Chapter 1: Echoes in the Dark
The neon hum of the archive flickered against the reinforced steel walls, casting cold blue shadows across the floor. Dante Vance stood before the neural-stream display, his dark eyes locked on the fading telemetry data of his brother's consciousness.
Julian’s file wasn’t just closing; it was unraveling. In Dante's world, where information and human memory were commodities traded by the syndicate, a standard murder was rare. Julian had not merely been shot—his neural signature had been targeted, systematically wiped from the core database. Piece by piece, the history of his life was being deleted from existence
Boss, Lorenzo’s voice cut through the low hum of the servers as he stepped into the vault, a prisoner in tow. "We secured her from the lower district, right before the memory-scrubbers could get to her apartment."
Dante turned slowly. The fury in his chest was cold, absolute, and suffocating. He had sworn to tear apart anyone responsible for Julian's death. He stepped out of the shadows, towering over the small, trembling figure pushed forward by his capo.
Elena stood wrapped in a deep green velvet coat, her dark hair falling in soft waves around her shoulders. Her face was pale, and her eyes were wide with a raw, shattered panic. But beneath the terror, as she lifted her chin to meet his lethal gaze, there was a quiet resilience that refused to break.
"Where is he? Elena's voice trembled, fighting to stay steady. "They told me Julian was in the hospital, but your men—they dragged me here. What is happening?
Julian is gone, Dante said, his voice a low, gravelly rasp that echoed off the cold steel walls. He closed the distance between them, stopping inches away, smelling the faint scent of rain and sweet jasmine. "And you were the only one standing next to him when his neural imprint was erased. Tell me why I shouldn't let my syndicate pull the secrets right out of your head and leave you empty."
Elena gasped, taking a half-step back until Lorenzo’s hand blocked her exit. "Erased? No—I loved him! I don't know anything about a code, I swear to God!"
Everyone lies to survive," Dante hissed, reaching out to grip her chin, forcing her face up so he could search her eyes for any trace of deception. The skin of her face was warm beneath his calloused fingers, her pulse hammering wildly against his thumb.
Instead of shrinking away, Elena reached up with surprising strength and slapped his hand down, her chest heaving with indignation.
Then do it!" she cried, tears spilling over her lashes as grief finally broke through her shock. "Scan me, wipe me, kill me! I watched the man I loved lose his mind before he even drew his last breath, and you think I helped them? Look around you! The monsters who did this aren't standing in front of you—they're wearing your pins! They're inside your own empire!"
The room fell dead silent.
Dante froze. Inside his own empire. It wasn't just a desperate plea; it was a tactical confirmation of the internal betrayal he had been suspecting for weeks.
As he stared down at her, the intense, dangerous anger inside him shifted into something far more volatile. He realized then that Elena wasn't an enemy. She was the only thing left connecting him to his brother—and the primary target of the very traitors trying to overthrow him.
He gripped the edge of the console, his knuckles turning white. Vengeance had been his only purpose, but looking at her, Dante knew the rules had changed. He wasn't just going to hunt down the traitors. He was going to burn down the entire world to keep her alive.
