A lovely day
The sound of laughter echoed through the small neighborhood park.
"Itsuki! Hurry up!"
A cheerful blond-haired boy waved both hands excitedly from the top of the slide.
"I'm coming!" a small black-haired boy answered, his tiny legs running as fast as they could.
Daniel Reed laughed as Itsuki Aoyama tripped over a small rock before landing face-first on the grass.
"Ouch..."
Instead of laughing, Daniel quickly climbed down and brushed the dirt from Itsuki's clothes.
"See? I told you not to run too fast."
Itsuki pouted, rubbing his sore nose.
"But... you were leaving me behind."
Daniel smiled gently.
"I'll never leave you behind."
Those simple words became the promise that shaped their childhood.
Years passed, yet nothing seemed to change between them.
Daniel's family welcomed Itsuki as if he were another son.
Every weekend, Mrs. Reed prepared an extra plate at dinner without needing to ask.
"Daniel, call Itsuki! Dinner's ready!"
Daniel would run upstairs before shouting through the open window.
"Itsuki! Mom made your favorite!"
Itsuki's face would brighten instantly.
Meanwhile...
His own house was silent.
Too silent.
The moment he stepped through the front door, the smell of alcohol filled the air.
"You came home late."
His father's cold voice froze him in place.
"I-I was studying..."
A slap.
Itsuki fell onto the wooden floor before he could finish speaking.
His cheek burned.
"You always have excuses."
His father grabbed him by the collar and threw him against the wall.
"You're just like your useless mother."
Itsuki bit his lip to stop himself from crying.
Crying only made things worse.
Late that night...
A gentle knock came from his bedroom window.
Itsuki slowly opened it.
Daniel stood outside with a flashlight in one hand and a small paper bag in the other.
"I brought dinner."
Itsuki forced a smile.
"You'll get in trouble."
Daniel climbed through the window anyway.
"Worth it."
He carefully placed an ice pack against the bruise on Itsuki's cheek.
"Does it hurt?"
Itsuki nodded.
Daniel frowned.
"I wish I could take your pain away."
Itsuki looked down.
"It's okay."
"No."
Daniel's voice was unusually firm.
"It's not okay."
Silence filled the room.
Then Daniel reached into his pocket.
"I made something."
It was a friendship bracelet.
Blue and white threads woven together.
"I made one for me too."
He tied it around Itsuki's wrist before showing the matching bracelet on his own hand.
"Now we're connected."
Itsuki smiled for what felt like the first time that day.
"Promise?"
Daniel held out his pinky.
"Promise."
Their little fingers hooked together beneath the moonlight.
"No matter what happens..."
"We'll always stay together."
For years...
That promise never broke.
When Itsuki's mother finally left after years of abuse, she couldn't take him with her.
She cried as she hugged him one last time.
"I'm sorry..."
"I'm so sorry..."
Then she disappeared from his life.
Itsuki didn't cry.
He simply stood there, watching her leave.
He already knew...
Adults couldn't always keep their promises.
Days later, Daniel's parents made a decision.
"You'll stay with us from now on."
Mrs. Reed embraced the trembling boy.
"You don't have to be alone anymore."
Itsuki buried his face against her shoulder.
For the first time...
He finally understood what a family felt like.
The years passed quickly.
The two boys grew taller, their childish laughter slowly giving way to quiet conversations and shared dreams.
Daniel discovered music.
It started with an old acoustic guitar his grandfather had given him.
At first, he could barely play a single chord.
His fingers hurt.
The strings buzzed.
But he never gave up.
Every afternoon, music drifted from the Reed family's backyard.
Itsuki would sit beneath the tree, quietly reading a book while listening to Daniel practice.
Whenever Daniel mastered a new song, he would run over excitedly.
"What do you think?"
Itsuki smiled.
"You'll become an amazing musician one day."
Daniel scratched the back of his head.
"You really think so?"
"I know so."
Daniel laughed.
"Then... when I stand on a big stage someday..."
He looked directly at Itsuki.
"...I'll dedicate my first song to you."
Itsuki laughed softly.
"I'll be in the front row ~."
"It's a promise."
Another promise.
Neither of them knew...
Some promises were destined to~ become nothing more than echoes.
The seasons changed, but one thing remained the same.
Itsuki and Daniel were inseparable.
