Chapter 1 : The Thorned Rose

Night gradually descended over the Imperial Palace of Eldrath, cloaking its ivory towers in a veil of silent cold.

Inside the grand banquet hall, thousands of crystal candles cast a warm golden glow across the polished marble floor. The gentle melody of the royal orchestra intertwined with the laughter of nobles and the delicate clinking of wine glasses.

Upon the magnificent golden throne sat the most revered woman in the Empire of Eldrath.

Reila Anastasya Eldrath. The Empress of Eldrath.

A dark emerald gown elegantly embraced her figure, while the Empress's crown shimmered atop her long black hair. Her emerald eyes swept calmly across the grand hall with the composed gaze of a woman who had stood beside the throne for five years.

Beautiful, graceful, and untouchable.

That was how the people knew her.

Yet tonight, for the first time, Reila felt like a stranger upon her own throne.

Everything around her was magnificent and flawless, yet to Reila, it all felt painfully empty.

The gazes of the nobles had changed.

They still bowed respectfully.

They still addressed her as Your Majesty.

They still smiled with perfect courtesy.

But beneath those polished smiles lurked quiet whispers that spread like poison.

And the source of those whispers stood only a short distance from the royal throne.

Dahlia De Veynrith.

A deep crimson gown hugged the tall woman's elegant figure flawlessly. Her rose-red hair cascaded softly over her porcelain-white shoulders, while her sharp dark eyes calmly surveyed the ballroom.

The Princess of Veynrith.

The Empire's former enemy.

And the woman the King had brought home from the battlefield.

It had been three months since her arrival.

Only three months.

Yet it had been enough to slowly shake Reila's place beside the throne.

Dahlia stepped forward before offering a graceful curtsy before the royal couple.

"It is an honor to stand before the Sun and Moon of the Empire of Eldrath."

Her voice was soft.

Beautiful.

Almost flawless.

The nobles smiled in admiration.

Reila remained silent.

Their eyes met, and in that instant Reila saw something hidden behind Dahlia's gentle smile.

A challenge.

Subtle.

Silent.

But unmistakably real.

Before the atmosphere could grow awkward, Rael rose from his throne.

"Tonight," the Emperor of Eldrath declared, his calm voice echoing throughout the grand hall, "we celebrate our victory and a new beginning for our Empire."

Thunderous applause filled the ballroom.

Rael descended from the throne with measured steps, his black-and-gold royal cloak sweeping across the marble floor.

"Let this be a night free from hostility."

The orchestra shifted into a livelier melody.

The celebration officially began.

Reila tried to ignore the growing discomfort tightening inside her chest.

Until Rael walked past her without so much as a glance.

His steps stopped directly before Dahlia.

The ballroom fell into complete silence.

Then Rael extended his hand.

"Would you honor me with this dance, Princess of Veynrith?"

Whispers instantly erupted throughout the hall.

Reila felt the air leave her lungs.

The first dance was meant for the Empress.

It had always belonged to her.

Yet tonight, Rael offered it to another woman.

In front of the entire Empire.

What hurt even more was the gentle smile Dahlia wore as she accepted the King's hand.

The waltz began.

Rael guided Dahlia to the center of the ballroom. Her crimson gown spun beautifully beneath the candlelight while the Emperor of Eldrath rested his hand comfortably upon her waist.

Every noble watched.

"How pitiful... the Empress."

"His Majesty has gone too far this time..."

The whispers grew louder.

Yet Reila remained seated upon her throne.

No anger.

No tears.

Only a faint smile she forced herself to maintain.

Because an Empress must never shatter before her people.

Slowly, Reila rose from her throne.

No one stopped her as she walked gracefully toward the exit alone.

For if she allowed even the smallest crack to show, the entire Empire would know that her heart had just been humiliated before them all.

Just before reaching the great doors, Reila stopped.

She turned around one last time.

Across the dance floor, Rael's blue eyes met hers.

He saw her.

He knew she was hurting.

For one fleeting moment, Reila waited.

She waited for Rael to release Dahlia's hand.

She waited for her husband to call her name.

But Rael never moved.

His hand remained upon another woman's waist.

