Elias did not look up. Fingers rested on the cool metal lip of the console while the primary waveform found its centerline again. Margin note, handwritten because handwriting still forced attention: 14:07:19. Drift onset: 14:06:42. Forty-seven seconds of freefall before the system admitted what his nerves had already priced in.
p < 0.001 that the phase error originates in the primary coupling array rather than the secondary lattice.
Probability of sensor artifact: 0.012.
Probability the drift exceeds tolerance inside the next forty-seven minutes: 0.008.
He bumped gain three increments and waited. The numbers held. Around him the resonance chamber kept its low, even thrum—sixteen oscillators locked in a throat-narrow window through which Planet P’s morphic field could be measured without tearing the measurement open. Warm cabling. Chalk-dry bonecrete. He logged both scents, then discarded them. Neither crossed significance against seven years of baseline.
One additional flag, entered almost as superstition and then justified as thoroughness:
Window coherence: primary array reports simultaneous micro-variance on a secondary coupling band not scheduled for this shift. Interpret as crosstalk until proven otherwise.
He hated the word window. It implied something looking back.
Soft footfalls from the left aisle.
“Elias, the secondary array is reporting a 0.8-millisecond offset on the return pulse. Do you want me to—”
“Recalibrate the return transducer first.”
The sentence left his mouth before the colleague finished speaking.
The man—tall, silver-haired, glacial ice for eyes—closed his mouth on the unused half of the question. For 0.6 seconds there was only lattice hum and the click of a cooling relay in the secondary rack.
p = 0.003 that the offset is real.
p < 0.001 that I knew the wording before he formed it.
Probability this is the third instance in eleven shifts: 0.041.
Elias kept his gaze on the waveform. The colleague recovered the way people did when the alternative was admitting the room had skipped ahead of them.
“Understood. Transducer sweep now.”
Footfalls receded.
Elias ran the next scheduled measurement. Gravity vector on the left side of his body registered 0.4 seconds behind the right. He logged timestamp and lag. Diurnal noise could own a discrepancy that small. Routine still demanded ink. When he shifted weight to test, the left boot micro-stuttered; the body corrected before the error reached full consciousness. Separate line in the log:
Motor map desynchronization — 0.4 s lag — self-corrected in 180 ms.
Shift end: perimeter walk. Each oscillator housing checked by hand. Porcelain-pale skin on his forearms caught the low light and returned a faint inner luminosity that never quite agreed to be reflection. Long silver-white hair, unbound, moved against the coarse linen collar of his coat. No one on Planet P covered the head. The prohibition felt as correct as lattice frequency—until the last several weeks, when correctness itself had started requiring proof.
Outside, the settlement lay under perpetual high mist. Craggy rock rose like ruined spires against bruised indigo. The path to quarters was empty. Temperature delta, chamber to open air: 1.7 °C. Vibrational tug along the boot soles: up, slight, unwelcome. Both values entered the evening log before he crossed the threshold.
Quarters: narrow bed; polished metal surface that served as table and mirror; window of mist and the nearest spire’s black silhouette. He folded the weathered wool coat—gothic stitching along the cuffs, hems frayed by mist—and set it on the chair. Final self-assessment before the metal.
p = 0.017 that the left hand’s resting position matches the right.

He lay down without killing the lumen lamp. Sleep arrived in stages the non-sleeping part of him still annotated. Alpha. Theta. The moment the lattice hum usually faded—he marked it—and the fact that tonight it did not fade completely.
The dream began as pressure.
Not the ordinary drop of deeper sleep. Lateral compression: air acquiring mass, pressing in from every vector at once. Data first, always:
Vibrational amplitude +14% above baseline. Carrier centered ~47 Hz.
The lattice hum returned louder, filling the skull bones from the inside.
A figure stood at the foot of the bed.
Humanoid outline—tall, slender, bone-sheen, unbound ash-silver like the settlement mean—yet the proportions were wrong by a fractional degree the engine could not price without a new baseline. Limb-to-torso ratio off local mean by an amount too small to assign without cheating. Eyes not ice or silver but a deeper non-reflective violet that drank lumen light and gave nothing back. No colonial cut of clothing. Air around the form warped in concentric interference rings, expanding and contracting on the 47-hertz carrier now owning his auditory field.
Elias tried to sit up. The motion failed to complete. His body stayed supine while a secondary, slightly offset version of the same motion ran in parallel. Two versions of the arm occupied one space for 0.8 seconds before the offset collapsed. Both sets of muscles fired—identical commands to slightly different spatial targets. Left deltoid took the order twice: on time, and delayed by the same 0.4 seconds that had haunted the gravity vector on shift.
The figure spoke. Voice arrived half a second before the lips moved.
“Don’t wake up yet.”
No emotional valence the filter could tag. Simply present, sharing bandwidth with the hum.
“You’re on Planet P.”
Interference brightened. For one measured interval the outline doubled—one instance at the bed foot, one sliding through the wall and gone. The remaining raised a hand. Blue energy, thin as filament, touched the center of Elias’s chest.
No pain. Instead: perfect statistical certainty that the sensation did not originate in the body on the bed. Cool spread from sternum outward, as if intercostals were answering a different respiratory cycle. For 1.2 seconds the heartbeat fell out of phase with itself—two rhythms in one thorax—before realignment. The left ribcage registered the second pulse as foreign. The engine flagged it at p < 0.001, then the rhythms snapped.
Last log before the dream dissolved:
p < 0.001 that the warning is external.
p = undefined that the body receiving it is singular.
The hum faded. Pressure released. Sleep—or something statistically indistinguishable—resumed.
Somewhere under the mist, far from the chamber’s clean thrum, other instruments would soon claim the same second for different reasons. Elias did not know that. He only knew the window note still sat in the margin of a shift log, ink already dry, waiting to become more than crosstalk.
