Chapter 1 — Scars That Don’t Heal.
The alarm didn’t ring.
It hadn’t been needed for years.
Adrian Kane was already awake, sitting on the edge of the bed with his eyes lost in the void. The room was small, cold, lit only by a faint blue light coming through the window. On the nightstand, a photo: him and a smiling child, with a small tube running across the boy’s nose Leo.
Adrian ran a hand along his neck. Right there, where years earlier a forbidden punch had changed his life. A thin scar, deep enough to remind him every day of who he had been… and what he had lost.
A cough echoed from the hallway.
Weak.
Broken.
Adrian stood up immediately.
“Leo…” he murmured, opening the door.
The boy was awake, sitting on his bed—pale, but with bright eyes.
“Dad… did you sleep?”
Adrian smiled. A tired smile, but a real one.
“A little. How do you feel?”
Leo shrugged. “Same as always.”
“Same as always” — two words heavier than any punch.
Adrian adjusted his blanket, then looked at the calendar hanging on the wall.
A date circled in red.
The appointment — the one that would decide everything.
And the money… wasn’t enough.Leo stared at him.
“Dad… are you working today?”
Adrian hesitated.
“I’m looking for something.”
It wasn’t true.
He had lost his job weeks ago.
No one wanted to hire a former boxer with a scar on his neck and a sick child to take care of.Leo lowered his gaze. “I’m sorry…”
Adrian took his hand.
“Hey. You never have to be sorry. Ever.”
The boy nodded softly.Adrian stood up, walked to the wardrobe, and opened it slowly.
At the bottom, hidden under old clothes, there was a black duffel bag.
He pulled it out.
Opened it.
The gloves were still there.
Worn.
Dirty.
Almost alive.Adrian stared at them.
His hands trembled.
“Dad… are you going back to fighting?” Leo asked in a small voice.
Adrian closed his eyes.
Inhaled.
And for the first time in years, he told the truth:
“If it’s the only way to save you… yes.”Leo didn’t say anything.
He just looked at him, with those big eyes that seemed to understand more than they should.
Adrian stood up, grabbed the bag, and closed it.
The weight pulled on his shoulder, as if the past had fallen on him all at once.
“I’ll be back soon,” he said, trying to smile.
“Promise?” Leo asked.
Adrian stopped at the door.
The promise burned in his throat.
But he made it anyway.
“Promise.”He stepped outside.
The morning air was cold, sharp.
Every step seemed to drag him back in time, to when the ring was all he had.
To when a single punch had destroyed everything. He reached the old gym.
The door was the same.
The faded sign.
The smell of sweat and leather hit his memory like a punch to the stomach.
Adrian placed his hand on the handle.
Inhaled.
“For you, Leo,” he whispered.
And opened the door.