Then, without hesitation, the King of Eldrath resumed the dance as though Reila's departure meant nothing at all.

At that very moment...

Reila's world collapsed without making a sound.

Flashback

Winter was nearing its end when the King of Eldrath departed the capital to conquer Veynrith.

That day, the sky was blanketed with heavy gray clouds hanging low above the palace towers. Across the royal courtyard, rows of knights stood ready in gleaming silver armor as Eldrath's golden banners fluttered proudly in the cold wind.

Reila still remembered the way Rael held her hand before mounting his warhorse.

"I'll return soon," he whispered softly.

A faint smile crossed his lips before he gently kissed her forehead.

Slowly, their intertwined hands slipped apart.

At first...

Everything seemed easy.

Letters from the battlefield arrived every week.

Some contained reports of small victories.

Others were nothing more than simple complaints about the bitter cold beyond Veynrith's borders.

But every single letter ended with the same sentence.

I miss you.

Like a woman deeply in love, Reila believed every word.

She answered every letter without delay.

No matter how busy she became governing the Empire, she always found time to sit beside her bedroom window each evening, writing long letters about the palace, the rose garden beginning to bloom, and countless little stories that might have seemed insignificant to a King.

But gradually...

Rael's replies began to change.

The letters arrived less frequently.

Their contents grew shorter.

Until, during the final four months before Eldrath's victory was announced...

No more replies came.

Yet Reila continued writing.

Perhaps because she feared that if she stopped, their relationship would truly become something unfamiliar.

While Rael remained at war, every responsibility of the Empire rested upon her shoulders.

She attended meetings with the nobles.

Handled the affairs of the northern territories.

Ensured food supplies remained stable throughout the harsh winter.

Even comforted the families of knights who had yet to return from the battlefield.

And throughout all of it...

Two people never left her side.

Irene.

And Lucy.

Irene had served Reila since long before she became Empress, back when she still lived in House Ravenscroft. The brown-haired woman spoke little, yet she always knew exactly what Reila needed before the Empress herself could say it.

Lucy, however, was different.

She was far too brilliant to be called merely a personal assistant.

Years ago, they had been rivals at the Royal Academy.

Both stubborn.

Both unwilling to lose.

Somehow, that rivalry had blossomed into a friendship that endured to this day.

"Your Majesty seems to be smiling since this morning."

Lucy's cheerful voice echoed through the royal study as she entered carrying a stack of documents. Her short black hair framed her face neatly while her amber eyes regarded Reila with an amused smile.

Reila looked up from the letter she had been reading.

"I am simply in a good mood."

"Naturally," Lucy replied while placing the documents upon the desk. "His Majesty is finally returning. I'd almost forgotten what Your Majesty looks like when you aren't thinking about work."

Nearby, Irene quietly hid a smile while pouring tea beside the window.

Reila sighed.

"Lucy."

"Did I say something wrong?" Lucy asked innocently. "If I remember correctly, someone inspected the banquet decorations three separate times this morning."

"Because I don't want anything to go wrong."

"Of course," Lucy answered immediately. "It certainly has nothing to do with the fact that Your Majesty misses her husband far too much."

"Lucy."

This time even Irene let out a quiet laugh before quickly lowering her head when Reila looked toward them.

"I'm beginning to regret making you my personal assistant."

"Unfortunately," Lucy replied casually, "it's far too late for regrets. Besides, everyone in the palace knows Your Majesty has been waiting for the King's return like a young woman hopelessly in love."

A faint blush colored Reila's cheeks.

Strangely enough, after months of carrying every burden alone, a conversation as simple as this made her heart feel lighter.

Lucy studied her friend for a moment before her teasing smile softened.

"Your Majesty has worked far too hard this past year," she said gently. "Now that the war is over... you can finally rest."

Reila lowered her gaze to the victory report in her hands.

Rael was coming home.

That single thought alone made every hardship feel worthwhile.

The night before the victory celebration, she could hardly sleep.

Irene caught her standing before the mirror several times, carefully choosing which jewelry to wear the following day.

"Your Majesty," Irene sighed while brushing Reila's long black hair, "you've changed your earrings three times already."

"I simply want to look my best."

