Chapter 1 when paths cross
Crossroads of Destiny
Chapter 1: When Paths Cross
"Some people enter your life by chance. Others return because fate never truly let them go."
The departure hall pulsed with the restless rhythm of rolling suitcases, distant announcements, and hurried footsteps. Beneath the brilliant ceiling lights, strangers brushed past one another, each carrying a destination of their own.
Amid the endless stream of travelers, Aria balanced her phone between her shoulder and ear, effortlessly weaving through the crowd in her cream oversized knit sweater and high-waist blue jeans. Her white sneakers carried her effortlessly through the crowd and her hair was pulled into a messy low bun with a claw clip. Her warm hazel eyes sparkled with excitement as she searched the crowd for her best friend.
"Hey, girl... where are you?" she laughed, unable to hide her excitement. "Don't tell me you're making me wait after all these years."
A sudden impact interrupted her sentence. She stumbled backward, nearly losing her balance before steady hands caught her.
"I'm terribly sorry," she said with an embarrassed smile.
"It's alright."
The reply came from a tall young man in a navy button-down shirt with the sleeves rolled to his forearms and black chinos. His neatly styled brown hair and warm amber eyes complemented his calm, approachable demeanor. "I'm Adrian."
Beside him stood another man, silent and observant, his unreadable gaze drifting across the terminal. Dressed in a dark olive jacket over a black hoodie, dark jeans, and black Chelsea boots, Cassian stood with his hands buried in his pockets. His dark hair framed striking steel-gray eyes that revealed little of what he was thinking.
Aria's cheerful nature dissolved the awkwardness almost instantly.
"So... what brings you two here?"
Adrian smiled. "I'm here to pick up my sister and her friend."
Aria nodded before looking toward the quieter man.
After a brief silence, he exhaled softly. "I'm waiting for someone."
"Someone special?" Aria teased.
A faint smile appeared on his lips. "...You could say that."
Before anyone could continue, the echo of approaching footsteps rippled through the hall.
Aria's eyes lit up. "She's here!" Without another word, she hurried toward the approaching figure.
And there she was.
Aurelia in a long beige trench coat over a black silk slip dress and ankle boots. Her long dark brown hair fell in soft waves over her shoulders, and as she pushed her sunglasses onto her head, a warm smile spread across her face, revealing soft dimples that brightened her smile.
"Aurelia!" Aria called, wrapping her in a tight hug.
Adrian turned instinctively. Cassian looked up.
The moment their eyes found the woman emerging from the crowd... Everything stopped.
The noise. The movement. Even time itself seemed to hesitate.
Adrian's expression hardened with disbelief. Cassian remained frozen, as though a ghost from another lifetime had suddenly appeared before him.
The woman greeted Aria with a heartfelt embrace before turning politely toward Adrian, extending her hand with effortless grace.
Then... Her eyes met Cassian's. Neither of them spoke. Neither of them smiled. For one endless heartbeat, silence carried more weight than words. She offered only the faintest nod before looking away.
Who was she? Why had her arrival stolen every expression from their faces? And why did it feel as though this meeting had been destined long before any of them stepped into the airport?
Adrian led them toward the airport parking area. The evening breeze carried the distant hum of traffic, while rows of parked cars shimmered beneath the golden glow of streetlights.
Travelers continued streaming out of the terminal, their conversations blending with the sound of rolling suitcases and departing taxis.
Unlocking the car, Adrian turned to Aurelia with a warm smile. "Do you want to try the new restaurant everyone's talking about?"
Aurelia's eyes brightened instantly. "Of course, bro! What do you say, Aria... Cassian?"
Aria's excitement was impossible to hide. She raised her hand, and Aurelia laughed as they exchanged a cheerful high-five. "That's definitely my choice!" Aria said with a grin.
Everyone's attention shifted to Cassian. For a brief moment, he remained silent before giving a small nod. "I'm fine with that."
A nervous smile flickered across Aurelia's lips. Without another word, Adrian started the car.
The city lights stretched endlessly beyond the windshield as they drove through the lively evening streets.
After several minutes, he pulled into the restaurant's parking lot, switched off the engine, and stepped out. He gestured toward the brightly lit entrance. "Come on."
Together, the four of them walked toward the restaurant, while the warm aroma of freshly prepared food drifted through the cool night air, welcoming them inside.
The bright sign above the entrance read: Yummy Restaurant. Warm golden lights spilled through the glass windows, and the delicious aroma of grilled dishes, fresh bread, and sweet desserts drifted into the cool evening air.
Laughter and cheerful conversations echoed from inside, making the restaurant feel lively and welcoming.
Aurelia slipped her arm around Adrian's, looking up at him with sparkling curiosity. "Brother..." she asked innocently, "is the food at Yummy Restaurant really as yummy as its name?"
Adrian nodded with a quiet smile. "It is."
Aurelia slowly turned her face toward him in exaggerated disbelief. "What?"
A brief pause. Then, a mischievous, childlike grin spread across her face. She blinked dramatically twice, as though a brilliant idea had just appeared in her mind.
Before anyone could figure out what she was about to do... She suddenly grabbed Adrian by the arm, caught Aria's hand with her other hand, and rushed toward the restaurant entrance.
Cassian followed them silently. His footsteps were steady, but his eyes never left Aurelia for long.
She laughed freely with Aria, as though nothing unusual had happened.
Yet the brief moment their gazes had met at the airport refused to leave his mind.
It felt less like the beginning of a reunion... and more like the reopening of a story neither of them had ever truly finished.
