Summary

Four years ago, Ángela lost more than her twin brother in a tragic accident that changed everything. Ever since, guilt has followed her like a shadow, turning birthdays into funerals and dreams into impossible luxuries. When her final chance to earn a scholarship collides with the return of old wounds, Ángela finds herself trapped between two very different boys: Javier, who offers her the future she never believed she deserved, and Adrián, the one person who refuses to let her go. But some secrets refuse to stay buried. Some loves are built on broken promises. And some rivers carry away far less than people believe. In a story about guilt, forgiveness, first love, and healing, What the River Never Took explores the invisible weight we carry... and what it truly takes to let it go.

Chapter 1

Chapter 1: 6 Months Earlier

Adrian had Angela pinned against the wall. His body was pressed completely against hers, one leg hooked between hers, his hands firm on her waist to cut off any chance of escape. But she didn’t want to run. His kisses were so passionate they left her weak, stripping away even the strength to open her eyes. She was lost in the rush of her own moans, which grew shamelessly louder as he kissed her left earlobe.

Adrian loved having control over her, having her at his mercy to do as he pleased. His mouth slowly trailed down to her neck. Angela reached for his lips, but he caught her face with one hand, forcing her to look away so he could keep taking his time, licking a slow path across her shoulder.

Angela’s heart was hammering against her ribs. She felt a desperate urge to touch him, to kiss him back, but this was how the game was played with him. It was as if Adrian were starving and she were his prey. Maybe because he’d always seen her as weak, or maybe because she’d let him do whatever he wanted for the past six months—the outcome was always the same: he possessed her, and he always won.

They collided again in a clash of tongues and desperate breaths. He sucked on her lips, and Angela responded with reckless passion, giving him everything she had in that moment. A part of her mind wanted to make him addicted to her, even though, in the end, she was the one who couldn’t walk away. She felt Adrian’s hand slide down her leg, slowly creeping up toward her inner thigh. Angela parted her legs for him, needing to feel him right there, where his touch had the power to make her shatter. He pushed her underwear aside, his fingers slowly slipping inside, knowing full well how desperate she was for him. It was sweet, agonizing torture.

To tell him to keep going, Angela arched her back slightly, letting his fingers finally reach her clitoris. Adrian pulled his lips away from hers. Fighting through the haze, she opened her eyes to look at him. He kept his gaze locked on hers, a seductive look in his eyes and a smirking grin that proved he knew just how wet she was. At first, she had resisted belonging to him, and now here she was, begging for his touch. He captured her lips again, rubbing her sweet spot. Angela groaned against his mouth, feeling like she was about to explode at any second under the steady rhythm of his touch. He commanded her with one hand between her legs and the other around her neck, covering her face in kisses.

“You like that?” he whispered against her ear, never slowing down. “Beg me for more.”

Angela could barely get a word out; the ache to have him inside her was unbearable. She chose not to speak. Instead, she reached down, trying to undo his belt to show him exactly what she needed right then and there.

“Not yet. I want to hear it. I want you to beg me.”

The words felt humiliating, but they only turned her on more. Angela dropped her hands the second she felt him stop. His fingers had stilled, robbing her of the feeling that drove her insane. It was his way of pulling her strings, forcing her to ask for it.

“Please...” she breathed out slowly, looking away from the embarrassment. “Please... I want...”

Right then, the echo of a door opening cut them off. They were in the boys’ locker room bathroom at Atlas International Academy, where they were seniors.

Even though they were hidden in one of the shower stalls, fear seized Angela, freezing her in place. She instantly recognized the voices of Mateo, Alonso, and Dante—Adrian’s best friends. They were talking about the swim meet scheduled for that night against Summit International Academy, their rival school.

Adrian clamped his free hand over her mouth and picked up the pace again. It was a dangerous game; she had to keep completely quiet. Tears pricked the corners of Angela’s eyes from the sheer pressure of the moment. He looked down at her with a smirk, fully aware of the mess he’d put her in. She didn’t try to pull away—she knew it was useless. Instead, she poured all her energy into holding back any sound that might give them away.

