Chapter 1
The bells tolled before dawn.
Their mournful echoes rolled through the marble halls of Castle Solis, carrying the same message they had delivered every year for the past twenty-two years.
Today was Princess Lyra’s Awakening Day.
Servants rushed through the corridors carrying silver trays, embroidered robes, and crystal lanterns. Nobles gathered beneath golden banners bearing the blazing phoenix of House Solis, whispering excitedly about which royal prince or princess would unveil a new gift before the kingdom.
No one whispered about Lyra.
They never did.
A maid tightened the laces of her ivory gown until Lyra could barely breathe.
“My lady... hold still.”
“I’m trying.”
The maid hesitated before lowering her voice.
“I’m sorry.”
Lyra met the young woman’s eyes through the mirror.
“For what?”
“For... today.”
Lyra smiled, though it didn’t reach her eyes.
“You didn’t curse me.”
The maid bit her lip and looked away.
No one had to explain.
Everyone knew what would happen.
Or rather...
What wouldn’t.
The Hall of Flames shimmered beneath thousands of enchanted crystals. Nobles filled the balconies in gowns stitched with living fire and cloaks embroidered with glowing runes. The air buzzed with excitement.
King Aldren sat upon the Sun Throne, his crown blazing with golden light.
Beside him sat Queen Elara, elegant and distant.
To them, Lyra wasn’t their daughter today.
She was an embarrassment waiting to happen.
One by one, members of the royal family stepped forward.
A prince ignited blue flames that danced like wolves.
Thunder erupted from another princess’s fingertips.
The crowd roared with applause.
Then—
“Princess Lyra of House Solis.”
Silence.
Hundreds of eyes followed her as she walked alone toward the ancient Awakening Stone resting at the center of the hall.
Its crystal surface glowed softly.
Her heartbeat thundered in her ears.
Please...
Just once.
Let something happen.
She placed both hands upon the stone.
Light burst outward.
Gasps echoed throughout the chamber.
Hope flickered inside her chest.
Then...
The light died.
Nothing.
Not a spark.
Not a whisper.
The crystal turned dull gray.
Someone laughed.
Another joined.
Soon the entire hall buzzed with cruel murmurs.
“Still nothing.”
“A useless princess.”
“The kingdom’s shame.”
King Aldren didn’t even bother hiding his disappointment.
“I expected no less.”
His words struck harder than any blade.
Queen Elara simply lowered her eyes.
As though looking at Lyra was too painful.
Lyra slowly removed her trembling hands from the stone.
She refused to cry.
Not here.
Not before them.
She turned to leave.
“Wait.”
The king’s voice stopped her cold.
“I have an announcement.”
The whispers faded instantly.
King Aldren rose from his throne.
“For twenty years, the Ash Empire has threatened our borders. Thousands have died preserving this kingdom.”
His gaze swept across the gathered nobles.
“Peace has finally been secured.”
Applause erupted.
The king raised one hand.
“There is only one condition.”
A servant approached carrying a scroll sealed in black wax.
King Aldren broke the seal.
“As agreed...”
He looked directly at Lyra.
“...Princess Lyra will marry King Kael Draven of the Ash Empire.”
The hall fell silent.
Every heartbeat seemed to stop.
Lyra stared at her father.
Surely...
She had misheard.
“My king...” a duke whispered.
“The Ash King?”
“The Butcher of Black Hollow?”
“The man who commands shadows?”
King Aldren’s voice remained cold.
“The wedding will take place in fourteen days.”
Fourteen days.
Fourteen days before she was handed to a man whose name mothers used to frighten children into obedience.
Lyra found her voice.
“Father...”
He didn’t answer.
“You cannot mean this.”
“I do.”
“I’ve never even met him.”
“You were not asked to.”
The words hit harder than the laughter moments earlier.
“I am your daughter.”
“No.”
His expression remained carved from stone.
“You are my duty.”
The chamber became impossibly quiet.
Lyra searched the faces around her.
Her mother looked away.
Her brothers avoided her eyes.
Not one person spoke in her defense.
She had stood in this palace her entire life.
Yet she had never felt so utterly alone.
With slow, careful movements, she removed the sapphire brooch pinned to her dress—the royal crest of House Solis.
She placed it gently on the polished floor before the throne.
“If that is all I am...”
Her voice trembled despite her efforts.
“...then I hope the peace you buy with my life is worth its price.”
Without waiting for permission, Lyra turned and walked toward the towering doors.
No one stopped her.
No one called her name.
As the doors closed behind her, the thunderous applause inside the hall resumed.
They were celebrating.
Celebrating the day their unwanted princess had finally become someone else’s burden.
Outside, rain began to fall.
Lyra walked through the palace gardens until the voices disappeared.
Only then did the tears come.
She sank beneath the ancient ash tree overlooking the cliffs, pressing a shaking hand against her mouth to silence her sobs.
“I wish...”
Her whisper vanished into the wind.
“I wish I had been born anyone else.”
The tree shuddered.
A single silver leaf drifted onto her lap.
Then another.
And another.
The air grew strangely still.
Deep beneath the earth...
Something ancient stirred.
Far beyond the borders of Solis, in the heart of the Ash Empire, King Kael Draven abruptly opened his eyes.
The black dragon sleeping beneath his mountain fortress let out a deafening roar for the first time in a thousand years.
And somewhere in the darkness, an unseen voice whispered—
“She has awakened.”