By the time they entered high school, everyone knew where one of them was, the other wouldn't be far behind.
"Those two are practically glued together."
"I've never seen them apart."
"They're like brothers."
Daniel would simply laugh at the comments, while Itsuki smiled awkwardly.
Only they knew...
What they felt for each other was far more than friendship.
One autumn afternoon, Daniel sat beneath the large maple tree behind the school, gently strumming his guitar.
The soft melody danced through the crisp air.
Itsuki closed the novel he had been reading and rested his chin on his knees, listening quietly.
"You've gotten better."
Daniel looked up with a grin.
"You think so?"
"I know so."
Daniel chuckled.
"I've been practicing almost every day."
"I can tell."
The music was beautiful.
Every note carried warmth, as if Daniel was pouring his heart into the strings.
When the song ended, silence settled between them.
Itsuki clapped softly.
"Encore."
Daniel laughed.
"There's no audience."
"There is."
Itsuki pointed at himself.
"I'm your audience."
Daniel stared at him for a moment before smiling.
"You're always my favorite one."
Itsuki felt his ears grow warm.
He quickly looked away.
Weeks later...
The school announced its annual cultural festival.
One of the teachers approached Daniel after class.
"Daniel."
"Yes, sir?"
"We heard you're quite talented."
Daniel scratched his head shyly.
"I guess..."
"Would you like to perform during the festival?"
His eyes widened.
"Really?"
The teacher smiled.
"We'd love to have you."
Daniel immediately accepted.
When he told Itsuki after school, he could barely contain his excitement.
"I actually get to perform!"
Itsuki smiled just as brightly.
"I knew this day would come."
"You'll come, right?"
Itsuki pretended to think.
"Hmm..."
Daniel pouted.
"Itsuki."
"I'm kidding."
Itsuki laughed softly.
"I wouldn't miss it for the world."
The day of the festival arrived.
The auditorium buzzed with excitement.
Students filled every seat.
When Daniel stepped onto the stage carrying his guitar, his hands trembled.
He searched the audience.
Then he found him.
Itsuki.
Sitting in the very front row.
The moment their eyes met...
Daniel smiled.
His nervousness disappeared.
He adjusted the microphone before speaking.
"This song..."
He paused.
"...is for someone very important to me."
Itsuki's heart skipped a beat.
The lights dimmed.
The first chord echoed through the hall.
It was gentle.
Warm.
Beautiful.
Daniel wasn't just playing music.
He was telling a story.
A story only one person in that room truly understood.
When the performance ended, the auditorium erupted into applause.
Cheers echoed from every corner.
Daniel had never looked happier.
As soon as he stepped backstage, Itsuki ran toward him.
"You were incredible!"
Daniel laughed breathlessly.
"Really?"
"You were amazing."
Without thinking...
Itsuki threw his arms around him.
Daniel froze.
For a brief moment, the world around them disappeared.
Neither of them noticed the surprised looks from nearby classmates.
Daniel slowly wrapped his arms around Itsuki, returning the embrace.
"I'm glad..."
His voice was barely above a whisper.
"...because I was only looking at you."
Itsuki's heartbeat became impossible to ignore.
He stepped back, flustered.
"You... idiot."
Daniel laughed.
"So that's your compliment?"
Itsuki covered his burning face.
"Just... shut up."
That evening, the two walked home together beneath the golden sunset.
The streets were quiet.
Leaves drifted across the pavement.
Daniel suddenly stopped walking.
"Itsuki."
"Hm?"
"If..."
He tightened his grip on his guitar case.
"...if I become a famous musician someday..."
Itsuki looked at him curiously.
"...will you still stay by my side?"
Itsuki smiled without hesitation.
"Of course."
Daniel let out a relieved laugh.
"Good."
"Because..."
He looked directly into Itsuki's eyes.
"I don't think I could enjoy music if you weren't there to listen."
Itsuki felt his heart race.
He didn't know how to respond.
Instead...
He gently reached for Daniel's hand.
Their fingers intertwined naturally.
Neither of them let go.
As they continued walking beneath the setting sun, neither realized they had already crossed the invisible line between friendship and love.
The melody that had once been just a dream was slowly becoming the soundtrack of their lives.
And neither of them knew...
That every beautiful song has a final note.
