Chapter 1 ~ Stratum Protocols

⚠️ A QUICK NOTE ON THE OMEGAVERSE IN THIS STORY:

Welcome, dear readers! Before you dive into the darkness of this world, please note that this is NOT a werewolf / shapeshifter romance nor is it a fairy tale.

This is a dystopian Omegaverse novel.

In this world, Alpha, Beta, and Omega are biological social classes created to maintain a rigid hierarchy.

Society is governed by the Stratum Order, where every citizen is assigned a predetermined role, and individuality is considered a threat.

This story explores power, autonomy, free will, and what happens when two people refuse to fit the roles society has chosen for them.

A grumpy military giant slowly being emotionally destroyed by one tiny woman... and an equally tiny stray cat.

Chapter 1 ~ Stratum Protocols

Drake Thorne

I lift my military tunic from the armchair in my bedroom and step in front of the full-length mirror. I put it on, observing my reflection—impeccably styled blonde hair, a freshly shaved jaw. I fasten button after button to the rhythm of the heavy rain hammering against the windowpane. Running my palms down the front of the jacket, I smooth out the dark fabric. A quiet wave of satisfaction settles in as I scan the perfect order around me.

Everything is in its exact place. My bedroom is minimalist, borderline Spartan, matching the rest of the house—precisely how I like it.

Today is a special day. After thirty-four years of service to the Stratum Order, my retirement reward has finally arrived: a private estate, a garden, a greenhouse converted into a gym and pool area, and—as mandated by the Breeding Program for all registered Alphas—a submissive, docile Omega who will be delivered to my doorstep within minutes.

The Stratum Order, the supreme governing body of our society, established this specialized program to ensure Alphas propagate their elite bloodline.

I take pride in knowing I will now have my own Omega. A quiet little thing to cook, clean, manage the household, and occupy my bed every night. In active service, an Omega was assigned to me only once a month for a single night, just to get me through my heat. Now, she will be permanently at my disposal. At thirty-nine, retired from the front lines, I will no longer drop into warzones, my only duties will be attending high-ranking galas. The Stratum Order rewards loyalty, and the thought brings a dark surge of pride.

A sharp, disciplined knock at the front door cuts through my thoughts. She’s here.

I smooth my tunic one last time—a deliberate choice to project authority and remind my new bride of the honor bestowed upon her. Without rushing, I stride to the entrance and swing the door open.

When I look down, confusion immediately spikes through me.

The storm outside makes the night pitch-black. Reaching out, I wrap my hand around the Omega’s slender wrist, pulling her inside, and kick the door shut behind us.

Under the warm foyer lights, I take her in. A sudden wave of disorientation hits me.

Standing before me is an agonizingly small, fragile creature. She has long, midnight-black hair, wide brown eyes, stained reddish lips, and pale skin. She’s wearing a thin, soaking-wet hospital gown, dripping onto my floorboards. I prefer small Omegas—they are easy to maneuver and dominate in bed—but what the hell is this? She barely reaches my chest, so thin and delicate I doubt she’ll survive a single night under my weight.

“What is your name?” I ask, turning my face away slightly.

A deafening silence fills the room. I snap my gaze back to her. She hasn’t moved an inch. She just stands there, staring at me with those vacant, oversized eyes.

“I asked for your name. Omega, answer me!” I command, dropping my voice into the lethal tone I use on insubordinate soldiers.

Zero response. Panic and irritation claw at my chest. This has never happened to me before.

I take her hand, lift it in the air, and let go. It drops back to her side like lead, completely lifeless. The only sign of vitality is a subtle tremor running through her skin—likely from the freezing rain.

“Get naked. You need dry clothes,” I growl, unbuttoning my tunic with rising annoyance. I drape the heavy jacket carefully over the back of a chair to avoid wrinkling it. But when I turn back, she hasn’t shifted a millimeter. She just stares into the void.

I step into her personal space, bending down until we are eye-to-eye. “Are you stubborn? You have two choices: you strip yourself, or I strip you.”

Nothing. Not a flicker of fear, defiance, or submission. What the hell is wrong with her?

Omegas are engineered to do everything in their power to appease an Alpha. But she doesn’t speak. She doesn’t move. She doesn’t react. Is she broken?

My patience snaps. Scooping her up into my arms, I march into the bathroom. She weighs virtually nothing—like holding air. I set her down on the tile floor.

“Raise your arms.”

Still nothing. Fuming, I grab the hem of her wet hospital gown and rip it over her head in one harsh, swift motion.

My throat goes instantly dry.

She stands completely naked before me, and her body is breathtaking. Soft, rounded breasts perfectly sized to fill my palms; a narrow, carved waist; and shockingly long, elegant legs that accentuate the flare of her hips.