"In my opinion," Lucy remarked lazily from the sofa while reading official reports, "His Majesty would still fall in love with you even if you greeted him wearing your nightdress."

"Lucy!"

"I'm serious."

Reila turned away, trying to hide the smile tugging at her lips.

It had been so long since she had felt this happy.

But the following day...

Every hope she carried collapsed in an instant.

The King's victorious return was welcomed by the cheers of countless citizens filling the palace grounds.

Rows of knights marched proudly through the main gate while the bells of victory rang from every tower.

Reila stood atop the palace staircase wearing a white-and-gold gown, the Empress's crown resting upon her head.

A gentle smile illuminated her face as the royal carriage finally came to a stop.

The carriage door opened.

Rael stepped out first, greeted by thunderous cheers from every corner of Eldrath.

He looked stronger than he had a year ago.

His black military cloak fluttered softly in the spring breeze.

For a brief moment...

Reila wanted nothing more than to run into his arms.

But her steps froze.

Another hand reached out from inside the carriage.

Silence fell across the palace courtyard.

Whispers spread among the crowd.

A woman slowly stepped down beside the King.

Her skin was as pale as porcelain.

Her rose-red hair flowed to her waist.

Her sharp black eyes calmly observed the Imperial Palace without a trace of fear.

Rael was still holding her hand.

Beside Reila, Lucy's smile slowly disappeared.

Meanwhile, Irene visibly stiffened.

None of them spoke.

✧༺♥༻✧

"She is merely a prisoner of war."

That was what Rael told her that very night.

Reila remembered those words perfectly.

After the welcoming banquet ended and the nobles gradually departed, Rael finally came to see her on the balcony outside her private chamber. The cool night breeze stirred his black cloak while pale moonlight traced the sharp lines of his handsome face.

"Her name is Dahlia De Veynrith," Rael said calmly, as though discussing something utterly insignificant. "She is the princess who surrendered at the end of the war. Bringing her to Eldrath is far safer than leaving her behind in Veynrith."

Reila listened in silence.

"I know what the nobles are thinking," he continued. "But you have nothing to worry about. She is only a prisoner of war."

At last, his ocean-blue eyes settled upon her.

Rael pulled Reila into a warm embrace, whispering sweet words and speaking of how deeply he had missed her.

"Trust me... I love you."

And, as always, Reila chose to believe him.

Perhaps because she loved Rael too much.

Or perhaps because, after waiting an entire year for his return, she could not bear to ruin it with an argument.

So she ignored the whispers of the nobles.

She continued fulfilling her duties as Empress flawlessly.

The victory banquet was prepared on a magnificent scale under her personal supervision.

The grand hall was adorned with thousands of fresh flowers.

The finest musicians in the capital were invited to perform.

Even the seating arrangement of every noble was personally inspected by Reila to ensure there was not the slightest mistake.

Lucy repeatedly urged her to rest.

"Your Majesty, the banquet won't collapse simply because you stop working for one hour."

But Reila merely smiled and continued reviewing the guest list in her hands.

"I want everything to be perfect."

And perfect it truly was.

On the night of the celebration, the Grand Hall of Eldrath looked like something out of a fairy tale.

Crystal candlelight shimmered across the marble floor.

The orchestra filled the air with elegant music.

The nobles praised their Empress for organizing such a magnificent celebration in so little time.

Yet no one knew how exhausted Reila truly was.

No one saw the sleepless nights she endured.

No one knew that even the gown she wore that evening had been chosen because it was Rael's favorite color.

And the cruelest part of all...

At the very banquet she had prepared with all her heart to celebrate her husband's victory...

Rael gave his first dance to another woman.

Not to his Empress.

Not to the woman who had ruled in his absence.

But to Dahlia De Veynrith.

A prisoner of war, he had called her.

Yet the way he looked at Dahlia told an entirely different story.

The way his hand lingered just a little too long upon her waist.

The way his voice softened whenever he spoke to her.

The way he continued dancing even after watching Reila walk away.

It was too gentle to be mere sympathy.

Too intimate to be simple duty.

And in that moment...

Reila realized something far more terrifying.

Perhaps...

The war had never truly ended.
