Summary

John’s addictions were supposed to be a private problem — an embarrassing secret he could hide. But when a single heroic action draws the attention of the Lazarus factions, he becomes the centre of a conflict he never knew existed. The Defenders want to keep him safe. The Protectors want to kill him. The Apocolytes want to use him. As John’s biology shifts into something impossible, loyalties fracture and danger closes in. What he is becoming may be the key to the Lazarus… or the reason they tear each other apart.

Chapter 1

There I was, working the afternoon shift behind the bar at the local and in rocked this beautiful intense stranger. “Come with me if you want to live!” was the line she gave. Of course I laughed, well snorted if I am honest. This was a line straight out of a bad action movie.

Lucy sighed and glanced toward the door before looking back at me. Her eyes narrowed as she repeated the line, quieter this time. I still wasn’t convinced.

I viewed this attractive lady with scepticism and to be honest, I was questioning her sanity. I have had so many near misses in my life that the thought of someone actually trying to kill me feels ridiculous.

Who is this woman and what does she know of my life? Equally, who am I that someone would actually want me dead? My life is uneventful, shallow, lacking direction — according to my father.

Lucy insisted that my addictive personality was the problem. I was confused but also scared out of my mind. What if she’s right?

Sitting in the passenger seat of her car whilst she heads out of the city, the drone of the tyres the only thing breaking the long awkward silence, I didn’t understand what was happening. Her story, here to save my life, well stranger things have happened but not to me.

I have always had addictions. As a baby, I was addicted to Gripe Water but that passed suddenly. Apparently, one day I fell off the changing table and was knocked unconscious. For a tense hysterical moment my mum was convinced I was dead. I awoke and from that moment on, I didn’t like gripe water.

Why would I get in a car with a beautiful stranger? Well, she really is beautiful, but then my life is so boring, I needed something to change and maybe Lucy would be the thing to change it.

Desperate for some excitement, I followed her. Worst case, I get to spend some alone time in the presence of alovely lady. Sometimes we have to take wins where we can get them. More importantly, I am single and so why not.

MaybeInACentury: This is probably the best book I've ever read in a really really long time. I couldn't stop once I started. Golden find. Though I do wish the story was written in present tense rather than in past tense, or had an epilogue about what is happening now, it is a masterpiece.
