CHAPTER 1: THE SHADOW AUDIT
The midnight rain slicked the asphalt of the deserted highway like black ice, reflecting the sharp flashes of muzzle fire.
Two sleek, dark Mercedes sedans roared down the stretch at lethal speeds, their engines screaming in unison as they hunted down a silver coupe fleeing ahead. From the open passenger window of the trailing sedan, a gunman leaned out, his silhouetted form steady against the fierce wind.
*BANG! BANG!*
Subtle, precise shots tore through the night air. The silver coupe’s rear tire exploded into shredded rubber, sparks flying violently as the rim scraped the pavement. The coupe spun wildly out of control, tires screeching in a desperate attempt to regain balance.
Before the driver could slam the car into reverse, the blinding high-beams of a massive black armored SUV illuminated the darkness. It tore through the intersection, executing a sharp, cinematic drift to block the road ahead with absolute authority.
The two trailing sedans pulled up from behind, completely boxing the silver coupe into a steel trap.
The driver’s side door of the armored SUV swung open.
A tall, heavily built man stepped out into the pouring rain. Raindrops clung to his dark charcoal suit and slicked back his hair, but he didn't even flinch.
Anshuman Rathore, 29 year old, possessed an aura that chilled the air around him. With a sharp jaw, ruthless dark grey eyes, and a presence so suffocating that no one in the business world ever dared to look him directly in the eye, he ruled without hesitation. To the public, Rathore Enterprises was one of the top conglomerates in the nation. To those who crossed him, Anshuman was an unstoppable storm.
He had no mercy. To him, love was just a foolish weakness, and business was the only religion that mattered.
Without uttering a word, Anshuman raised a heavy matte-black pistol.
*CRASH! BANG!*
He blew out the driver-side mirror and window of the trapped car just as the terrified driver tried to force the gear shift. Glass shattered in every direction.
Anshuman strode toward the ruined vehicle, his polished leather shoes crunching over the glass. He reached through the shattered window, hauled the trembling driver out by his collar with one hand, and slammed him hard against the hot hood of the car.
"Did you really think running away from me would be that easy?" Anshuman asked, his voice low, cold, and stripped of all humanity.
"P-Please, sir! I was just—"
"Who are you working for?" Anshuman roared, the command cutting straight through the heavy thunder.
"Singhania Corporates!" the man gasped, weeping hysterically as his knees gave out beneath him. "It was Singhania! They... they offered me millions to steal your internal audit files and leak the offshore accounts!"
Anshuman didn't waste another second on words. A dark growl escaped his chest. He lowered his weapon and fired a single, brutal round straight into the man's right leg.
An agonizing scream echoed across the empty highway.
"Get him out of my sight," Anshuman ordered coldly, stepping back and wiping a stray drop of rain from his cheek.
Rudhra—his closest friend, trusted secretary, and the only man brave enough to stand beside Anshuman without trembling—stepped forward, immediately holding a black umbrella over Anshuman's head.
"What are your orders, Anshuman?" Rudhra asked, his voice calm and professional.
Anshuman stared down the dark, empty highway, his natural suspicion flaring up as he processed the betrayal.
"Singhania thinks he can use a weak link in accounting to bring down my empire," Anshuman said softly, his tone far more dangerous than his roar. "Tomorrow morning, I want every single internal file checked. Call in an external auditing team. Screen everyone."
"Consider it done," Rudhra replied, opening the rear door of the armored car.
Anshuman slid into the leather seat, staring out into the dark night as the convoy sped away. He trusted no one, suspected everyone, and tomorrow... he was going to tear his finance department apart until he found every single traitor. On the other side of the city, far from the dark shadows of the highway, the mood was entirely different.
In a modest, cozy living room, Maya sat on the edge of the sofa, looking up at her mother with wide, hopeful eyes. Maya was a twenty-two-year-old bundle of energy—bubbly, hardworking, and striking in her simplicity. Having recently completed her finance degree, she had just received the news that would change her life: she had cleared the interview at the prestigious Rathore Enterprises.
"Maa, listen to me..." Maya pleaded softly, reaching out to take her mother’s hands. "It’s good for me. It’s a huge opportunity."
Her mother, Meera, shook her head vehemently, pulling her hands back, her expression clouded with anxiety. "No, Maya. I don't want you working there. You are still so young!"
"Mom, if I have the degree and it got me the job, what’s wrong with taking it?" Maya reasoned, leaning forward.
"That company is far too high-profile, too cutthroat," Meera said, her voice rising with worry. "And the rumors, Maya... there are so many disturbing news reports about how strict and dangerous that place can be. No, I won't let you."
"Maa! Rohan and Riya got hired at the same firm too," Maya argued, trying to reassure her. "They are joining as well, so why shouldn't I? It's a proper corporate auditing role!"
Meera’s eyes filled with tears, her voice cracking as a surge of emotion broke through. "Because I only have you!" she cried out. "You want to leave me too? Your father divorced us when you were fourteen... and now you're just going to pack up and go into the city?"
The room fell dead silent.
Maya felt a sharp pang in her chest. She stood up, looking down at her mother with a mixture of pain and determination. "Maa... I am going for our own good. To give us a better future."
Without waiting for another response, Maya turned and quietly walked back to her bedroom, closing the door behind her.
By the evening, the heavy silence in the house began to soften.
Meera stood near the doorway of Maya’s room, watching her daughter carefully pack her clothes into a small suitcase. The anger had melted away, replaced only by a mother's quiet fear and unconditional love.
Meera stepped inside, taking a slow breath. "Okay..." she whispered.
Maya paused, turning around.
"Do as you want," Meera said, offering a faint, emotional smile. "Just... be safe, alright? And all the best."
A radiant, bright smile instantly broke across Maya's face. She ran forward and threw her arms around her mother, hugging her tightly. "Thank you, Maa! I promise I'll make you proud."
She had no idea that tomorrow morning, stepping into the top floor of Rathore Enterprises would put her directly in the crosshairs of Anshuman Rathore.
