Epilogue part two Volker
Silence drops over the sanctuary like a lead weight.
I don't think I have ever felt my pulse spike so violently in my entire existence—and I have stood face-to-face with sovereign gods.
Nyx blinks. Once. Twice. The entire front row sits entirely frozen, as if waiting for a spell core to detonate in the aisle.
And then, Anneliese bursts out into a fit of breathless, unrestrained laughter.
Nyx blinks again, her jaw slowly dropping.
Anneliese's shoulders shake as she laughs harder, clutching her side. “I'm kidding!”
Nyx stares at her, utter disbelief washing over her face. “You're kidding?”
“Yes!”
“Anne!”
Anneliese waves a gloved hand dismissively, wiping a stray tear from the corner of her eye. “I couldn't help it! The tension in this room was suffocating!”
“You almost gave me a cardiac arrest!” Nyx yells, though a nervous, hysterical smile is already breaking through her shock.
“I know!”
I stand beside Nyx, my hand still wrapped tightly around hers, caught in a precarious state somewhere between profound disbelief and absolute irritation. I stare at Anneliese with the intensity of a man contemplating an immediate execution order.
“You actually objected to my wedding as a joke?” I ask, my voice is dropping.
Anneliese dabs at her eyes, entirely unbothered by my glare. “I had to, Volker!”
“Why?”
“Because you are stealing her!”
I look at Nyx, whose shoulders are trembling with quiet amusement, then turn my head back to Anneliese. “I am not stealing anyone.”
“You absolutely are!”
“She is freely marrying me,” I point out, as if stating a basic law of physics.
“Exactly!” Anneliese narrows her eyes at me suspiciously, pointing an accusing finger in my direction. “Are you entirely certain he isn't going to lock you in some remote storm tower and keep you all to himself, Nyx?”
I raise an eyebrow. “Why on earth would I do that?”
“Because you're Volker.”
“That doesn't answer anything.”
“It answers everything!”
Beside me, Nyx breaks into full, bright laughter, the sound echoing clearly off the high stone arches.
I turn to look at her, exasperated. “Why are you laughing?”
“Because she's right,” Nyx gasps out, clutching my forearm for support.
A surge of deeply offended pride flares in my chest. “I am not going to lock you in a tower!”
Anneliese immediately spins back toward Nyx with a triumphant grin. “See? Notice how he didn't deny keeping you all to himself!”
I open my mouth to deliver a precise, ironclad counter-argument—and then promptly close it.
Nyx looks up at me, raising one dark eyebrow with an insufferably amused smirk. “Volker?”
“...That is not what I meant."
Anneliese smiles like a cat that just swallowed a canary. “Sure, Volker.”
I let out a heavy, suffering sigh.
Anneliese’s mischievous expression softens, her eyes turning warm as she looks at Nyx. “I'm happy for you. Truly.”
Nyx’s gaze softens instantly, her hand reaching out to squeeze her friend's fingers. “Thank you, Anne.”
Anneliese turns her gaze back to me, the playfulness in her eyes sharpening into a warning that would make lesser men flinch. “And as for you, Reinhardt...”
I raise an eyebrow. “Yes?”
“If you ever make her cry—”
“Anneliese,” I interrupt smoothly, a faint smirk touching my lips. “I survived a war. I am reasonably certain I can handle your threats.”
“I am just establishing boundaries!” she declares, before finally melting back into her seat with a fond, shaking head.
The elderly officiant clears his throat loudly. Again. He adjusts his heavy silk robes and looks at us with deep, ancient patience.
“May we please continue?” he asks mildly.
Nyx turns back toward the altar, her face radiant. “Yes. Please.”
Beside me, Niklas raises his right hand into the air. “No.”
I don't even look at him. “Niklas.”
He slowly lowers his hand, holding his palms up defensively. “I didn't even say anything!”
“I know you,” I state flatly. “And whatever you were preparing to say was guaranteed to prolong this chaos.”
A collective ripple of quiet laughter passes through the pews.
I glance down at Nyx. Her dark eyes meet mine, glowing with an unburdened, pure warmth I have never seen before.
For the first time in either of our lives, nothing feels complicated. There are no impending Council strikes, no hidden plots, no survival strategies, no crushing burdens of legacy.
Just us. Standing in the sunlight. Together.
The officiant smiles softly, settling his book over his hands, and finally resumes the ancient, sacred vows. This time, we both listen to every single word, the quiet solemnity of the moment settling over the sanctuary like a blanket of peace.
When he reaches the final declaration and turns to Nyx, asking her if she will take me as her husband, she doesn't hesitate for a single heartbeat.
“I do.”
Her voice is clear, steady, and absolute.
The officiant turns his gaze to me. The question barely leaves his lips before I offer my own answer:
“I do.”
Two simple words. But standing beside her, holding her hand, they are more than enough to rewrite my entire world.
The officiant beams, gesturing between us with open palms. “By the power vested in this sovereign hall... you may kiss the bride.”
I raise an eyebrow, a victorious smirk finally breaking through my composure. “Finally.”
Nyx lets out a breathless laugh, rolling her eyes. “Volker!”
“What?” I ask smoothly, stepping into her space.
“You've been waiting for that all morning.”
“Obviously.”
I don't give her a chance to offer another sharp retort. I lean down, my hand cupping the side of her face, and bring my lips to hers.
The second our lips meet, the solemn sanctuary completely erupts.
A deafening roar of applause, joyful cheers, and bright laughter bounces off the vaulted ceiling. Someone lets out a sharp, piercing whistle from the front row—an unsophisticated display that is unequivocally Niklas.
I ignore it all, lingering in the kiss for a long, golden second, pulling her flush against my chest until her hands rest warm against my lapels.
When I finally pull back slightly, Nyx is breathing softly, her face flushed, her dark eyes shining up at me with absolute devotion.
I look down into her eyes, my chest swelling with a feeling so vast and overwhelming that no tactical language could ever contain it.
“Wife,” I murmur, the word tasting sweeter than anything I have ever spoken.
A radiant smile spreads across her lips. “Husband.”
My smirk grows instantly.
Nyx shakes her head, her hand lightly tapping my chest, though her smile never fades. “Don't get used to the title, Reinhardt.”
I lean down, brushing my lips softly against her ear. “Too late, Mrs. Reinhardt.”
