The alarm buzzed at 7:00, slicing through the quiet hum of the house. She groaned, pulling the blanket tighter around her, wishing for five more minutes. Downstairs, she could already hear her mother clattering pans, her father’s voice low as he read the morning paper.
College had changed her routine, but home still felt the same — warm, ordinary, safe. Except for the secret she carried.
She dressed quickly, slipping into jeans and a soft sweater, brushing her hair until it fell neatly over her shoulders. At breakfast, her brother teased her about being late again.
Her mother fussed over whether she was eating enough, and her father gave her that look — the one that said he knew she was hiding something.
But none of them knew. None of them could because when she stepped outside, the world shifted he was waiting.
Leaning against the car parked just beyond the gate, his eyes locked on hers the moment she appeared. Her pulse jumped, her breath caught. He shouldn’t be here. Not this close to her family.
