AMORI POV

"Are you ready for tonight?" Elise smiled at me with gleaming eyes. Gosh, I knew what that look meant.

I closed my locker as I shook my head at her. "It's not happening, Elise. I told you Zack and I broke up. Besides, my mother would never let me come over with boys involved."

She groaned, rolling her ocean-blue eyes at me. "Girl, your mother doesn't have to know there are boys involved, you fool."

Unlike Elise, I wasn't a rebel. Lying to my parents was just not in me.

We started walking towards the exit.

"I don't know, Elise."

"Please... I am literally begging you. What's the point of this if my best friend is not coming?" she said with a frown.

I sighed. Great, now the guilt-tripping.

She tucked a dark stray hair behind her ear and started giving me the cute puppy-dog eyes.

"Promise it's going to be a small thing! And you will not force me to take alcohol if I don't want to. Besides, I will refuse even if you give me those eyes."

She looked a little disappointed about the alcohol part but then squealed in excitement.

"I promise! Small thing, no alcohol! Oh, trust me, this is gonna be so much fun!"

I sighed again, knowing this was totally a bad idea.

"Yay," I said in a sarcastic, bored tone as we reached my car first.

"Do you want me to pick you up later?" she asked.

Elise knew my mother would probably use not wanting me to drive at night as an excuse to stop me from going to this sleepover.

I nodded.

"Yes. That would be a good idea. At least my mother will feel too bad to say no."

"Okay, I'll pick you up at seven!" she squealed again before bouncing off to her car.

On my way home, I couldn't help but think this was a bad idea in so many ways.

Zack was going to be there, and we were not speaking. Our breakup wasn't exactly pleasant, considering he had cheated on me for the third time this year.

I did not know why I always gave that asshole another chance.

He was the perfect cute, popular quarterback dream boyfriend.

Elise considered those red flags, but he was part of our friend group. Him and I were like magnets. We always ended up in a situation.

I got home and immediately called my mom.

She was a nurse, and tonight was her night shift.

I had to convince her or else Elise would be so disappointed.

I dialed her number, and it didn't take her long to answer.

"Hi, Mom," I said in the sweetest voice.

"Hello, sweetheart. How was school?" she asked.

At least she sounded happy. My odds were looking good.

I smiled.

"School was great, Mom. Uh... Elise is having a small group discussion sleepover for our end-of-term science project. May I please go, Mom?"

She paused for a minute.

"Amori, you know I don't like you driving at night. It's not safe, and your father will definitely not be pleased about this."

I rolled my eyes.

Dad was never around.

He was a private pilot. We rarely saw him, and I had a feeling they were having problems.

My mother just never talked about it. She preferred treating me like a child and acting like everything was normal.

"Don't worry, Mom. Elise said she would pick me up at seven. This is very important. I cannot afford to fail this project."

I hated lying, but if I didn't, this would break my best friend's heart.

I heard my mother sigh over the phone.

"Okay, but please text me or call me as soon as you get to her house. Oh, and I am definitely going to call Elise's mother as well."

"Thank you, Mom!"

I heard a lady call for my mom in the background.

"Okay, bye, sweetheart. I have to go now."

I grinned as I hung up the phone.

"Bye, Mom."

I immediately texted Elise.

Pick me up at seven! Mission successful.

Elise immediately texted back. I imagined her jumping around in excitement.

Will be there in a bit. Get ready and look sexy!

I rolled my eyes before replying.

😌 You bet.

My closet was full of decent clothes.

I was Catholic, and my family was in too deep when it came to our religion.

I used to be too, but once I hit puberty, I realized I wanted a little freedom.

I wanted to be a little normal.

It shocked me when I reached high school how easily I blended in with the cool kids.

Sometimes I thought it was maybe because of my looks and my family's status.

I took my mother's beauty and my father's beach-blonde hair.

My mother's curvy body and my father's height.

I was fairly tall, especially for a girl.

Many girls would easily get bullied for being what they called a "church girl," but as soon as I stepped into high school, a lot of boys were attracted to me, and I easily made friends.

But I wasn't stupid.

It was easy to tell now that some people pretended to like me.

I packed my little overnight bag quickly after my shower.

Time really moved quickly.

Elise had already texted,

Almost there!

