Chapter 1: The Girl Who Vanished
The rain had been falling for hours.
Dark clouds covered the sky above Blackwood High as students rushed through the parking lot, trying to avoid getting soaked. The old brick building looked even darker than usual, its windows glowing faintly in the storm.
Ava Carter stood near the school entrance, adjusting the strap of her backpack.
The first day back after summer break was supposed to be exciting.
Instead, everyone looked nervous.
Groups of students whispered in hallways.
Teachers exchanged worried glances.
Even the usually cheerful atmosphere of Blackwood High felt strangely cold.
Ava frowned.
Something wasn't right.
As she stepped inside the building, she noticed a crowd gathered around the main notice board.
Curious, she moved closer.
The moment she saw the poster, her stomach dropped.
MISSING
A large photograph stared back at her.
Blonde hair.
Bright smile.
Blue eyes.
Lily Bennett.
Ava recognized her instantly.
Everyone did.
Lily had been one of the most popular students at Blackwood High.
She was beautiful, friendly, and impossible to ignore.
According to the poster, Lily had disappeared three weeks ago after the school's annual Fall Festival.
No one had seen her since.
"Still no news?"
Ava turned.
A girl standing beside her shook her head.
"No."
Ava looked back at the poster.
Three weeks.
How could someone simply disappear for three weeks?
"Police think she ran away."
The voice came from behind her.
A tall boy with messy dark hair stepped forward.
Noah Williams.
Ava's best friend.
"Do you believe that?" Ava asked.
Noah shrugged.
"Honestly? I don't know."
Something about his answer bothered her.
The poster didn't look like a runaway case.
It looked like a tragedy waiting to happen.
A teacher suddenly appeared and clapped her hands.
"Everyone, head to class."
Students slowly dispersed.
But Ava couldn't stop staring at Lily's photograph.
Something felt wrong.
Very wrong.
Lunch was even stranger.
The entire cafeteria buzzed with rumors.
"She ran away with someone."
"My cousin heard she was kidnapped."
"No, she was planning to leave town."
Every table had a different theory.
Ava sat quietly, listening.
Most of the stories sounded ridiculous.
Then she noticed someone sitting alone near the back window.
A girl with long brown hair.
Mia Anderson.
Lily's best friend.
She looked exhausted.
Dark circles surrounded her eyes.
Ava watched as Mia quickly wiped away tears.
Then she stood up and hurried out of the cafeteria.
Ava exchanged a glance with Noah.
"Did you see that?"
He nodded.
"Yeah."
"She knows something."
Noah sighed.
"Maybe."
But Ava wasn't convinced.
People didn't cry like that for no reason.
The final bell rang at three o'clock.
Students flooded the hallways.
Ava packed her books and headed toward the exit.
Outside, the rain had finally stopped.
The air felt cold and heavy.
As she crossed the courtyard, something white caught her attention.
A piece of paper lay beneath a bench.
Half-hidden by wet leaves.
She almost ignored it.
Almost.
For some reason, she picked it up.
The paper was old and damp.
The edges were torn.
At first, it looked like a random notebook page.
Then Ava noticed the handwriting.
A name was written at the top.
Lily Bennett
Ava's heart skipped a beat.
She quickly read the words underneath.
If anything happens to me, the truth is hidden where nobody looks.
Below the sentence was a symbol.
A small black circle with a line through it.
Nothing else.
No explanation.
No signature.
Just those words.
A cold chill ran down Ava's spine.
Slowly, she looked around the empty courtyard.
Nobody was there.
The wind moved through the trees.
The school building stood silently behind her.
Watching.
Waiting.
Ava folded the paper and slipped it into her pocket.
She didn't know what it meant.
But she knew one thing.
Lily Bennett hadn't simply vanished.
And somehow...
Ava had just become part of the mystery.
