Chapter 1: Duty, Scales, and Iron
The heavy iron gates of the Citadel of Fromali groaned on their hinges, parting just enough to let the chill mountain wind—and Kilo Rider—through.
Kilo pulled his high-collared military coat tighter around his neck, the stiff fabric pressing against the faint, iridescent silver scales that dusted his jawline and throat. As a half-snake kin, the damp, biting cold was more than just uncomfortable; it chilled his blood to a sluggish crawl. But Kilo didn't slow his step. He couldn't afford to.
He carried a single leather duffel over his shoulder and a transfer parchment tightly folded in his coat pocket. Today marked his official transfer to the Guard Corps of the Fromali Duchy—a prestigious, high-paying assignment, and precisely two weeks before the grand ascension of the territory’s heir.
Passing through the inner courtyard, Kilo felt the prickle of eyes on him. Vampire guards in polished silver armor peered down from the battlements, their pale faces framed by sharp features and dark hooded cloaks. Beneath his gloves, Kilo tucked his hands into fists. Centuries may have passed since the bloody blood-and-scale wars between the Snake Kin and the Vampire Lords, but the ancient enmity still hung thick in the air like old smoke. A half-blood soldier standing on vampire soil was an anomaly, if not a outright provocation.
Kilo paid them no mind. He walked with a rigid, perfectly straight posture—by-the-book, unyielding, and stoic. In his twenty-five years, no one had ever seen Kilo Rider crack a smile. Life hadn't given him much to smile about, and duty left no room for softness.
"Name and business," a sergeant demanded, stepping out from the barracks guardpost. The vampire's eyes flickered down to the subtle snake scales trailing up Kilo's neck, a flash of instinctual distrust crossing his pale face.
"Corporal Kilo Rider. Reassigned from the Southern Marches," Kilo replied, his voice deadpan and steady. He handed over his transfer orders without a flicker of emotion. "Reporting for duty."
The sergeant snatched the paper, reviewing the official seal. "Snake blood," the vampire muttered, more to himself than to Kilo. "You're a long way from the warm sands, Corporal. They transfer you here to sweep the courtyard?"
"They transferred me because my file reflects zero disciplinary marks and a hundred percent mission efficiency, sir," Kilo said, unwavering. "And the hazard pay in the central district is triple the southern border rate."
It was the absolute truth. Kilo wasn't here for glory, honor, or royal politics. Every coin he earned at this station was earmarked for one thing: sending medicine and supplies back home to his grandfather. His grandfather was the last family he had left—an ailing elder whose body was failing after decades of hard labor. Kilo would stand post in the frozen den of his ancient enemies for a hundred years if it meant keeping the old man warm and fed.
The sergeant sneered slightly, but the official mark on the parchment couldn't be denied. He stamped the ledger with a heavy thud. "Barracks four. Bunk twelve. Shift begins at dusk. Lord Ziny Fromali’s 125th birthday is in fourteen days, and the entire keep is on high alert. You keep your head down, do your rounds, and don't speak unless spoken to by noble blood."
"Understood, sir."
Kilo took back his papers, offered a crisp, flawless military salute, and turned toward the barracks.
As he walked across the cobblestones, an odd, sudden sensation washed over him—a sharp thrumming deep within his chest, like a quiet thread pulling tight against his heart. Kilo stopped in his tracks, his vertical-pupil eyes narrowing as he looked up toward the high spire of the main keep.
High above, standing on a private balcony overlooked by dark banners, a shadowy figure looked down into the courtyard.
Kilo couldn't see the man's face clearly from this distance, but he knew who resided in those quarters: Lord Ziny Fromali. The young Duke-to-be, reaching his 125th year—a milestone where, according to vampire lore, a lord must step into full rule as Prince, unless the ancient magic of the Bound Link revealed his true mate.
The strange ache in Kilo's chest tugged again, warmer this time, cutting right through the cold. Unsettled, Kilo broke his gaze, pulled his collar up to hide his scales, and marched into the barracks to prepare for his shift.