I brushed my long, wavy blonde hair after blow-drying it and slipped into my red cotton long-sleeved short dress.

I wore my black high-heeled sandals before running out of my room as soon as I heard my best friend's car pulling up in the driveway.

"Now that's what I'm talking about!" Elise whistled dramatically as I got into the car.

She loved my outfit.

I giggled.

"Oh, stop!"

When we arrived at Elise's house, which was a beautiful mansion, my face dropped a little as I began to realize that this wasn't really a small thing as she had promised.

There was lots of alcohol in the living room.

I expected it to be me, Elise, Zack, and his best friend Trevor, but I should have known better.

Elise had invited one of her other close friends and distant cousin, Sarah .

Trevor had also invited his friend Roy, whom Zack wasn't really fond of because he was kind of like a nerd.

"Finally!" Sarah said excitedly as she walked towards us.

"I have been waiting forever in here. Not that I mind being surrounded by a bunch of testosterone," she said, eyeing the guys who were already getting wasted.

Elise smiled at Sarah.

"I leave you for two seconds and you already look tipsy as hell."

"Hi, Amori. Welcome to the party!" Sarah said, finally acknowledging my presence.

I followed them towards the couches.

"Didn't realize it was a party," I mumbled to myself as I felt Zack's gaze.

He was watching me with a longing look, which I chose to ignore.

I vowed I was never going to let him break my heart again.

"Now, now, ladies and gentlemen! It is time!" Trevor announced with a big smile.

"For everyone to get fucked up!" he said, holding a box of cards.

Elise rolled her eyes as she got comfortable on the couch next to me.

"Why do you always make us play the same damn thing every time?"

"For real. Doesn't anyone have something else we can play besides cards?" Sarah agreed.

Zack took a drink from his red cup before nodding.

"The girls are right, man. That shit is boring at this point."

Trevor looked annoyed as he threw himself onto the couch.

"Well then, why doesn't one of you suggest something interesting?"

I watched as everyone went quiet.

Zack looked at me.

"Amori, what would you like to play?"

I really didn't care what anyone played, even the cards.

"I don't mind playing cards."

This made Trevor smile.

"At least someone isn't a party pooper."

"I think I found something," Roy suddenly said while scrolling through his phone.

"Well?" Sarah asked excitedly.

Roy began reading the instructions.

"It's a version of the Ouija game called You Have Been Added."

Just hearing "Ouija" immediately put me off.

"I don't think we should be messing around with that type of stuff."

"Amori, relax, babes. It's just a game, and besides, it is online, which means some AI is behind it, or it's literally just automated responses." Elise nudged my arm playfully.

"Trust me, it's just a game. You all wanted to try something new. I say this is it. Roy, continue, please," Trevor said enthusiastically.

Roy nodded.

"So I am going to type in all your names. When I tap Go, the arrow will rotate and point at a name. It will immediately start typing a question that you must answer truthfully. If you do not answer truthfully, apparently..." He paused, looking amused before continuing. "...the game will spill the truth, and beware—you will face the consequences. Tap Yes if you would like to continue."

Elise looked at me.

"I am so in! Amori, please!" she begged.

I didn't like this, but it was as if everyone was looking at me, hoping I wouldn't ruin their fun night.

I sighed.

"Okay... okay. Let's do this."

One by one, everyone tapped YES.

Roy grinned as he pressed START.

For a second, nothing happened.

Trevor laughed. "See? Told you it was bullshit."

Then every phone in the room vibrated.

At the exact same time.

Bzzzz.

Bzzzz.

Bzzzz.

The laughter died instantly.

I frowned and picked up my phone from the coffee table.

"I didn't download anything," Sarah whispered.

"Neither did I," Zack muttered.

A loading bar flashed across every screen.

Installing...

"Wait..." Roy said, his smile fading. "I never pressed install."

The loading bar reached one hundred percent.

A black screen appeared.

White letters slowly faded into view.

WELCOME.

Another message appeared beneath it.

THE TRUTH HAS A PRICE.

DO YOU ACCEPT THE CONSEQUENCES?

Before anyone could react, the screen changed again.

Accepted.

"I didn't press anything," Elise whispered.

A cold chill ran down my spine.

Neither did I.
