It was immense—impossibly, magnificently immense—its trunk so wide that ten people could have linked hands around it with room to spare. Its bark was silver-gray and deeply furrowed, carved with centuries of wind and salt and the slow patience of time. But there was something wrong with it. The leaves that should have been a vibrant, shimmering green were instead a sickly yellow, curling at the edges as if the tree itself was slowly suffocating. Patches of black rot spread across the bark like bruises on ancient skin, and the branches sagged under the weight of their own decay.