Just as she was hovering on the edge of an orgasm, Adrian stopped. He was playing with her, and he knew exactly what he was doing. Stopping at that crucial moment was no accident. He wanted to leave her hanging, making sure that next time, saying no to him would be even harder. He could be downright cruel when he wanted to be.

But this time, Angela wasn’t going to just sit back and take it. She wanted to give him a taste of his own medicine, to make him feel how agonizing it was to be left halfway there. She slid her hand down to his crotch; he was hard and heavy against his pants. Adrian was completely turned on—there was no denying that. She started stroking him up and down, looking up at him bashfully, trying to fake a confidence she didn’t actually feel. As much as she wanted to flip the script between them, there was always something inside her that made her crumble.

She watched him close his eyes, his mouth parting as he let out heavy, ragged breaths. Adrian threw his head back against the wall, eyes shut tight, his Adam’s apple prominent against his throat. Angela leaned in and began kissing his neck, feeling him shift into something wild and raw, but suddenly he pulled back completely. Every time she tried to take control, he broke it off. He stared down at her, breathing hard—at this point, hiding his heavy panting was nearly impossible.

“Who’s in there?” Mateo called out curiously from the other side.

Adrian had moved toward the stall door, leaving Angela frozen where she stood.

“It’s me,” Adrian called back, his voice steady. “Wait for me in the cafeteria. I’m just finishing up a shower, I’ll catch up with you guys.”

“Are you alone?” his friend chimed in. Low laughs echoed from the group, making it obvious they suspected otherwise.

“Of course I’m alone.”

Adrian moved quickly back to Angela, lifting her up effortlessly. She wrapped her legs around his waist, pulling their bodies even tighter together than before. He knew one of his friends might try to peek under the door to check if he was telling the truth.

“I’ll be out in a couple of minutes,” he cut in, closing the topic.

“Whatever you say, just don’t take forever. See ya, Adrian... and Lucia!” They let out a loud laugh and walked out.

It was clear they hadn’t bought his story for a second, using his official girlfriend’s name to tease him. As the heavy door slammed shut, Angela was left hanging in suspense, wondering what was going to happen next.

Adrian stared down at her. Unable to utter a word, she just waited for his next move. But instead of touching her again, he unlocked the stall door and walked out without a second glance, leaving her standing there alone and completely confused.

The echo of the main door closing confirmed he was gone.

Angela was trapped in the guys’ bathroom solely because he had dragged her in there. Now, the real issue was figuring out how to sneak out without getting caught. It was past 4:00 p.m. He had stayed behind for the swim team meeting, and she had stayed for the math competition practice. The campus was practically empty, which played in her favor to make a quiet exit.

She stepped out of the shower and fixed her uniform in front of the mirror. As usual, her reflection gave her back that same constant feeling of insecurity. She stared at her long hair, which she could never manage to style right, her pale skin, and the glasses that—while essential for her vision—had been the punchline of jokes for years. She sighed. No matter how hard she tried to convince herself otherwise, she always ended up picking herself apart.

She walked up to the exit and cracked the door open carefully, straining her ears for any noise in the hallway. Total silence. Gathering her courage, she poked her head out, checked that the coast was clear, and bolted. She hurried to her locker, grabbed her bag, and slipped out of the building, acting as if nothing had happened.

It was almost 11:00 p.m. by the time Angela finally got ready for bed. After leaving school, she had worked her part-time shift at the fast-food joint owned by good old “Uncle John,” and the exhaustion of the day was heavy in every muscle.

Still, memories of what happened in the bathroom flooded her mind, and it didn’t take long for the heat to return. Unable to stop herself, she felt an overwhelming urge to touch herself. She slid one hand up to her breasts and the other down to that sensitive spot between her legs—the one only Adrian knew how to touch. She began to squirm against the sheets, stifling her moans into her pillow.

She was so lost in the feeling that she didn’t even notice the moment Adrian stepped through her window. His presence beside the bed startled her completely. When she looked up, he was already standing there, staring down at her.

“Looks like it’s time to finish what we started.”

MaybeInACentury: This is probably the best book I've ever read in a really really long time. I couldn't stop once I started. Golden find. Though I do wish the story was written in present tense rather than in past tense, or had an epilogue about what is happening now, it is a masterpiece.
