Chapter 1hhe dsclr09
The sun used to rise with a warm, golden radiance over the small valley where Arthur lived. Life was simple, quiet, and deeply peaceful. What made it whole were his three closest companions: Jesie, with her quick wit and infectious laughter; Tomas, the steadfast builder who could solve any practical problem; and Amy, whose quiet empathy kept them all grounded. They did everything together—sharing harvests, sitting around evening fires, and leaning on one another whenever trouble arose. To Arthur, their friendship was the very definition of light.
That light was extinguished in a single, terrifying night.
A shadowy figure wearing a stark, sterile face mask infiltrated their village, capturing Jesie, Tomas, and Amy while Arthur was away. Returning to an eerie silence, Arthur searched frantically until he discovered trail marks leading into the jagged, dead mountains at the edge of the valley. He ran until his lungs burned, following the path straight into an abandoned underground facility.
Deep within the cold, metallic complex, Arthur peered through a reinforced glass panel and caught his breath. His three friends were trapped inside a sealed chamber, suspended beneath a massive machine that glowed with strange, iridescent hues. To Arthur, it looked like a device meant to alter their memories or siphon their energy. Desperate to stop it, he began looking for a way to break through the glass.
He had no way of knowing the horrific truth. The swirling colors inside the vat were not light or magic, but a hyper-corrosive synthetic acid—a chemical so volatile that a single microscopic droplet could instantly destroy organic life. As Arthur searched for a control panel, the liquid released. In an instant, without a sound, his friends were gone.
Still believing they were trapped and needing rescue, Arthur panicked. Blinded by desperation, he bolted down a dark corridor searching for the masked scientist. He didn't see the broken floorboards ahead. Step after step was a gamble, and on his fifth stride, the floor gave way completely.
Arthur plummeted fourteen meters into a dark, forgotten maintenance pit.
The impact knocked the air from his lungs. Gasping in the damp dark, he scrambled to his feet and threw himself against the pit walls. But the concrete was slick with stagnant moisture and algae. Every time he managed to climb a few feet, his grip slipped, sending him crashing back to the hard floor. He tried again and again until his fingernails bled and his muscles trembled with complete exhaustion.
As the hours bled together in the total darkness, the air grew thick and heavy. Suffocation set in alongside the agonizing realization that no one was coming. Trapped in the depths, the weight of total failure crashed over him. His mind fractured under the burden of overwhelming sorrow, stress, and grief.
In that pitch-black pit, Arthur collapsed. As his last drop of hope, joy, and happiness vanished, a quiet transformation took hold. The pigment drained from his hair, his skin turned a dull pale grey, his eyes darkened into empty voids, and his clothes lost every shred of color.
When Arthur finally stood up, he was no longer the man he had been. His profound loss had manifested as a terrifying anomaly: he had become a living void. Anything he touched was instantly stripped of its color. And because color was the fundamental energy of life in his world, removing a creature's or plant's vibrant hue took its life away as well, leaving behind only brittle, grey dust.
Escaping the pit with his new, unnatural form, the grey entity stepped out into a world brimming with life. But Arthur’s broken mind retained only one single, tragic motivation. He believed the world's bright colors were a veil, hiding the reality he had lost.
Now, he wanders from land to land, draining the life and color from everything in his path, endlessly searching for Jesie, Tomas, and Amy—convinced that if he can just take away enough color, he will finally find his friends standing on the other side.
