Chapter 1

Subtitle: Finding beauty in two different worlds.

Strolling hand in hand along their familiar path, the two of them looked up to behold a sky utterly beyond description.

Across the sweeping, sunset-gradient ribbons of the horizon, sudden leaps of colour broke through at random intervals. Glinting points of light lay scattered about like stray stars, or perhaps like tiny, porcelain-white petals adrift in the ether.

Crimson blended into orange, amber melted into violet, and those peculiar leaps of colour layered over one another, stretching on and on into the infinite distance—it was a celestial canvas unlike any they had ever seen.

Asa gazed up into the heavens, her eyes softening as she drank in the hues. "What a wondrous, mysterious sky," she murmured. "Yet, how beautiful it is."

"Yes, it is exquisite," Yu replied.

Before Yu’s eyes, however, stretched a sky lined with an endless, elegant progression of prime numbers. He found a profound grace in that unfolding sequence. For Yu was a soul who perceived every phenomenon in the universe through the language of mathematics.

"Your dress looks lovely today," Yu said, turning his gaze to Asa.

To his eyes, the large, repeating floral patterns of the knit cardigan draped over her shoulders appeared as a beautifully woven equation.

"Thank you, I am quite fond of it too. The lacework flowers are so bright and airy, don't you think?" Asa smiled warmly.

Though they gazed at the very same world, they did not perceive it in the same way.

And yet, their hearts met in the same sense of wonder.

Clasping hands tenderly, the two walked on, sharing the same rhythm as they made their way home together.

(The End)

[Afterword]

The "Prime Number Sky" in this story was born from a simple question: "How would the world look to someone whose mind is completely attuned to mathematics?"

When writing this story, I asked an AI for inspiration and received a wonderful image: "a sky where irregular points of light, sunset-like colour bands, and ripple-like interference patterns overlap." From that hint, I expanded the vision into a fantastical scene shared by Yu, a man who sees numbers in everything, and Asa, a woman who simply appreciates the beauty right before her eyes.

Even when looking at the same thing, how we feel can be completely different. I hope this short story about two people connected by the shared feeling of "beauty" leaves a warm and gentle aftertaste in your heart. Thank you for reading!

The final image is an illustration recreated by AI, depicting the "a sky where irregular points of light, sunset-like colour bands, and ripple-like interference patterns overlap" that couldn't be used for the cover. I hope you enjoy it!
