Chapter 1
The Girl on the Swing
"Every forever begins with one small promise."
The evening sky stretched across Moonlight Park like a painting, brushed with shades of orange, pink, and gold. The gentle breeze carried the scent of blooming flowers as the old swings creaked softly beneath the ancient oak tree.
Children laughed in the distance, chasing one another across the playground while parents sat on nearby benches, talking quietly as the sun slowly dipped toward the horizon.
But one little girl sat alone.
Her name was Zara.
She swung her legs gently, her eyes fixed on the ground beneath her feet. Every few seconds, she traced invisible circles in the sand with the toe of her white shoe.
She wasn't waiting for the sunset.
She was waiting for someone.
Someone who had promised to come.
Minutes passed.
Then more.
One by one, families began leaving the park, and the laughter around her grew quieter.
Zara sighed and hugged the small notebook resting on her lap. Inside it were childish drawings of castles, flowers, clouds, and places she dreamed of visiting one day.
"If I ever have a best friend," she whispered to herself, "I'll tell them all my dreams."
A tiny tear slipped down her cheek before she quickly wiped it away.
She didn't want anyone to see her cry.
Just then, footsteps echoed along the path.
A little girl, about the same age, slowly approached. She held a worn teddy bear close to her chest, and one of its ears had been stitched back on with blue thread. Her dress was neat, but her eyes carried a sadness that no child should have.
She stopped a few steps away from the swing.
Neither girl spoke.
For a long moment, they simply looked at each other.
Finally, Zara gave a shy smile.
"Do you want to sit with me?"
The other girl glanced around as if making sure the question was really meant for her.
"Me?"
Zara nodded.
"There isn't anyone else here."
The little girl smiled for the first time that day.
"My name is Noelle."
"I'm Zara."
Noelle carefully climbed onto the swing beside her. The two swings moved gently together in the evening breeze, squeaking in the same quiet rhythm.
"It's a pretty teddy bear," Zara said.
Noelle looked down at it.
"My mummy gave him to me."
"He looks like he's been on lots of adventures."
"He has, "Noelle giggled softly.
The sound surprised even her.
For the next few minutes, they talked about little things.
Favourite colours.
Favourite foods.
Their favourite games.
The flowers they liked.
The clouds that looked like animals.
It felt strangely easy.
Like they had known each other much longer than a few minutes.
When the sun disappeared behind the trees, the park lights flickered on one by one.
"My grandma says the first star appears when someone makes a wish," Zara said, pointing toward the darkening sky.
Noelle looked up.
"What would you wish for?"
Zara thought for a moment.
"A forever friend."
Noelle smiled.
"I think... I'd wish for the same thing."
The two girls looked at each other.
and smiling.
The was silence for a few minutes.
then Zara said to Noelle,
let's make a promise...
A Promise to be Forever Best Friends,
and never be separated.
Noelle looked up at Zara and smiled.
"I was just about to say the same thing."
then Zara smiled.
They had thought of the same promise at the very same moment.
It soon became their favorite place—
a place filled with beautiful memories and many more yet to come.
In the distance, Noelle spotted her mother walking toward the playground.
but Zara said Goodbye to Noelle...
before her Mom could reach
Before leaving, Zara turned back with a bright smile.
and said...
"This our secret spot, let's meet here again"
then she ran off smiling and happy.
Noelle couldn't wait for her Mom to reach to tell her the Great News.
Neither Zara nor Noelle knew it then, but the promise they had made beneath the evening sky would one day become the very thing that kept them alive.
Years later...
Their friendship would be tested by heartbreak, betrayal, dangerous secrets, impossible choices, and promises that would demand everything they had to keep.
But on that quiet evening in Moonlight Park...
They were simply two lonely little girls who had finally found someone who understood
