1 - Romance the prince

* * *

Another day progressed on “Earth”. The more I patrol this familiar but new place, the more I feel like going insane. Some of the angels said I was still new despite being in my 200s already. I guess it’s due to the fact that time progresses differently in the afterlife.

I used to be a human once, at least, up until I died due to the failing of a heart surgery I was meant to go through. Even though they had high chances of being successful, I was one of the unlucky ones and happened to die because of it.

To be honest, I didn’t believe in such things as heaven nor hell. If I couldn’t prove it exists, it felt odd for me to believe in them- which was surprising for some angels here.

The moment I had opened my eyes in so called “heaven”, I was given brief information; for instance, I got in with a 73/100 ratio- which seemed very odd for the afterlife to be using a ratio to see if people got into heaven or hell, though I didn’t want to question it.

Another thing I had learned about the afterlife was that there was an exact replica of earth that acts as a border for the two regions. Everything was the same except for the fact that any living creature were nonexistent there.

Anyways.. enough of the boring talk.

What’s important is that almost every single day during my patrols; I see him.

Aell. The crown prince of hell, in other words; a demon who’s royalty.

Which shouldn’t be a problem for me, right? I’d never see him and even if I do, I wouldn’t exactly interact with him.

Except, that wasn’t really the case.

Long story short, he occasionally- by occasionally, I mean frequently went to “Earth”, specifically the area I patrol. He wasn’t exactly the kind of individual you’d expect to be royalty; immediately, he pissed me off, and ever since that day until the day I had died- our relationship was basically in the negatives.

His mocking personality and the fake softness of his voice ticked me off a lot.

Ironically, war took place about 100 years later.

I stood on the battleground that was once a peaceful land- turned into red anguish. As you could never force peace for too long on beings that were once humans.

As his fire burned through the battlefield, I could only take so much until I had succumbed to the heat of it.

My wings burned away, and my halo had melted. The only thing my blurring vision could focus on was the expression of horror on Aell’s face as he saw me go down. I wonder why? His enemy had just died in battle- he should have triumph on his face, not horror..

After that last thought, all went black and I could see nothing left.

That should be the end of it right? Just an angel’s story about dying due to a heart surgery failure while he’s a human- and then dying again as an angel by his worst enemy who happened to be one of- if not- the most powerful spiritual entities in the generation. Quite pathetic but also a bit sad.

Well... a stroke of luck brought me back to the past. Exactly 100 years before the war started.

And.. I wasn’t exactly happy about it.

Why was I granted a second chance at life? Why grant me this when I’m already at the afterlife? Why didn’t they just let me die in peace and move my soul to the unknown?

None of my questions were answered.

Other than that, I had the want of revenge-

I wanted to have revenge on Aell. For everything he’d done to me.

But.. I had a problem. Multiple problems actually. Aell was too powerful, in a way that even made the current demon king’s powers look worse. A single angel with no authority like me could never properly kill him.

So.. if I can’t kill him ; can I romance the prince into loving me?

Maybe. It sounds very dumb and probably wouldn’t work; but, if it could at least guarantee my chances of surviving in the future war and possibly kill him then.. It doesn’t sound as bad. Especially since I have nothing to lose anyway.

If the him in my past life had somehow caught wind of this, he’d laugh so hard he’d probably break one of his wings from how hard he would laugh.

Whatever..

* * *

It’s been a few days now. I haven’t seen Aell in a long while now. Had he stopped his antics the moment I got revived or something?

Either way, it was definitely more peaceful without him. Too peaceful.

"Hey. Miss me?”

Speak of the devil..

“No, I didn’t.” I replied to him, but for some reason- my tone barely had any bite in it. In which, he noticed.

Despite noticing, Aell didn’t really push about it, a bit weird.

“Sure, angel. What are you doing now?” He talked with the same tone as I had remembered; soft with intent.

I scratched the back of my hand out of habit. “Work, what else? Not like I have as much free time as you, Aell.”

He snickered, “You really think I have a lot of free time or some sort?”

“Yes? Why else would you take the time out of your schedule to annoy me on a daily basis?” I replied as I looked at the prince who was walking beside me now on a street.

