Chapter 1: Two friends, Two hearts

In the quiet farming village of Iseagbe, the crowing of roosters was louder than alarm clocks, and everyone believed that hard work was the only road to success. Before sunrise, farmers could already be seen carrying hoes across their shoulders while women prepared baskets filled with fresh vegetables for the market.

Among the villagers lived two inseparable friends—Peter and Samson.

They were known throughout the village as "the twins who weren't twins." Although they looked nothing alike, they were always together. If someone saw Peter, they knew Samson couldn't be far away.

Both young men came from poor families.

Peter lived with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Adenuga, in a small mud house with a leaking roof. Whenever it rained, the family didn't pray for blessings first—they prayed that the roof wouldn't collapse.

"One day," Peter would always say with a smile, "I'll buy Mama a house so big that rain will need permission before entering."

His mother would laugh.

"My son, first buy yourself a pair of shoes without holes."

Even Peter laughed because she was right.

Despite their poverty, Peter and Samson never stole from anyone. They believed that honest work, no matter how difficult, was better than easy money earned through dishonesty.

Every morning they worked on different farms, clearing weeds, planting crops, and harvesting yams under the hot African sun.

Sometimes they returned home so tired that even lifting a spoon to eat felt like another day's work.

One afternoon, while resting beneath a giant mango tree, Samson stretched his legs and sighed.

"Peter," he said, "if poverty were a person, I would challenge it to a wrestling match."

Peter burst into laughter.

"And who do you think would win?"

Samson scratched his head.

"Poverty... because I don't even have enough food to build muscles."

The two friends laughed so hard that birds flew out of the tree above them.

Although they were poor, they were rich in friendship.

They shared everything—even dreams.

Peter dreamed of becoming wealthy enough to marry the woman he loved.

Her name was Margaret.

Margaret was beautiful, elegant, and came from one of the richest families in Iseagbe. She had never known hunger or hardship.

Unfortunately, wealth had made her proud.

She believed expensive clothes made people important and often looked down on those who couldn't afford them.

Samson's girlfriend, Shannia, was completely different.

She came from a poor family but possessed something money could never buy—a kind heart.

She treated everyone with respect, whether rich or poor.

Whenever villagers compared the two women, they always said,

> "Beauty attracts the eyes, but character captures the heart."

Peter never paid attention to those words.

To him, Margaret was perfect.

Little did he know that love without respect can become the greatest pain of all.

Half-Claimed

Bargara4670: Half-Claimed was easy to read with a well-thought-out plot that kept me interested throughout. Many of these revenge stories seem to have the abused heroine turning into a vicious harpy who I end up disliking as much as her abusers. I like to feel empathy with the main characters, and I found that I...
