toward her, looking pale.

Terrified.

Amina knew before either of them spoke.

“You got one too.”

Layla froze.

Her expression shifted from panic to shock. “How do you know?

Amina lowered her voice. Black envelope?”

Layla’s face lost what little color it had left.

“Oh my God.”

Neither of them spoke for a moment.

So it wasn’t just her.

Before Amina could say anything else, another voice interrupted.

“You both got letters too?”

They turned.

Zayn Malik stood nearby with his hands in his pockets, his expression unreadable as always. He was known for being quiet, observant, and impossible to read. Even now, he looked calm.

Too calm.

Layla stared at him. “You too?”

He nodded once.

Amina narrowed her eyes. “You don’t seem scared.”

Zayn met her gaze without flinching. “Should I be?”

Layla blinked. “That is a crazy response.”

Before he could answer, shouting erupted near the staircase.

Students began gathering around something pinned to the wall. Amina, Layla, and Zayn exchanged quick looks before moving toward the crowd.

A black envelope.

Larger than the others.

Pinned to the wall in full view.

Silver letters glimmered across the front.

ALL SEVEN HAVE BEEN CHOSEN.

A murmur spread through the crowd.

Then more words appeared.

Slowly.

As if written by an invisible hand.

COME TO THE LIBRARY AT MIDNIGHT.

The lights above them flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then every light in the hallway shut off.

Screams erupted instantly as darkness swallowed everything.

Amina’s heart slammed against her ribs.

Then she heard the whisper again.

Closer than ever.

Right beside her ear.

“Run.”

The lights came back.

People were panicking now, looking around in confusion.

Amina’s breathing quickened.

This wasn’t a prank.

Something was very, very wrong.

And somewhere in the chaos, she noticed Zayn standing completely still.

Watching.

Like he already knew what was coming.
