Summary

I'M A SURVIVOR - BOOK DESCRIPTION Life didn't give him a roadmap. It gave him obstacles, heartbreak, and a world that expected him to fail. But he didn't. I'm a Survivor is a raw, unfiltered journey through the kind of childhood people don't talk about out loud - the kind shaped by empty refrigerators, long nights, broken trust, and the constant fight to stay afloat. Growing up in a neighborhood where trouble waited on every corner, survival wasn't a choice. It was a daily decision. Told with honesty, grit, and the voice of someone who lived every page, this story follows a boy who learned early that nobody was coming to save him. He faced the streets, the silence, the losses, and the moments that could've broken him - but didn't. Instead, they forged him. This isn't a story about perfection. It's a story about endurance. About standing back up when life knocks you down. About finding strength in the places that tried to take it from you. I'm a Survivor is for anyone who's ever been counted out, overlooked, underestimated - and kept going anyway. Because surviving isn't luck. It's earned.

CHAPTER ONE — THE FIRST LESSON

CHAPTER ONE — THE FIRST LESSON

I learned my first lesson about survival before I even knew the word for it.

The house was small, but the noise inside it was loud. Too loud. Yelling had a way of shaking the walls, like the whole place was built out of anger instead of wood. I remember sitting on the edge of my bed, staring at the floor, trying to breathe slow so my chest wouldn’t feel like it was caving in. Kids shouldn’t have to think about things like that, but some of us grow up faster than we’re supposed to.

Outside, the streetlights buzzed. Cars rolled by with music thumping through the doors. Somewhere down the block, someone was arguing again. It was normal. Normal enough that I didn’t flinch anymore.

I kept a small backpack under my bed — not because I planned on running away, but because I needed to know I could. A couple shirts, a pair of socks, a flashlight that barely worked. It wasn’t much, but it made me feel like I had a choice. When you grow up in chaos, even the illusion of control feels like power.

That night, I heard a crash in the kitchen. Glass breaking. A voice I didn’t want to hear. I closed my eyes and counted to ten, the way I taught myself. One breath for every number. One breath to remind myself I was still here.

I didn’t cry. I didn’t shake. I just sat there, listening, waiting for the storm to pass.

Because that’s what survival looked like back then — staying quiet, staying small, staying out of the way.

But even then, something in me refused to break.

A spark. A stubbornness. A voice that whispered, Not you. Not today.

I didn’t know it yet, but that was the beginning.

The first moment I realized I wasn’t just living through things —

I was surviving them.

And one day, I’d walk out of that house for good.

MaybeInACentury: This is probably the best book I've ever read in a really really long time. I couldn't stop once I started. Golden find. Though I do wish the story was written in present tense rather than in past tense, or had an epilogue about what is happening now, it is a masterpiece.
