What happens when a fresh murder begins turning into Bellucci history before the truth is even known? While Vinny Bellucci works through the sprawling twelve-room attic above Bellucci Mansion, Valeri Caronna is stationed at Skull Beach, keeping an eye on the moonshine operation for him. Then a body is found near Skull Creek. A bottle, a mark, a recipe, or a number appears to connect the death to 1738—but every account arrives incomplete, and the details begin changing almost immediately. Vinny recognizes the pattern without pursuing the killer. The murder reaches Saint Charles through rumor, partial records, and guarded conversation. By the time Aunt Beatrice and Jeeves begin telling the story, one remembers a bottle beside the body. The other insists there was no bottle. One remembers a recipe in the dead man’s pocket. The other says his pockets were empty. Vinny does not correct them. Inside Bellucci Mansion, history is not preserved cleanly.