Oddly enough, I had noticed that he was a lot shorter than I thought. Not too short, but maybe around 5′5. Which seemed funny to think about; since he had technically almost got blacklisted from “Earth” itself.

Anyway.. he seemed hesitant about his response after what I had said. I wonder why.

Aell opened his mouth for a second before closing it again, most likely rethinking his answer, until he uttered out; “I find it worth my time to annoy you daily, angel.”

I stopped in my tracks for a moment.

What?

“I.. pardon?” I muttered out, flabbergasted at his answer.

Did I hear that right? Aell- the crown prince of hell, one of the most powerful beings recorded in hell’s history.. takes the time out of his precious day to annoy an angel?

Not to mention, it’s a lower ranking patrol angel, no less.

Aell stood there in silence as he also stopped in his tracks.

“... Don’t take that the wrong way.” His green eyes glared into mine.

I looked away, trying to hold back a smile that I didn’t put into the script. “Sure, whatever makes you sleep at night.” I said sarcastically.

I could tell Aell wasn’t very pleased with the sarcastic comment I gave, but he didn’t defend himself further. I glanced back a little just to see his expression- he seemed.. flustered. As if he was embarrassed about it.

He looks dumb. I thought to myself.

* * *

It’s so stupid. Stupid. Stupid.

Why is this foolish angel suddenly acting different? If I had told anyone about this thought, none of them would believe me; because to them, he sounds and acts the same.

But I know he has something up his sleeve. He always calculates his physical and verbal moves. There is no way in hell that this dumb- silly- pretty man- is trying to act all nice and friendly with me. His tone for the entire conversation had absolutely no bite in it, nor is he trying to insult me 24/7 like usual.

I looked away when I realized he was glancing at me- most likely to take a look at my expression or some sort..

“Stop looking at me like that.” I uttered.

“Like what, Aell?” He teasingly leaned down to my eyes level. Our height difference wasn’t much, at most- 2.5 inches, but it was still rather visible that there was a difference.

God- this man.

“Whatever..”

It’s not even funny. Something is wrong with him but I can’t prove it. The lack of knowledge of mine for this one situation including a foolish angel is irritating me more than I care to admit.

Why do I even take the time out of my busy schedule to go down this place just to annoy this fool? For entertainment?

Actually yeah, that’s the reasoning for it. I may had unintentionally answered my own question.

His reactions are always so.. lively. Even if he looks at me aggravated every time. No one dares to look at me that way; it’s still an interesting sight to behold ever since the first time I saw it.

Mistakenly, I had been staring at the man for too long. So much so that he seems..-

“What are you thinking about to be staring at me this deeply?” I snapped out of my trance when he asked me.

I hesitated for a second, what was I supposed to say to that?

That I was thinking about how his reactions entertain me terribly to the point I genuinely take the time out of my day to see him daily?

“Nothing.” I answered.

He looked at me with a gaze that clearly said he knew I was lying and was looking for the actual answer.

The angel looked away before mumbling out something under his breath; “It sure doesn’t seem like nothing.”

“What?” I questioned, I heard what he said, I just needed confirmation- if he’d give me it.

“Don’t worry about it. It’s trivial.” He replied, looking back at me again.

I’m not gonna lie, I was expecting a snarky comment or insult there.

Did he hit his head or something..?

* * *

I think I’m too suspicious.

Especially since I’m bad at lying.

For some reason, Aell isn’t saying anything. That might be worse than him interrogating me.

Why is Aell acting a little different than usual? Did my actions do this?

“Do you.. want to go to the nearby cafe here with me?” I asked him.

Great. Just great. I made something awkward even more awkward, and on top of that- my pride and ego is getting crushed by the second.

I wouldn’t even be surprised if he rejects the invit-

“Sure.”

Sorry,what?

I looked at him, dumbfounded. “What?”

He looked back at me, he seemed a little hassled by it.

“You heard me, angel. Or is your ego so frail you thought I wouldn’t accept at all?”

Okay. Never mind the thought about him acting different. This is normal. I guess.

“It’s not that.. I just-”

Before I could come up with an excuse to save myself the embarrassment, he already cut me off; “I don’t care what your reasoning is. Let’s just go, shall we?”

... Huh. Never knew the demon prince was this careless. So despicable.
