English Amin Parker: The Way of the Dojo I traveled to Japan with one goal: to dedicate myself to the study of martial arts. What I found was far more than physical training. Every day challenged me to grow—not only as a martial artist, but as a person. From learning a new language and adapting to a different culture to enduring the discipline and expectations of dojo life, each experience shaped who I became. This is my story of leaving home, embracing the unknown, and discovering that the greatest lessons were never about winning fights. They were about humility, perseverance, respect, and the strength to keep moving forward when life became difficult. In these pages, I share my successes, my failures, the friendships I built, the obstacles I faced, and the unforgettable experiences that transformed my life. This is more than the story of my martial arts training in Japan. It is the story of my journey toward becoming a better man.

The Decision 決意

The Decision

In late March 2015 I left Indonesia for Okinawa. I was in my late twenties, already married to Nur Azizah Podungge, and living a settled life. Yet something in me had remained unfinished for years.

From childhood I had been drawn to martial arts. Bruce Lee was the first figure who made the idea of disciplined physical and mental training feel real to me. At the same time, Japanese language and culture had entered my life through Dragon Ball Z and Nintendo. Those early interests never left. As an adult they became a quiet but persistent desire: to train seriously in martial arts and to gain real command of the Japanese language.

I chose Okinawa because it was the birthplace of so many fighting traditions, and because Isshinkan Dojo offered a structured path in Goshinkai Ju-Jutsu under the guidance of Rika Nakaema, with Alain Gaingowa as the Soke of the school. The Instructor Training Course especially appealed to me. It was not simply another place to practice; it was a clear program designed to develop instructors and deepen technical understanding.

The decision was practical as well as personal. I arranged to live separately from the dojo, as most foreign students did, and to commute for training. I would keep close contact with my family throughout the stay. The plan was for approximately eighteen months.

When the plane left Indonesia, the purpose was clear. I was going to train, to study the language, and to test how far disciplined daily practice could take me.