Forcing my mind back to protocol, I grab a dry towel and begin rubbing her down, lingering over the curves that make someone so fragile dangerously alluring.

“Are you mute? Are you deaf? What is wrong with you?” I demand, lifting her back into my arms and carrying her toward the master bedroom.

Expecting no answer, I lay her on the mattress and head to the closet, selecting a plain white t-shirt from the color-coded sleepwear section. I slide the fabric over her head, threading her limp arms through the sleeves one by one. Sitting beside her, I gently drag her across the sheets until she rests against my lap.

My gaze slides down her bare thighs. Seeing her swallowed up in my t-shirt triggers a volatile cocktail of emotions—a chaotic impulse balance between throwing her out the window and pinning her to the bed to consume every inch of her skin.

My fingers trace the soft line of her thigh. Involuntarily, I lean into the crook of her neck, inhaling deep. Rain water mixed with a harsh, synthetic chemical scent hits my senses. Driven by pure instinct, I press my lips against her collarbone.

Her pulse beats slow and steady beneath my mouth. Her total lack of response infuriates me, even though her scent is so intensely alive.

I grip her forearm, realizing with a sudden jolt how terrifyingly easy it would be to snap her bones with a single hand. As if testing the theory, I tighten my grip until a solitary tear wells in the corner of her eye.

She doesn’t speak. She doesn’t flinch. But she feels.

I lay her back down on the pillows to initiate the process when the bedside phone violently rings.

*Damn it.*

Snatching the receiver, I bark into the line.

“Sir, we apologize, but there has been a logistical error regarding the Omega dispatched to your residence,” a male voice rattles off quickly. “We are en route to retrieve her—unless you prefer to keep her or have already initiated the breeding protocol.”

A wave of feral possessiveness instantly crashes over me.

“What kind of mistake?” I snarl into the receiver. “She was delivered to my house. I have full intention of initiating the protocol.”

I look back at her quiet, still form on the bed. All I want is to pull her flush against my chest and lock her away from the world.

“She is... quite small, sir. Likely not a proper match for your profile,” the agent continues nervously. “Her cleaning process was incomplete. She might be broken. We are arriving to extract her and deliver your assigned Omega.”

The more he talks, the more my control unravels.

“Broken? Not a match?” I look at her again. Yes, she is fragile. Yes, a heavy breath could bruise her. But—

“She is not broken,” I roar into the phone. “She is *mine*.”

“But Sir—”

“No ‘buts’,” I growl, my voice dropping an octave into pure menace. “She stays here. And if any of your men step foot on my property trying to take what’s mine? You won’t like what happens next.”

“Sir, we can grant a seven-day trial period,” the officer stammers, trying to de-escalate. “If you still wish to keep her after seven days, we will finalize the union. If she becomes pregnant and you decide against keeping her, the military will claim the child and issue your proper Omega assignment.”

My jaw clenches at the term ‘trial period’, but the thought of getting her pregnant—of keeping her permanently—anchors my resolve.

“Fine. Seven days,” I bite out.

“Understood, Sir. In seven days, a medical unit will arrive for blood tests. See you then.” The line goes dead before I can respond.

Breathing heavily, I step toward the bed. I unbuckle my tactical belt, ready to strip down and join her, when the phone blares a second time.

I glare at the device, then down at her. “You better not disappoint me. I’m not letting them take you.”

Muttering a curse, I yank the receiver up. It’s the same agent.

“Sir, I am deeply sorry, but this error is catastrophic. The extraction unit is outside your door right now. We must retrieve her immediately.”

Blood rushes to my ears. My grip threatens to crush the plastic phone. A low, inhuman sound erupts from my chest.

“No.” The word escapes more like a predator’s snarl than human speech. “You don’t get to take her. I don’t care if she was sent by mistake. She stays.”

“Sir, she cannot stay! She isn’t even in the Breeding Program! Protocol strictly forbids—”

“I don’t give a damn about your stupid protocols! You are not touching her! * She has already been assigned to me!*” I roar.

“Sir, she is slated for the Serving Program! We are entering—”

“Don’t you dare!” I threaten, blind fury obliterating my military discipline. “I swear I will rip your throat out if you try to take her from me! I will tear it out with my goddamn teeth!”

At that exact second, my front door is blown off its hinges.

Twenty heavily armed soldiers flood into the hallway. Before I can reach the bed, a shock-baton strikes her shoulder. She is yanked from the mattress and dragged toward the shattered doorway.

I have never felt a rage so pure, so apocalyptic.

Bare-handed, I hurl myself at the assault team. I slam three soldiers into the drywall, breaking another’s neck, but before I can clear the threshold, a high-voltage shock-taser strikes me directly in the side of the neck.

My muscles lock. My vision blackens. And as my body hits the floorboards, paralyzed, I watch them carry her away into the storm.
