Summary

In a world secretly governed by Project Janus—a massive behavioral empire designed to engineer human compliance—litigator Evelyn Mercer, operative Grant, hacker Harper, and the algorithm's tormented architect, August Brooks, wage a high-stakes war to dismantle the system. Racing against corrupt government forces led by General Richard Vance, the group uncovers a hidden liberation loop left behind by pioneer Clara Vance. Chapter 1: The Invitation to Nowhere

The ink was barely dry, the wax seal still warm.

August Brooks sat in the silence of his private study, the air smelling faintly of ozone and old parchment. Before him sat seven heavy, cream-colored envelopes. Each was addressed by hand, the calligraphy precise, cold, and utterly devoid of mercy.

He didn’t use a courier service. He didn’t use the post. He used the systems of the world to do his bidding—a network of compromised accounts and untraceable digital couriers that ensured his summons would reach their destinations like clockwork.

He picked up the first envelope, the weight of it anchoring his hand. Evelyn Mercer.

He remembered her, even if she had spent the last decade working tirelessly to ensure the world—and her own conscience—forgot him. He tucked the card inside, sealed it with the crest of a lighthouse—the symbol of Echo Ridge Isle—and placed it into the secure dispatch bin.

One by one, he processed the others.

Nora Hayes. The doctor who played God and lost.

Harper Quinn. The shutterbug who traded truth for blackmail.

Alistair Croft. The man who thought he was the ultimate observer, unaware that he was being observed just as closely.

Grant Kael. The soldier who traded his honor for a heartbeat.

Desmond Cole. The ink-stained wretch who sold his integrity for a handful of chips.

August pushed the final envelope into the slot. The dispatch mechanism hummed, a small, pneumatic hiss signaling that the “invitations” had entered the stream.

They were already dead men and women walking; they just hadn’t received the mail yet.

“The tide is turning,” August murmured to the empty room. He walked to the wall of glass that overlooked the dark, churning Pacific. Somewhere out there, the world was spinning on, oblivious to the fact that seven lives were about to be pulled into the gravity well of Echo Ridge Isle.

He didn’t want their money. He didn’t want their influence. He wanted their truth.

He touched a small, remote trigger on his desk. Far away, in the heart of a city, a courier’s bag vibrated as a signal was sent. The journey had begun. The invitation to their own destruction was officially in transit.

Fated to My Ex- Best Friend

MaybeInACentury: This is probably the best book I've ever read in a really really long time. I couldn't stop once I started. Golden find. Though I do wish the story was written in present tense rather than in past tense, or had an epilogue about what is happening now, it is a masterpiece.
