Summary

On a university campus in Eldoret, a young woman appears to have everything together. She smiles for photos, attends classes, and blends into campus life, making others believe she is confident and happy. But behind that carefully maintained image lies a much more complicated reality. As the story unfolds, she faces emotional battles, personal expectations, relationships, and the pressure to live up to the version of herself that everyone else sees. Through moments of pain, growth, and self-discovery, she learns that true strength comes from accepting who she really is rather than pretending to be perfect. NAMBO explores themes of identity, mental and emotional resilience, friendship, family expectations, love, and the courage to be authentic in a world that often values appearances over truth.

Chapter 1:Put Together

Chapter One: Put Together

The campus in Eldoret always smelled like dust and rain.

She walked across the green field in her green tracksuit, books under her arm. The red-roofed buildings behind her, the blue umbrellas scattered like patches of sky on the ground.

"Hey! Smile!" her classmate called, phone up.

She did. Automatic. Teeth, eyes, everything in place.

That night, the photo went up with the caption: "Blessed and focused."

Comments flooded in. "Proud of you!" "Future doctor!" "Keep going, sis!"

She wore the yellow sweater that evening, too. Cold air, empty road, streetlight behind her. Another photo. Another smile.

From the outside, she was put together.

Inside was different.

At 2 am, she lay staring at the ceiling. The room was quiet except for the fan.

"Is this it?" she whispered to no one. "Class, exams, post, repeat?"

There was no crisis. No breakdown. Just a quiet emptiness, like a cup that looked full but was hollow.

She didn’t tell anyone. "Put together" girls don’t say they feel empty.

MaybeInACentury: This is probably the best book I've ever read in a really really long time. I couldn't stop once I started. Golden find. Though I do wish the story was written in present tense rather than in past tense, or had an epilogue about what is happening now, it is a masterpiece.
